Used to be the same here, but all the retailers in Aus (that im aware off) have stopped giving keys with pre-orders.
-
Is the i3 basically a core 2 duo?
-
Sounds like this is the 256gb SSD were getting WD SiliconEdge Blue 256 GB SATA Solid State Drives ( SSC-D0256SC-2100 )
Im pleased.....the only thing i was really concerned with was TRIM. -
Speaking of SC2... does anyone have a beta key they arent using anymore? I have just been playing the uhh... not-so-legal-single-player one, and I'd love to try it out online =]
-
No.. The i3 the same technology as the i5. The lower i3s just have lower clock speeds by model compared to i5. But if you compare the same clock speed of a core 2 duo to that of an i3, the i3 would be the better performer.

MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
what you mean the ai one.
speaking of which, they unlocked all the ai finally. insane ai cheats blatantly (but that makes sense).
downside (or upside if you're looking for a challenge) there's gonna be an insane difficulty for the campaign mode (campaign has four difficulties instead of one like in sc1) -
yea the AI one. But it gets old veryyyy fast because the AI acts the same every game, regardless of difficulty lol. Can anyone help me out?

Sorry if this has been covered, but I was curious if SSD drives can be cloned from normal HDDs?
Envy #1 should be here Friday, but I couldn't turn down the BCB so Envy #2 w/SSD is ordered and should be eventually on the way. I was going to try out #1 when it gets here, though. Would it be a bad idea to clean install #1, get all my programs like I want them, and just clone the HDD to the SSD when the new one gets here before sending back the first one...? I guess I would have to reactivate windows too... Maybe this is more work than its worth. -
Same! But I am just going to wait.
-
No, cloning from a regular HDD works, but it messes with the filing system a SSD uses. Its highly recommened to do a fresh install or clone from another SSD.
-
Why do you suppose Intel new line of CPU's use odd number. . . i7,i5,i3 is it just random or do the number mean anything?
-

marketing
...I guess -
Thanks! I knew they stored stuff differently, just didn't know if the controllers/cloning programs compensated for that.
Thanks to some unfortunate purchases with some other manufacturers, this will be the 4th laptop I get to do a full reinstall/setup since March. So, at least I'm used to it...
Was just trying to save myself some time. -
same reason some are called dual core and others core 2 duo
binge drinking -
Pre order it get key cancel order free beta :O
-
they arent handing out keys with preorders anymore =\

Now that all five million Envy systems have gotten through clearance in Anchorage, FedEx says I will have mine in the morning by 10:30 PST. Might get some sleep tonight but not likely.

