hey . no wireless has not worked right since i got the computer. and when i go thru all the steps you laid out(thank you for doing so) when i get to the downloads folder at the end the file isnt there and when i look at the file and press properties it says its the set up file, so idk if i actually downloaded the drivers because it wont let me do anything because when i try to open it it says that it is installing them / please wait and then the box dissapears and nothing happens. so i went thru selecting the drivers on my own but they arent there in the download folder at the end.
i'm about ready to throw something thru my wall right now. i'm overtired and i cant get this stupid thing to work. -
in downloads folder.
ics_ds64
description says is the intel r proset wireless setup program. when i open it it says now performing intel... driver installer operations , please wait.. then it goes away. so idk if i can download them or if this is them. -
wow almost 1000 pages!

Are my synaptics touchpad drivers out of date? i tried to download new drivers from the website but it said mine were newer than the ones on the website. The reason I ask is because I don't see the options that JJB describes in his touchpad guide.
-
Try this; go to the control panel (show all panel items) > click 'recovery' > click 'trouble shoot a problem' (on upper left) > click 'connect to internet' > in popup window click 'advanced' and check box to 'apply repair automatically' > click 'next' > click trouble shoot internet connection (make sure you are not plugged in by ethernet to internet and that wifi is on) and follow prompts. Cross your fingers that win 7 can figure out the problem.....

I've tried searching to see if anyone else has this problem but nothing came up.
I have a problem with (I believe this is the problem) the high contrast mode. When i turn on my computer and it gets to the log in screen the background is a bright white color.
After i log in everything looks back to normal but when i open something up like fire fox instead of having the home page background, all I see is a search bar.
To fix this problem i have to push the shift + alt + prt sc, this turns on and off high contrast mode.
So my question is: Is there anyway to completely disable this worthless feature? I have went into the the easy access thing in the control panel and found the high contrast mode settings, but there is no way to turn it off. -
is there anyway you would be willing to go into a chat with me or something? idk if u r busy or not, i feel bad posting 25 posts about how i'm a retard and cant use a computer, and cluttering everything up.. i do feel that i have a legitimate problem but if this computer was infront of you or most ppl in this forum they could fix it in 5 minutes.

How do you confirm TRIM support? I googled the model number and found a few references:
Dell branded, Samsung MMDOE56G5MXP-0VB (PM800/PB22-J), 2.5" 256GB SSD for $395+tax ($479.99 - $15 - 15% bing cashback)

The wait is killing me. Order is in production. I can only hope there are no delays and it will ship next week... That's being optimistic, however.
-
Currently there are four counts of whine with SSD's.
MmmHmmmmm with unknown SSD,
S.M. with 256 GB samsung SSD,
Tee.Kay with the Intel 160 GB SSD,
And myself with the same.
In addition, its worthy to point out the gravity of the annoyance of the whine caused all four of us to RMA/return.
The new one I ordered has an SSD as well.
Maybe there is a correlation between SSD and whine. -
i have to say i am really disappointed in the switching of the graphics. most of the time it refuses to switch and i have to restart the laptop to get it to. such a waste of time.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I haven't really had those issues.
only problem I've had is the black desktop once -
lot of trouble to go through just to have your laptop boot up faster
-
You have to restart?
Or it ends the explorer process? (screen goes blank with just your background no windows up) -
I doubt there's a correlation... It's just a cpu problem.
-
i close all applications and goto configure graphics and keep hitting the other graphics card but nothing happens. a restart does the trick but its pretty annoying to have to restart so much.
-
Newest driver version is 15.0.17.4 It actually loads 3 different variations of the touchpad driver that has different setting options in each. To switch to another version go to device manager > mouse > synaptics > update driver > pick from list.... > double click on the 2nd 'synaptics PS/2' item listed , and it should load (may have to click 'next')..... restart and see if your settings options changed, there is no way to know which is which version, normally the one you are using is the top one so the next on down will be another verion (not always) it's a very screwy ID system....
-
Well, a solution for people who mess something up switching graphics and cause their computer to go blank with just their background, simply hit Control + Shift + Esc, then hit File-> New Task(Run...), text type explorer.exe and hit enter.
It would sometimes kill explorer.exe when I switched graphics XD -

My samsung 256 ssd came with old firmware that doesn't support trim. Samsung has a new firmware but you have to flash your ssd and loose all your data.
Here is the new firmware download

