I don't see why people get so frustrated with the 1099 price and the i3.
You need to be reminded that the 4th of July weekend has promotions only on i5 computers. Which also explains the removal of the i5 in the Envy 15 and 17.
Im 95% sure the configuration will change after next week.
-
I can't get any to work, even the $10 one they sent me in my email for SIGNING up for the student discount! I guess I'll be calling to order it..who knows, maybe I can sweet talk them into increasing it.
-
I went with the 500gb, even though I really want a momentus XT. That way if i decide not to upgrade later I won't be screwed with a small drive. However, I have a pretty large media/games library that will take up 250+ GB most likely.
-
I'm not so sure. We knew for a while based on the datasheets that there would be an i3 "option," and many figured it would be in the base model.
It would be nice, though. -
Bah. I was hoping even if a $100 coupon came out on top of my 10% discount would be a pretty decent deal. I'd rather get the immediate discount than wait for Bing to send me my money.
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
If BCB comes up higher, you could sign up for a new HP account or purchase without logging in.
Besides, there's gotta be a way to remove the student discount. After all, you're not a student forever... -
From what I understood i7 core were designed to run a QPI bus (25GT/s max or so) but I 5 were crippled with another solution that was the older DMI bus (running at only 2,5 GT/s) by increasing the DMI bus speed intel is bringing the i5 raw data bandwidth between processor and the rest closer to a expensive QPI setup.
The firsts I7 clocked at 2,66 ghz can reach near 4,8GT/s of raw data processing and so were using QPI interface, while the older core i5 were slightly bottlenecked (especially when two cores were turboed) with a 2,5 GT/s DMI controller.
That's just for raw data before any instruction or processing, that's why in the end there's not a +100% performance gain like some might expect (even if you feed more raw data the processor can only process a certain ammount of GT/s afterwards, that's why QPI's theoretical max 25GT/s and DMI 10GT/s are still far from reached).
Now that intel found a way to produce 4,8 GT/s capable dmi controllers the i5 is not anymore bottlenecked even when in turbo mode hence the impressive performance gain for the same clock rate (around 2,6ghz and + that's where I think the older DMI are starting to bottleneck the CPU's max GT/s processing).
That's what I understood from reading various articles about DMI and QPI. Correct me if I'm wrong. -
Just also got the confirmation from the guy at HP that they expect the Envy to ship tomorrow from their logistic center. Until now their story seems to add up^^
-
Yeah. I have come to terms with the fact that 10% is fine. It'll cover the taxes I have to pay and then a little bit.
If one of those crazy $300 coupons does come out, then I'll just order without logging into my HPA account. -
Good idea. That's what I'm going to do as well. I have a 1TB EHD though, but oh well, space is good.
It's also not much more expensive. I may wait a year to buy the momentus, and hopefully more hybrids will be out for less money.
-
Well, alumnus are eligible too, so yes, you're a student forever, lol. Just seems odd that you can't remove it. Oh well, just sign up for another account. For BCB it's best to have the same email for BCB and the vendor where you order from.
-
Just range hp germany now informed release date is 5th July
-
My games library alone would eat up the whole 160gb SSD. Now, for those of us who have a main gaming desktop that's perfectly fine. For me this will be my main rig. Many different people, many different needs.
Battery life shouldn't surprise anyone, nor should the base price. I'm also not surprised about the i3, however the lack of proper high end dual cores is a let down and a big surprise
. The slice is just an abomination
.... lucky for me I didn't plan on buying it.
Discounts would have been nice
... but I can't hold that against them.
-
Actually thats only true in the sense that new orders wont be processed right away as they are waiting for the second shipment.
The first shipment is expected to reach them tomorrow...
Or where did you find your information? -
Hi guys, I have been reading this thread all along and I am about to purchase the Envy 14. So just two questions:
-For warranty, if you selected "none" the laptop still comes with limited warranty right?
-And battery life with the crappy GPU (the intel one) is ~6 or 8 hours correct? And about 3-4 with the ATI GPU?
Thanks! -
Consider that a DV6t:se with 430m, 320gb hdd, and 5650 comes up, like, $130 short (using HPA on both models, including the current 150 rebate on the DV6t:se) of the similarly specc'd Envy 14 (though the Envy has a higher capacity battery, a screen that doesn't blow, a lack of plastic in the build) I'd be frankly surprised if there were a large quantity of large coupons. They're already netting a relatively low profit margin when you consider that "premium" models can generally sell significantly fewer parts but still generate more revenue then their mainstream counterparts.
-
I was told by hp sales (phone call) they have problems getting the "tips" or something like cert and are delayed till 5th of july.

Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
If it's mostly Steam, and most of your games don't have installation limits (should be on the right side of the store page), you can keep the ones you're not playing as backups, either by using Steam's built-in backup or simply copying the relevant \steamapps files and folders onto an external HDD. Personally, I'd recommend keeping your entire library backed up like that and just keeping the relevant games on your laptop at any given time. -
Of course. But it with an AMEX card and the warranty gets extended from 1 year to 2 years by the AMEX's benefits.
Your guess, my good sir, is as good as ours. HP is saying the laptop can get 8 hours off the internal 8 cell, of course thats with a minimum brightness screen staring at a blank desktop, wifi and bluetooth off and even then they probably rounded up to the highest plausible whole number. 6 is probably a reasonable estimate, with another 4 or so added by the battery slice if you opt for it.
I won't even try to speculate about the ATI GPU, but since you're about to buy it like you said you might as well pull the trigger - if the battery life fails to satisfy you HP has a painless 21-day no questions asked return policy. -
Just got an email confirmation saying my order has been dropped to the factory with a scheduled ship date of July 6!
-
Did you order it yesterday ?
It would be nice if they actually stood by the dates they gave us this time around... -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah. that would be nice
-
Ship date of 7/6 isn't bad - maybe I will just order one today too.
-
Who did you call and when did you get that information? ademmer and me both got the same quotes about tomorrow as recent as this afternoon at 2pm...
Please get more specific, if you need per PM -
i called at 5pm today, i called 01 805 66 57 75 home sales
-
I ordered about 1:15am pacific time Sunday morning iirc. I'm still skeptical given the 17s huge delays, but they can bet I'll be asking for a discount if they miss the date.
-
this is exactly what I do. Even with a larger SSD I have a lot of games on steam, 3/4 of which are downloaded and backed up on an external hdd. Only really have like 4 games installed that I flip between regularly or am trying to beat.
-
I just ordered it!
Here it goes...
Estimated ship date: July 8, 2010.
I'm glad the choice has been made. It is a little more than I expected to pay, but this machine is going to last me all 4 years of college (and hopefully into grad school as well). I plan on buying another 1 dimm 4GB ram in a year or so. I'm also going to get a Squaretrade warranty, but I'm not activating it until the day that I leave for school. Now I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy my summer.
-
How is anyone getting estimated ship date when it's the actual build date?
-
Damn, dont tell me this kind of bad news.. I need the laptop for work...
-
I know, cant believe they have pushed back the date till 5th of july for germany per what i was told by the sale rep.
Ill ring tomorrow, hopefully he is wrong if he is ill order one tomorrow. -
Question for you guys. Anyone here from OUTSIDE the US but used a mail forwarding service to order the laptop? (Or an HP laptop in general?).
Reason im asking is because i have a US mail forwarding address, (and i put it into my cards Ship To Addresses) but it still doesnt allow me to go through. -
I called to order, and she told me that.
edit: she= the lady whom I was hoping to get an extra discount from, but who wouldn't even honor my $10 email coupon since I was using academic discount. I love ordering online so much more than talking to a rep... -
I ordered mine on Sunday. I am second guessing my choice of CPU (the i5-520m). Still excited however.
-
You might need to call HP and ask them. Or you could use a package forwarding service.
-
Why are you second guessing? (I ordered the same.)Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015

" Estimated ship date:
Your customized HP ENVY 14 customizable Notebook PC will be
built by July 7, 2010"
Its the estimated ship and built by date. -
Oh, and if you order accessories they ship those separately. I should have that nice, shiny monitor in less than a week.
-
It's been a while since I have dug deeply into processors so it's really about a lack of good knowledge. I am not going to do anything too intense with the laptop- play video, music (lossless), surf, and occasionally play a game (lotro, or some steam game like portal et. al). I am second guessing myself because I have the opportunity to spend the cash but didn't get the most powerful cpu i could into the unit. Rationally, I think the better battery life and heat is worth the tradeoff. I didn't say my second guessing was rational

I was thinking of buying the same monitor you got yesterday, but I just ordered a wireless mouse for like $15 with the laptop. I am probably gonna order it later this month maybe if BCB goes to 25%. Let me know how you like it! I plan on hooking my laptop and xbox to it for school.
-
Quite honestly, when I read the first half of your statement I would have told you to go with the i5-450m based on what you're going to be doing. But then I saw you have extra cash to spend...so you could have afforded the i-7. I think you'll be well pleased with the compromise; it should be more than enough power for you and should also last a few years.
Your reasons for getting it (battery and heat) are why I chose the 520 over the 720qm. -
Ok, I'll pm you now so I won't forget when it comes in. It was a really good price, and I'm not sure the instant rebates (I think it is usually $215+) will last long.
You have the same intentions that I do with it! It's going in my dorm room and will be my computer monitor (for my new envy, of course
) and also my tv. I'm not getting tv service though...it's $200 a semester
. Hoora for megavideo.
-
My order confirmation came a couple of hours ago. Estimated ship date is July 7th or same as build date.
Just curious-do some people think there is some difference between the i3 and the i5 other than clock speed? Reading some of the posts I get that impression. I could't see spending $175 US to get a decent upgrade over the i3 myself as there is no difference other than the turbo boost.
Also wondering if anyone knows what brand of 500GB HDD usually ships in the HPs? My dm3z had a Seagate 320Gb. -
Just found a coupon code.... NBE725947
Additional $300 off customized HP Pavilion Notebook $1499+. limit 1350 uses
BOOOOOOOOOOO
(it doesn't work with the envy lol, i tried. Does work with the dv6tSE though, and makes it a sweet deal cuz it adds onto the $150 off already) -
you succeeded in scaring me
-
All I know is one way or another i'm GOING to find something to complain about and threaten to return the product so they will be FORCED to give me more money back!
>_< -
Does anyone have experience using BillMeLater via PayPal? It would honestly be easier for me, as when I get my overage check from my university's financial aid office, I could just pay off the rest of it then.
That way I can pay with what I have now, and pay the rest off in a couple months when I get the check. -
Please stop.
I dreamed last night I had found a $300 off Envy coupon. Only when I looked up coupons this morning did I realize it was a dream.
-
I've used it. Just pay it off before the end of the promotional period and you're golden. Works just like any other credit card.
-
So I understand you didnt order already but just inquired about an Envy 14? This gives me hope again, because we (ademmer and me, afaik) are promised E14s from a first shipment expected tomorrow, maybe your sales rep heard about a second shipment thats delayed..
But maybe thats wishful thinking on my side...^^
We know more tomorrow...