-
Time to go get a 4pack of Red Bull!
-
These are my current pair of headphones (well, earbuds). I love'em. Much better than the multiple skullcandy's or even the shure e2c I owned.
-
Please confirm which 256GB SSD that is as soon as you get it. Thanks!
-
wow can't wait to see you review that beast of a machine. And pleeeeease tell me which 256gb SSD we are getting... I am anxiously excited for you! Congrats! -
Can you install an SSD yourself?
Do you just install it in the HDD slot? -
Yup its pretty easy
-
Yes and yes. Just HP's prices are hard to beat for the Intel 160GB and (possibly) WD 256GB. Particularly if you can get cash back.
-
Yes. A Logitech VX Nano.
How much did you pay for CS5? -
Helen-- So, so eager to hear your impressions of your monster laptop! Let us know!
-
Ditto to what he/she said. I'm very curious to know about battery life and heat with your configuration.
-
Yeah. Not that their numbers are currently taking a hit for it, but Intel seriously needs to do something about their marketing strategy. With the i3, i5, or i7 moniker, dual core or quad core configuration, and then a bevy of different model numbers and suffixes, the average consumer's head has got to be spinning trying to figure out exactly what they're buying or what they want/need to buy.
-
I don't get it, the Crucial C300 128GB is $334 on newegg. It really stomps the intel in performance and power consumption. I have a feeling that my reasoning is flawed due to how many people are jumping on pairing their buy with a ssd. But really though, the forum is making me feel like a total newb for not buying one. Am I? It just seems like by the time the laptop actually ships and gets to my front door step there will already be a new, faster, cheaper ssd that I can simply pop in. Then, I can have a 320 gb hdd I can keep as an external. Then the world is a happy place. What's wrong with that?
...Basically I'm just envious of all your huge ssd touting e-phalluses
Someone comfort me -
That is exactly what their marketing plan is, the idea is to confuse the common retail buyer into thinking they are getting the best performance new tech by advertising just the 'new icore family' as only i3,i5 or i7 series, clean and simple with the bigger number = better performance. They don't want them to know that a i3-330M is different the a i3-330UM version etc.... all the cusomer at Wallmart understands is the numbers while one part is actually much lower cost and performance than the other....
PS: I didn't even check if those are actual real numbers, it's just an example. -
We are still here, but since there is no active actual technical discussion going on, I am just lurking..
The split of the thread was much needed and is very much appreciated.
I can understand the need to discuss savings etc because it IS a lot of money, but I couldnt keep up with all that flooding the discussion...
I am looking forward to see the first american impressions (other countries also welcome)..
One information: Connecting a projector over Mini Display Port, a MD-VGA Adapter and then VGA cable needs the dedicated video to work properly..
Same with a three screen setup..
The internal graphics seems not to be able to use all of the graphic features concerning the video out options..
I dont mind it, just for others to keep in mind before they are fumbling around before a presentation. It can save you some trouble.. -
I was going to wait for the 3rd gen Intel x25-m until the 30% bcb appeared.
The Intel x25/x18 both have amazing (AFAIK: the best) random read/write speeds, which are the speeds you notice. The Intels are also supposed to last a ridiculously long time.
*pats whiteroachr on the head* it'll be okay. an SSD is just an upgrade. it's not required. -
Yeah, I am a little worried. Expecting a hit on both heat and battery life, but I am okay with that, up to a point. Will be happy to post the info on the SSD. This is a wonderful forum, and I have learned a lot following it.
HP Envy 14
• Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-840QM processor (1.86GHz, 8MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.2 GHz
• 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 256GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
• 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 Graphics - For Quad Core Processors
• 14.5" diagonal HD+ HP Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900)
You know the rest -
I choose to remain optimistic for you.
I don't recall- did you order the slice battery, too? Who knows, maybe with the slice, overall battery life for this configuration won't be so bad. ...or maybe, despite all the conjecture, standard battery life will be better than we thought. Either way, I'm eager to hear your impressions!
Same here- I'm glad I was able to find this forum. There's some very helpful info. floating about. -
Haha. Hilarious. I felt the exact same way until I realized that a) I need a lot more storage than is being offered with those 2 SSD options, and b) prices on SSDs are going to drop dramatically in the coming years. So, if I can just hang on for a while, it will be a very easy and relatively more affordable upgrade in the near future. Feel any better?
Ok...I'm done for the night. Hope we hear from some US Envy owners tomorrow! -
Screw you! Now I'm tempted to stay up just to see whether it comes back!
-
I am also still following this thread but this is just too much noise going on for everyday reading. So I concentrate on scanning the topic from times to times...
But I am active in the Envy 14 Linux thread. -
One of my friends advised me that SSDs were a colossal waste of money. He told me that you notice maybe ~10 sec faster bootup and several second faster startup times for applications, but it does nothing to speed up the application itself.
I just went with the base HDD and intend to plant a Momentus XT in its place. -
How good is the Momentus XT compared to the base 7200RPM 320gb HDD?
-
Mod already addressed this...but, have no fear, things will settle down once people in the US actually receive their Envy 14's. Right now, I think what you're witnessing is a lot of anxious technophiles.
-
So has any battery test of Wlan surfing on energy saving mode been done yet by anyone ?
-
Hi guys I am looking to getting the HP Envy 14. I my primary ( and exclusive OS) is linux and would rather use the Intel HD graphics on the device than the ATI card. can anyone confirm what the resolution of the display is when you switch to the Internal Intel Graphic card
-
Is there a difference between the 5650 when you order a 2Core or a Quad?
Because some listings say:
"ATI 5650 - for quad core processors"
Are the quads equipped with a better cooling system so that the 5650 can run higher clocked? -
The screen resolution is always 1600x900, it has nothing to do with the graphics the laptop is using.
-
Nope, the Intel i7 quad core processors don't have an integrated graphics chip on them, this means the laptop cannot use switchable graphics. So both are the same graphics card, but laptops configured with dual core processor rather than quad core will be able to use switchable graphics.
-
FOR PEEPS WANTING THE ENVY 14 IN THE UK ITS COMING!!! £999 - i5-450M - 4GB RAM - 500 GB HDD - oh and the down side you ready for it and screen resolution of 1366 x 768!!!!!!! (check the specifications doc on the link below)
HP Laptops - HP Envy 14-1050ea -
Not sure exactly. The only review of it I've seen was the Anandtech review.
-
Your friend was wrong on several fronts. Plus anything that requires disk I/O benefits significantly from an SSD.
I know. It's hard to justify the cost/GB of an SSD. That is until you own one. And what's ironic is that I find that those who don't own one seem to make up all sorts of negatives about SSDs when the only real disadvantage to the end user is cost per GB and lower capacity as compared to a HDD.
