Ah!!! If only we know this issue earlier...most people opt for the 520, mine is in production now...no way to change it to 450.

That issue exists since core 2 duo processors on a very few computers because as someone said in the other thread "this is due to capacitor resonnance"... So in the end if the concerned capacitor is like (with a lot lot of bad luck) soldered with the angle that allows it to produce resonnance you'll get the whinning sound lol. I bet the HP techs who knows this issue won't even replace the motherboard and just fix the capacitor so that it doesn't resonnate anymore.
So maybe for a rma you won't get 3 weeks delay for a new motherboard ? That would be cool for you.

overclocking is a funny part of the warranty :p

companies say overclocking voids the devices, but there's no way they can tell for sure that you did it, which makes it so it doesn't really void the warranty

if you don't change the voltages, odds are you won't permanently damage stuff

Would getting a laptop with a lower native resolution result in better gaming performance? Because I want to run Battlefield Bad Company 2 at least on medium settings and Im worried I might not be able to do that with the Envy's screen. Help?

Yes the lower screen resolution will add 5-10 FPS.

The issue is not brand specific :/ (although it seems to happen more often to some companies than others, meaning the motherboards are the main cause).

It's an issue of either :
    - Some faulty intel cpu's causing resonnance on 100% normal motherboards.
    - or an issue that is 100% motherboard specific (sick capacitor) that will happen with any C4 state enabled cpu.
    - or both...

No one knows... we can only hope intel fixed it on 450m if it is cpu sided.
Anyway there's nothing to be afraid of... its only a very few numbers of laptops that get it (which goes toward the theory of the sick capacitor lol) and I'm sure that even if it happens to you, you can always ask hp for a good 100$ refund for the unacceptable inconvenience and delay.

This is the reason I'm hoping BCB returns one more time so I can get an HP warranty cheap.

it is possible to lower the screen resolution manually from 1600x900 in game right?
Im trying to get as much gaming performance out of my new laptop as possible and if that means getting the dv6tse's lower res screen then fine.

So to the person wondering about tf2 performance, I was playing earlier with a bloke who said he had a ATI 5470, i5 and had everything maxed with ~50 FPS
Now he didn't seem very confident about his knowledge, and said he was "Reading from the card he got with his computer", so take this with a grain of salt
Still, I'm thinking good performance should be had :D
(also, right thread? this has nothing to do with shipping, discounts, so I wasn't sure. Spare me 2.0 :p)

TF2 should work well. Source games are known to be more CPU dependent than normal games. However, TF2 has yet to be optimized for multiple cores, so that should be taken into consideration. That said, it should be able to max out on a 5650. Heck, I'm on a 7300 GT right now and it plays albeit it's on lowest settings.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't reduce the resolution in the game options. You should be fine. But, here's a video from someone with a 3820TG w/ 5650 using an external monitor at 1920x1080 with most settings on high! I believe he OC'ed his 5650 to a ~9000 3dMark06 score, but you can do that on the Envy as well (if the cooling is up to snuff).

You can play at any resolution the screen or game will support.

now it may not look as good at a non native resolution (1600x900 is the native resolution for this computer's monitor unless you're buying it in the UK or singapore or something) and things may look a bit uh...I dunno how to explain it.

    fuzzy isn't really right.

if source stuff (for the most part) runs fine on a core2 duo 2ghz and a go 7700 (when you bring in the updates to HL2 and HL2Ep1 it gets a bit iffy) it should work fine on the envy no problem

    QUICK NOTE:

If you see a post about shipping, BCB, etc that is against the rules of the thread, kindly point the poster to the first post of the thread with link to rules and link to other thread.

Otherwise, I just end up moving the post and posts that respond to it and the poster might not know what happened to their post and where it was transferred to.

    Thanks,

    Overworked and starving management. :(

Otherwise the thread rules may not work out and it will return to a free for all.

I hope for the rest of your sakes that my machine is an isolated incident - It's driving the hell out of me. When bing went to 30% and HP refused to help me out price wise with this machine, I just ordered another one (and a DV6 for a family member) with plans of returning the first. The second had the same specs but with an i5-450 rather than the 520 and an extra standard battery rather than the slice.

With that said, I can't stress this enough - This computer is leaps and bounds ahead of others I have owned. The only other REAL gripe I have about it is the keyboard flex on the right side, but it's really not a big deal at all.

While I was downloading 3dmark06, I took a look at my battery bar meter and it showed discharging at a rate of almost 8W...Is this even possible? I'm in a low light room, screen at about 50%, backlit keyboard on, just surfing.

I read earlier that someone did a clean install on their envy 15 and it messed up their touchpad. I was going to do a clean install when I got my envy 14 but now I am reconsidering. Then I though ok I won’t do a clean install but I’ll just get rid of all the crapware HP puts on the laptop but then I thought maybe there is a software that will mess the touchpad up as well (since the person with the e15 tried to play around with the settings having no luck after reinstalling). Should I still do a clean install?

I already know Team Fortress 2 will be dominated by the 5650.

I hate that forum. They made me spend nearly $800 in headphones. I'm sadly looking to buy Klipsch S4's soon. Ugh. Stupid Head-fi.

EDIT: They didn't make me spend anything, they just convinced me it was worth it. haha I hate them for it. My ears are in love with them though.