I love it. Touchpad:
In terms of first impressions, the Envy 14 seems to have gotten a better reception than the Envy 15 did though whether that's because the likes of Engadget never bothered to update the drivers is yet to be seen. -
Did you clean install? I cleaned installed and mine switches everytime or asks to close programs before it switches. Never seen it not switch or unable to after I close a program.
-
My favorite part:
The Envy 14 is the Hyundai Genesis of 2009/2010. Just as Apple tards often scream "But it's still a PC," German brand fanboys still bleated "But it's a Hyundai." Same d-bags are forced to watch daily as their incomes get drained from overpaying for their machines as the smarter consumers toss aside obsession with brand reputation and pay less for the same quality and refinement. Both the Genesis and the Envy constantly turn heads wherever their owners take them. Both are underrated but appreciated by those who've used them.
I'm lovin' it. -
From my understanding its a combination of the mobo/cpu and almost everything that communicates with the mobo. The voltage/power usage of our ssds could be causing the vibration, or it could all be a odd coincidence.
Also I had the Intel 160gb ssd. -
The high pitch noise( I can hear it over a lawn mower) is really annoying so I am sending it in to HP to get it fixed. Bummer only had if for a week, but when paying big bucks it should be nearly perfect, by the way I cant get my Bios to upgrade, it goes through the process when the computer starts back up and uses The HP Bios Updated screen and when it says it is going to restart it never restarts.

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
He also states he has perfect viewing angles. I would love for that to be true
PS: I do not expect to turn heads with this laptop like my Qosmio x300. HP laptops looked all the same to me before, and with prior experience with their products, I wasn't even considering HP to be an option until I happened to research the envy more.
People who don't know a lot about laptops (which is 99% of the public) will not turn their head for a second look. The envy is very low profile to me, and if you don't know a lot about it, it will just look like another HP laptop. -
It's not the driver version that is an issue, they have all been good with just minor improvements ech update. It's HP's failure to setup the synaptics 'settings' to a proper configuration to mak it a good user experience out of the box. You would think the idiots at HP (Berry Ferris) would scream bloody murder and change this immediately in the software they load at the factory, same with screen calibration, brightness control, HD webcam etc. etc.... This is where Apple excels at providing a great first impression out of the box and builds customer loyalty..... Just think of all the poor unkowing consumers who are getting the E 14 and have no idea about all the tweaks needed to improve things, they are living with it straight out of the box
-
Or they're just calling hp and complaining.
-
I find it funny that Apple computers fail quite regularly, like any computer (however I believe HP has the highest failure/defect rate of all manufacturers, and I have heard ASUS is the lowest).
See, the thing is, Apple has amazing customer support. Back when I owned an iPhone 3G, it died, and Apple took care of everything, had great and fast customer support over the phone, and replaced it with a brand new iPhone 3G. Note that I never bought anything like AppleCare. However, I sold the iPhone to offset the cost of buying my Nexus One, as I much prefer Android to iOS.
My point is, Apple's customer support is easy and transparent, and if your computer fails, they'll replace it. Admittedly they will sometimes charge you a large sum of money, I'm sure many PC manufacturers do it as well.
If PC manufacturers would launch their products with little to no bloatware, had proper configurations of devices out of the box, and had even decent customer support, it would give Apple a run for money.
PC still has the advantage of being cheap and powerful, which is very beneficial for power users (like most of us here).
Edit: I also have to note Apple is one of the few companies that are honest and do real-world tests with their battery life. The MacBook Pro 13 refresh apparently really does get 10 hours of light internet browsing. ASUS has been okay about this, but many companies (HP, and I'm looking at you, Barry Ferris) simply use synthetic benchmarks with WiFi off, etc. -
HP has a high failure/defect rate because they sell lots budget laptops, netbooks and etc. which are bound to fail. Also, some people, who aren't very computer savvy enjoy the bloatware and think it's a huge plus.
-
Lies. You're saying the Envy won't be a chick magnet and ora competent substitute for smooth pick-up lines!
-
Awaiting my Envy as well, currently in production. 2.0, when you close this thread, all content on pg 1 will transfer over correct?
-
I think an even better car analogy is a comparison to the Buick Lacrosse.
Buick has an even worse name than HP in the premium segment, and the Lacrosse costs less than the competition and provides more premium features and looks for the price.
Cars Plaza: First Drive: 2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS -
That doesn't change the fact that they have such an astronomically high defect/failure rate compared to other manufacturers. ASUS sells many budget laptops, but (if the information I read is true), they have the lowest defect/failure rate among (major) OEMs.
I'm mainly saying that PC companies seriously need to overhaul customer support. You are right though, I know some people that actually like the bloatware. -
i want to be the 10,000 post XD

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
U want a chick magnet? Get a mac. That is one thing they are good for
-
>.> i shall win
-
I'd also like to point out that HP has a pretty large share of the PC market which would contribute to the failure/defect rate. I do agree that their products aren't top notch and their rates still are pretty high though & ASUS products are pretty good quality (I own one myself).
EDIT: FIRST POST ON THE 1,000th page, do i get something? -
Did the people with the whine issue already try disabling processor idle states to see if it is possible to get rid of it?
There's some information online regarding other laptops with the whine (supposedly a fault of poor motherboard design?) and apparently it worked for them but there seems to be some undesirable consequences:
"Note that disabling the processor idle states on a system has severe negative energy efficiency and thermal consequences and should be done only in consultation with the system or processor vendor."
