Never actually listened to that model, I had an old pair of HP 280 pro's and there were fairly good especially for the price, so yours should be also...

I hate to post this here and ask but this is the only thread people will check and respond:

I just ordered a laptop from HP with the 30% BCB and I've got my confirmation email saying I'm getting 450 back. If I call HP and have them refund 200 dollars to me to avoid canceling my purchase, will this void my BCB or just lower it?

Reading their FAQ about HP it says:

    4. Partial returns of an order will be recalculated and the cashback will apply to the new total purchase amount before taxes and shipping charges.

Does this mean they'll subtract 200 from my purchase, then recalculate the 30%?

Got $110 off after calling in, on top of my 10% EPP discount! Plus hopefully Bing cashback comes through but I doubt it.

    Sick deal.

beats headphones in general are not good for the price. For less than $300, you can buy much better headphones, such as Beyerdynamic DT880s (which can be bought for around $200).

I find my superfi 5s to be decently detailed. I can only imagine the 10s to be more detailed. The triplefi 10s are rated pretty highly in general, so your opinion is not in line with most others. Not saying your opinion is wrong, but just saying that most people consider it good.

Try looking for an old model of SHURE e2c or e3c on ebay. You can find some brand new in the package pretty easily. These were once 3 figures!

PS, Sennheiser HD 650s sound immaculate on the e15, but those are probably well out of the price range of many. Definitely comb the head-fi selling boards, that's where I got my 650s for less than half their retail and they were nearly new.

Well SSD's are robust, MTBF isn't the failure time for that drive, but the failure based on number of drives manufactured. So basically one in 1.2 million units will fail every hour prematurely during their normal lifespan. Assuming all 1.2 million units were manufactured at the same time that would be 8,760 units a year failing prematurely. Prematurely could mean any time before the 10,000 cycle limit though, and not necessarily the whole drive. At least that's what I remember from my six sigma training.

You calculate life by taking capacity (160GB) divided by write speed (80MB/s) = 2000 sec ~ 33 minutes * 10,000 cycles = 5500 hours = ~ 0.63 years or ~ 8 months of continuous writing across the whole drive 24/7. Of course you will never do that, and clearly the larger drive and free space the better.

But in reality you'll most likely write 10GB per day on average for regular useage. With GC/Trim this can extend the life of your drive to 5, 6, 7 years even.

It appears that the 256gb SSD will be Western Digital. If you read back in the thread, there is even a part #. Looks like it will be the siliconedge blue from WD, but there is no way to know for sure until people get the machines

Yes the WD has trim but if we get samsung it has to have this firmware
    DSRD 2.1.0 Firmware

Toshiba has only two models with trim:
Toshiba's new 32nm HG3 and SG2 Series support the TRIM Command implemented in Windows 7.

I should do a clean Windows 7 install?

How hard is it to do that? And then download drivers and whatnot?

Swsetup folder has all the drivers. Look back a few pages for warnings against doing a clean install and see if that applies to you.

Back up all your sw_setup folder files as they should have some drivers. I'd still check online to see if any drivers have been updated.

This might be a dumb question, but once you have all those drivers saved and you install a fresh copy of Windows 7, do you just put them in the new sw_setup folder? And then you're all set?

i'm gonna do a clean install, bought an aftermarket ssd so my only concern i guess would be the touchpad drivers/settings?

reading here, i honestly had no idea things like this mattered. i've always clean installed on my laptops and just downloaded whatever drivers i needed from the support site

Ah, ok thanks. Also! I couldn't find this in the HP Laptop Out-Of-The-Box Guide, but do they have to be done in any specific order? (I seem to remember something about this in the CW forum, back in the Stone Age, when I was considering that laptop.) And (final question!), do I have to restart after each one?

    Thanks again!

    pretty much.

also lviv. When I say save all the touchpad stuff.

it's because this touchpad is notoriously bad after a clean install. HP modifies some of the settings or something

at least in the case of some people.

the latest drivers fix some of it (or make it better) but still.

HP seems to tweak it some which is why you should go and screenshot or write down the settings.

you'll find that stuff over (on windows 7) Control Panel --> hardware and sound ---> Devices and printer at the top has mouse in little blue letters beneath it. click that. ---> Go through each mouse tab and write down or screenshot everything. --->

Get to the device settings tab with the synaptics logo (that red and white thing) ---> click settings. Check out all the settings on there and copy them down. Stuff like the tap zones, what the buttons do, how virtual scrolling is setup (this is where you can turn on and off that one finger scrolling stuff in the far right corner and bottom part of the touchpad), edge motion (I never use this, no clue what it really does), and well the sensitivity (that thing that stops the mouse from going crazy if you accidentally hit it with your left thumb...ya know by setting dead zones and stuff)

The multimedia software, some folks like. A few other things too.

There is an order sort of. Start with chipset, then video, then audio, then the rest. Some might have other orders they prefer. BUt you want to get those three out of the way early.

    Nope.

Yes you can. Choose custom in the setup menu. Follow instructions from there. You will need to reformat the partition.

Your confusing manufacturing and six sigma standards with Telcordia methodology tetsing which is what intel bases their testing on

    From intels SSD datasheet;

"3.5.2 The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is estimated based on Telcordia methodology and demonstrated through Reliability Demonstration Test (RDT)."

    A breif quoted definition of MTBF from a telcordia white paper followed by a description of what is tested for and a reference to Military standard 217 that this is all based on;

"MTBF is the abbreviated term for Mean Time Between Failures. It is the average time expected between failures of a repairable component over some specified time period. MIL-STD-217 and Telcordia are the most popular MTBF prediction guidelines."

" Standards based reliability prediction calculates failure rates by summing, or "rolling up," the failure rates of all components and subassemblies to the system level. It may (depending on the method used by the analysis) also add the failure rates associated with the components' solder joint connections and other types of construction, such as surface mounts and printed circuit boards (PCBs) or hybrid devices.

The standards typically estimate the system reliability by relying on base failure rates for the components in the system. The base failure rates describe the components while operating under "normal" (determined by the standard) environmental conditions. The base failure rates are then multiplied by various factors (called pi factors, ranging between 0 and 1) that describe the specific conditions/stress in which the component is used and, in the case of some standards (such as MIL-217), by factors that describe the quality of the component."

I have skipped over the hundreds of pages of the MIL-217 standard and the mathmatics which you can review if you wish, the bottom line is for component electronic items MTBF means just what it says, the average time it will take a given part (SSD in this case) to fail within a defined set of parameters. Intel specifies what it bases this on while many manufacturers do not. there are dozens of official MTBF standards and 100's of 'made up' marketing definitions of MTBF. This is also why military toilet seats cost $800, sometimes they have to test 100 units to determin how long they will last before they fail :( That would be a fun job....

    Ouch.

    just ouch.

I was taught about six sigma and how to completely and totally fake a QC project in Minitab.

That's about all I got out of QC besides QC being very very important and something I do not want to do.

Ok, maybe. I came from automotive engineering. This is why I've always referred to Engineering as an art and not a science because science is exact. engineering is +/- 50% LOL.
