A quick eBay search turned up some HDMI-VGA cables at $2.50 shipped. I doubt you'll find anything better.

I already announced this yesterday but somehow my posting got lost - seems that NBR forums had a database rollback yesterday.

Anyway, here is the message again: I created some fancy "NBR Team Envy" banners for your forum signatures. They are available for each Envy model:

I redid the banner now with the new text and for all four Envys:

Link to the original announcement: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/511659-team-envy-signature-banner-2.html#post6624849

If you like em, I would be happy to recieve some reps. ;)

I love the color from my Envy that sets it apart from most other laptops nowadays and prevents to make it look like a total MBP ripoff.

I am always astonished how it changes color in different lightings: dark bronze in dark environments and a nearly greenish shimmer in light environments (which looks best, somewhat noble IMHO).

Quick question: witch drivers should I install to get my mic jack working?
Everything else works, expect the mic jack.

Now this worked before (with the hdd & hp installation), I just did a clean install on my new ssd, and this is the only thing I cannot get working

When it was included, base price was $1100, then as an option base price was $1000, so really it increased $100 then $200.

Below is just some vebal diarrhea, thanks for listening.

Am I crazy for wanting to return my Envy? I love the build quality and construction of the machine, but was hoping a little more from the CPU & GPU gaming-wise, not to mention some niggling little issues all around. I knew the performance would be less, but it seems more significant than I thought.

After BCB and selling my Sager the machine will cost me about $500 out of pocket. Instead I could put that towards a 256GB Crucial C300 SSD in my Sager, which also has a significantly more powerful CPU & GPU.

Battery life will be less of course, but I'm wondering now if that's such an issue for me. And weight and size are about 2 lbs more than the Envy, but not as significant in reality, as it looks on paper. The lit keyboard and screen on the Envy are very nice, but not really a necessity. I love the chiclet style though, and will probably get that in my next machine.

I think I knee jerked when I bought the Envy, because of the Bing Cashback. I was strongly considering it at the time, plus I just had a spill on my Sager keyboard and trackpad, which made my machine inoperable. But I have since fixed that and its running better than ever. If I had the money I'd keep them both.

I like the community here though, but unless someone wants to give me $500 (or more if you're feeling kind :) ) I don't think it'd be enough to sway me.

@htwingnut, Hey man it's up to you. I like the machine, but do most of my gaming on my desktop. This thing is great for sitting on the couch w/ integrated and just surfing though. The coolness of the machine makes it great. My old Toshiba was just always burning my lap when I was sitting on the couch surfing, not to mention it makes a nice bed computer too. But $500 is $500. I paid alot more for it however and am not considering sending it back. Short of HP's shortcomings (recovery DVDs not working after BIOS update) I like the machine. I wanted a powerful machine that was portable stylish and ran cool. I got it, but if you don't like it, get rid of it, YOUR the one that's gotta be happy...

    A Netbook actually runs hotter!

This is a bit off topic, but is anyone else scratching their head over Intel buying out McAfee? I mean McAfee's antivirus software isn't that good is it? Also it was a pretty hefty price tag for a subpar antivirus company was it not?

Virus-Busting Chips! Why Intel Paid Billions for McAfee.

McAfee's antivirus software is... well... bloated though, is it not?

Edit: A little research has confirmed McAfee to be subpar antivirus software. I Still don't know what Intel was thinking...

You know, you might even want to sell your Envy rather than returning it; you got 30% cash-back, so you'd be able to make a small profit, and anyone buying it would get a nicely configured Envy for way less than they'd buy it for now from HP. I might even be interested, if the price is right. (I understand if you don't trust me for that though, being a 2-post noob...but I wanted to make sure I threw that out there, since I'm in need of a decently-priced Envy and all. :p)

My HP Envy 14 is shipping... I've been reading a lot of the threads here so I figured I would register. Kinda nervous about build quality because of the complaints I've seen here, but decided to go ahead with the purchase anyways.

I had an issue with the HP Mini 1000 I bought last year because the screen wasn't set in right so there was a cosmetic flaw. Didn't have any trouble when I sent it back though; overall I've been happy with HP's support.

Haven't had a decent computer in about a year though so I'd prefer NOT sending in the Envy to get fixed right away haha. My other HP laptop (bought it 2008) had its LCD go out about two months after the warranty expired. Wasn't happy with that :( For some reason I'm a pretty big HP fan though so I don't usually consider buying from other companies.

