The recent envy 15 shipments have been shipping with 2GB Micron Tech 1066 CL - 7, P/N MT16JSF25664HZ-1G1F1 , surprisingly made in China (well not to surprising I guess).. Since HP normally does very large contracts for memory I would bet the 14 will be coming with the same parts.

Not for me, I have 8GB and have gotten to well over 6GB when multitasking several things. Keep in mind with 4 threads (or 8 on i7's) going you can really run a lot of powerful apps at once.

I tried asking a rep today about the touchpad and she was unsure if the new synaptics touch pad would be on it. Does anyone have any other information on this besides what's on the first page? It would be nice to have the new one, but I haven't had the chance to try out the old one either.

Any word on the screen other than "not much to say, just it's supposed to be the absolute best"?
What matrix is it? What percentage of the Adobe Color Gamut does it cover? Viewing angles?

The most intensive thing that I'll be doing, as a reminder, is PCSX2 and Dolphin. Next in line is SC2 on ultra. Next after that, is watever someone recommends I do with 4gb of ram lol.

Any word on whether the 4gb sticks are from the same brand/spec?

EDIT: Micron is just like Samsung, aren't they? They sell their chips to the likes of Patriot and Corsair who then rebrand the chips and add other components.

From Wikipedia: "Micron Technology ("Micron") NASDAQ: MU is a multinational company based in Boise, Idaho, USA, best known for producing many forms of semiconductor devices. This includes DRAM, SDRAM, flash memory, SSD and CMOS image sensing chips. Most consumers are more familiar with its consumer brand Crucial Technology. Micron Technology is among the worldwide top 20 semiconductor sales leaders."

And apparently they don't make their ram in China: "Micron survived and eventually acquired the memory businesses of rivals Texas Instruments in 1998 and Toshiba in 2001. These acquisitions gave Micron an international presence with production facilities in Italy, Singapore, and Japan. Today Micron is the only DRAM manufacturer in the United States and its primary competitors include Samsung, Hynix, and Elpida."

Are there any consolidated posts of Linux on Envy 14 knowledge? I can only hope that the 14 isn't plagued by the same type of bios problems as the 15 Gen1 was at launch.

After seeing Apple's successes with the iPod, the Macbook line, and now the iPad, I'm convinced where a product made is insignificant in deciding its quality. China is just a place to lower costs while retaining design/manufacturing techniques.

    Sorry

we won't be doing SC2 on ultra.

    or high.

Phase 2 messed with things horribly (optimization got kinda crappy depending on your computer it can get extremely crappy)

Now. This is in part due to a bunch of debugging and error checking code running behind the scenes in phase 2.

But unless "some performance drop" is 120 fps to 40-50 fps for some people with awesome cards...I dunno.

That being said blizzard did add in v-sync and the like and turning it on and off for whatever reason doesn't stop screen tearing for some people so maybe v-sync is breaking things.

also several new marine death animations (zealots slicing marines in half)

    Well. I'm not positive.

Ya see this is why I want my laptop to show up before the end of the week to see how it runs with all that other background stuff going on.

This one dude with a 5770 couldn't get above 10 fps on medium to large fights in 1v1.

'course he's also on a phenom processor of some sort and gen 1 phenoms are buggy as hell sometimes.

so his cpu just might be committing suicide.

SC2 is heating up computers pretty badly in phase 2.

partly due to the debugging code (it didn't heat 'em up this badly in phase 1)

High will probably work with some tweaks here and there on launch.

because. well people with 5870s and GTX265s can't get ultra to run right now without almost frying their video cards.

these are desktop cards not laptop cards too.

Methinks blizzard made a mistake somewhere in phase 2 and/or the debugging code is screwing things up somewhere

Excuse me?? Micron is one of the top memory manufacturers in the world, they make OEM memory for patriot and several other brand name companies. They also make the flash memory for the intel SSD's. They are 50% partners with intel on a new 4 billion $ foundry.