That would take time and $, might as well have invested in an antivirus co. that already has it's act together, esp. for Billions of $. AV on a chip sounds like a can of worms to me... at least unless you can disable it in BIOS. Software you can always uninstall or tell it to ignore whatever legitimate file it thinks is a virus.

HP so far seems to offer a good product at a good value. Hopefully with the build issues they had early on they got their act together and aren't shipping defective units, but I guess there is always a bad one in the bunch or so they say...

I put everything on max volume but it's not satisfactory to my ears.
I did a clean install. And someone says that I have to download something that'll activate Beats Audio.

Am I missing anything? PLEASE HELP

you need HPToneControl to make fn+b work again. Also I'd go and check JJB's guide.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/5668647-post3614.html

just a head's up, that guide caused weird noises for my headphones through my speakers (I'm guessing the logitech speakers do their own things to make stuff sound better or something)

also if you don't have a bass and treble tab in there well...you definitely need to find and install HPToneControl (should be in your sw setup folder)

I'm having problems with the screen dimming and then not going to normal brightness again... this happens when, for example, a program tries to change your computer or something and there's a popup that appears, along with dimming your screen. After clicking yes or no, the screen remains dimmed for some reason and I have to restart / sleep the computer to get it back to normal (and if the computer is plugged to an external monitor, only restart works). What is wrong with this thing?

And I've turned off the dim option for programs; however, the dim also occurs when changing graphics processors...

only fix for that I've seen is rebooting.

I've only seen it a few days ago since I updated my graphics drivers to the 8/13 one on the HP site. If there's no solution to this I guess I'll have to switch back then.

It's probably an issue of getting the screens in stock - they ran out about a week ago, so they're probably struggling to stock them for now. I'd think (or hope) that once they get an adequate number in stock, they'll drop the price back down.

In retrospect, I have to say I really like the Envy 14 overall. I have a few nagging issues, but hopefully something can be done about them eventually...

    If it wasn't for
    A) CPU whine
    B) Fan cycling
    C) Hissing sound with earphones
    D) Odd trackpad cracking noise on right-clicking (which, oddly, only appeared after about two weeks of use)

Then I'd give it about 9/10. A better GPU (at least not the lowest 5650M on the market) would've given it 9.5. I'm hopeful that A and B can be fixed through BIOS updates (the whine might be fixed through a change in the power settings), I'll be getting an attenuator for C and hopefully D will go away...

Anybody have clues for how to "fix" that cracking sound? It's like a softer click sound that only happens when pressing in the bottom-right corner. It happens even if the clickpad is already depressed.

Hello gang! I've ordered an Envy 14 without radiance, but it wouldn't allow me to select the mobile broadband option. Have any of you without the radiance display seen if the antennas for this are included anyway to allow me to buy the broadband card afterwards and install it? Thank you in advance for the help!

What do you mean by cracking noise?I clicked left and right pad and seems to be producing a normal sound.

I dont think anyone here have a 3G card installed on their E14 and when I order it, there is no option for that as well.

I'm having a touchpad problem, even with the most up-to-date drivers. If I have my right thumb over the "left click" button and use my right index finger to scroll, the cursor is okay most of the time but will frequently jump or freeze. To unfreeze it, I have to release both fingers from the pad.

I'd love to keep the laptop, but as long as the touchpad is unreliable, I can't see myself keeping it.

As I said in another forum, I can't believe they'd ship something like this -- it's like having the keyboard start sending random characters if your fingers are anywhere near the "home" keys.

Has anyone else successfully fixed this problem with their laptop? Most of the advice I've read has involved installing dubious 3rd-party programs or re-training myself to use the touchpad differently (which strikes me as a comical solution -- A:"When I press the accelerator the car brakes." B:"Learn to use the brake as the accelerator! It's a great car!"

Hey guys, I've had my Envy for around several weeks now and am liking it a lot. Save for the CPU whine and mediocre battery life, I really like the overall package. The only thing is that I balked at doing a clean install since I'd never done it before and people had seemed to run into problems.

The Minimized Image Recovery looks like a superior option for me at this point, but I held up on THAT because my Momentus XT hadn't yet shipped to me.

But how do I coordinate doing a Minimized Image Recovery along with replacing the hard drive?

It should work fine from the recovery discs, or if you image the recovery partition over to the Momentous XT.

dunno if this was mentioned b4, but there's also a review on Cnet. I don't really like Cnet, but it there and mostly positive. It's not on the first page so i thought i'd mention it. It got an "excellent" rating, woohoo.