You can probably run all those at the same time:p

    Yes

I seem to remember something about a craptacular Broadcom (BOOO) adapter for WiFi. Is this a standard miniPCI card that I could replace with an Intel card instead? Does the current card have bluetooth and wifi on the same chip? I've been considering either an Intel 6300 or 6250 (6300+WiMAX) - would it be a good idea to grab the WiMAX card instead, or will the Envy14's antenna not be conducive to picking up the signal?

Ya, I just found out that they make the stuff for Crucial, so I'm back to being satisfied lol (if it's in fact true).

You serious? The first beta works on my desktop with 256mb ATI Radeon 9600PRO, running on low. I have a crappy old CPU too: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ OC'd to 2.25ghz. Single core btw.

How come user JJB says I'd prolly be able to run SC2+PCSX2+Dolphin all at same time, then? LOL

    hmmm...

*shrugs* Maybe random people are just having issues and have crap running in the background, etc + the debugging code.

looking around blizz has also made it so editing variables.txt doesn't do anything in phase 2 (probably will work again when the game is released) so..*shrugs*

They're doing something in phase 2.

    also dookie.

I'm just looking at anecdotes from people on team liquid and the sc2 beta tech support and bug report forums.

the heating issues came from team liquid.

fps and other issues more from the sc2 beta forums

couple of the devs (on the sc2 beta forums) mentioned the "dude we're running extra crap in the background and it's probably slowing things down" stuff.

Anyway. we'll see. If we can fully edit the variables.txt when the game is released pretty sure things will work out.

At least we'll be able to turn creep down to low (since creep generation REALLY REALLY REALLy pisses of the gpu right now. And kinda has throughout beta)

    @MagusDraco

Not sure if you have seen the notebookcheck data on the 5650 HERE

No SC2 specific results but they do have a lot of FPS performance data on a lot of newer games at different settings. If you are not aware, all of notebookcheck's benchmarks and gaming data are from standard clocked GPU's, they due not allow OC'd GPU data in there results, so if the 5650 OC's anywere near as well as the 5830 you should expect about a 20 to 25% performance boost over what they list.

How many other people on here are gonna reinstall windows first thing? Does the Envy14 come with a windows 7 disc or what?

Also on battery: Whats the best way to condition my battery for the best possible life? Should i plug in my envy before i boot it for the first time or should I boot it off battery and wait for it to die before i give it a full charge?

you have to provide your own win 7 disc (microsoft has free ones to grab)

I think I'm gonna first test out the sc2 beta for the day or two it will still be up (assuming my computer gets here by thursday/friday)

after the sc2 beta goes down I'll clean install and go from there

Ya it was confirmed a long time ago, or at least I concluded ;) , that the 5650 would be fine for at least HIGH-everything in SC2. I assumed so, cuz my oldas$ desktop R9600Pro can do Low-everything, and this is a dinosaur. I safely assumed that 1gb compared to my 256mb gpu would be able to do HIGH safely.

Anyhoo, going to bed guys. Nite!

That won't even fit in the socket, LOL. that's a 240 pin desktop / server size. You need to look for 204 pin SODIMM DDR3. As far as 2GB with a 4GB there is no problem, that's how HP ships the 6GB options. The new controllers from intel don't require balance DIMM's

    @zeth006 & S.M.

Try this for $95.98 with the coupon code; W1066SB4GS Super Talent DDR3-1066 SODIMM 4GB Samsung Chip Notebook Memory - DDR3 SODIMM 200 Pin - SuperBiiz.com

BTW if you have an i5 or i3 then 1333Mhz is a useless upgrade, as the memory controller can only run 1066Mhz max so 1333Mhz, like I have, just gets downclocked to 1066Mhz. I just got 1333Mhz because it was like $30 cheaper at the time. I have had great luck with ewiz.com and they always seem to have great prices, sign up for email updates and they send coupons out weekly...

I don't think it will mess anything up, but i don't think you'll find one with the correct screen size since the Envy 14 uses a non standard 14.5" screen.
