I'm hoping to order today or sometime soon, but the more I think about it, the more I worry the Envy 14 will suffer from poor battery life, even on the iGPU. Just looking at similar configurations (Core i5 and Intel iGPU) with 59 watt hour batteries is making me nervous.

About the shipping dates, HP ships REALLY fast for their standard shipping. I ordered a monitor with my Envy on Monday, and it's expected arrival WAS July 1, but I checked it this morning, and it's out for delivery! That's really good news for the shipping of out computers.

Unfortunately our Envy 14s are coming from China. Not some warehouse in the US. So, if (like me) you selected standard shipping, its likely gonna take closer to the stated time.

God I hate it when being cheap comes back to bite me in the hiney! LOL

better to save $40 on shipping to have it 3-4 days faster and spend that toward an upgrade on the E14 which you'll have for however long.

Or put it towards a REALLY fine cigar to celebrate your Envy's arrival. :D

Personally, I don't find it worthwhile to spend $50+ to get my computer a couple days earlier. If it were a matter of arriving in time for my next return trip to China, it would be worth it, because getting it to me in China would take longer and be much more expensive than getting it a day or two before flying out, but since I expect it to arrive at least 3-4 weeks before I come back (though I haven't even returned to the States yet), I'm happy to save $50 and wait a few more days.

can we get some dimensions in the first post. I've been finding myself looking them up and comparing it to the 13/15" MBPs. 16:9 makes these suckers kind of wide. But looking at the numbers, it's not too bad for size. All thickness is near 1".

    Envy 14: 9.3 x 14 x 1.1 inches ; 5.2 pounds
    15" MBP: 9.82 x 14.35 inches ; 5.6 pounds
    13" MBP: 8.94 x 12.78 inches ; 4.5 pounds
    and cuz I have one, M11x: 11.25” x 9.19” x 1.29 ; 4.4 pounds

trying to convince myself 14.5" isn't bad... but I do just love 13.3" or smaller.

    14" 4820TG: 9.64 x 13.46 x 0.94-1.13 ; 4.65 pounds

P.S. It doesn't have a backlit keyboard, whoever asked me that. The 4820TG is very similar to the Asus UL models.

Do you guys know of any good current or upcoming laptops that might be in the pipeline? I am especially interested in ones from asus, or anything 13" to 15.x" with an NVIDIA gpu that is on par with the ati 5650, such as a GTS 250M, GTS 350M, or the upcoming fermi GF104 cards. I want decent battery life if I can get it, at least 4.5 hours of web surfing and ms office. I would consider other ati based laptops if you think they are worth a mention, not interested in a timeline or vaioZ or macbook. thanks.

It depends on what you're looking for. Looking at reviews on notebookcheck.com, it seems that i5 laptops with well-optimized power saving modes will draw about 10-12 watts while under minimal load (text editing, etc.). So that could mean 5 or 6 hours of life. HP actually seems to do pretty well with power optimization on their premium models, see for example what this EliteBook does with a 55 watt-hour battery.

What I do wonder about with the Envy 14 is not so much the i5, but rather how the high-resolution Radiance display will impact the battery life compared with models that have otherwise similar specs.

I also just recieved my Dicota Messenger Bag, one day after my original shipping date for my Envy 14...
Very good deal at 13€ from Cyberport with shipping and all.. It seems to be good quality, provides good protection and has plenty space for cables, power adapters and some paper..
It just looks very sad, all empty and alone!

    Come on, HP!

BTW, 2.0, can you link to these pictures on the first page? Its advertising pr0n, but for all those waiting it might help..

I tried to be helpful and wrote tons of faq related information in my first several posts to the forum, but some of it was too subjective to be included in the faq, so 2.0 didn't want to link it. I have a complete list there of accesories, with part#'s and wattages for the batteries, the I/O layout, details on how computrace lojack works, a discussion of warranty service v.s. private insurance showing the pro's and con's, and also a list of rumors some of them I managed to clear up with HP envy technicians. It sucks for all that information to get buried, but anyone who needs to know something not in the FAQ you can look up my first posts under my profile.

P.S. can i get bcb after stacking 2 coupons onto my student discount? XD

This is also some incorrect and/or misleading information in there that's also why I didn't link it. additionally, I'm not going to link accessories as that makes it appear as a recommendation. Can't in good conscious recommend some of those accessories as there are better reviewed third party ones available.

The good news is that some of the info is correct and objective but is also redundant. So the opening post echoes some of what you were hoping to have included.

Sieht sehr Europäisch aus. Was für ein glück das Sie Europäischer sind...

I don't know if an American could pull that bag off. Any better than I can pull off communicating in German anymore - blast the slow drain of disuse!

Personally, I've got the 14.5" Link Pattern sleeve coming - at around $25 with the student- + notebook purchase- + instant rebate- discounts, I figured it was worth checking out. I'm not sure how much use it'll get since I ride my bike everywhere, and I generally need more space (i.e. my messenger bag) when I go to work or travel, but I'd like to give the sleeve concept a go anyway.

Good question, I had really bad luck with my first ATI GPU. The drivers, especially for openGL applications, were really bad. For instance when quake4 came out there was a driver problem that caused a lot of ATI cards to render everything totally green as if it was nightvision mode and it would have been a simple driver update to fix the problem, but ATI just decided to heck with it we just will announce we won't be giving anyone any further updates because most of the affected cards are 2 to 3 yrs old, problem solved. Also when used in a drafting program, certain screen elements would disappear, flakey drivers all around, not just in games, and you had to spend half the day going through your collection of old versions of the drivers just to find one that works with certain programs. -- I have never had a bad experience like that with NVIDIA, the drivers are always very stable and useable, and sometimes even have extras like support for stereoscopic 3d. NVIDA also keeps pushing out drivers for the older cards too to fix problems, unlike ATI who just dumps you after a certain date, or at least that is how they used to do things.

450m is 'bout the same as the 520m (520m may not be worth the $100 upgrade).

370m is a 450m without turbo boost and a slightly weaker integrated card (667mhz compared to 766mhz) and may or may not be worth the $75 upgrade depending on your budget.

Processor apparently CAN be swapped out but they are underneath the vid card or something weird like that (someone got the envy engineers on the line when they were talking to HP)

I'll have to agree with you on that. nvidia driver support is great and with laptopvideo2go even better. I had an ATI 3670 before and that was like a year ago and it was all one single driver, which I guess was easy but I dunno, always slow to update.

Looks like a pretty sweet product - SF turns out some pretty nice stuff from time to time, especially of the eco-friendly variety. I didn't see any 14.5" laptops listed in the HP section, either the Envy or DV5x series, but if you email them with the Envy's dimensions they should be able to fit you. Just make sure that you send the correct dimensions for your battery situation - i.e. slice or no-slice, since that will probably impact the size you want to get.

He ordered an external monitor along with his Envy, that's the shipping he's referring to.

To be fair, that's coming from a warehouse in the States, not from a factory in China. Speaking of which, I wonder where they assemble the Envy line. I live a couple clicks away from a Foxconn plant, but I believe they do more Mac stuff, along with their own name-brand parts...

EDIT: scratch that, they have the same clock speed. Now I'm confused, haha...

    Hey guys and gals :)
Im in the process of currently looking for a new laptop and the Envy 14 popped up in conversation. Sorry if these have been asked before but

    1) When will it be available in the UK and how readily available will it be? I realise it's not even out in the US yet so I can only imagine we're talking months rather than weeks

    2) How much is it going to cost?

    3) I've been on the UK HP website and had a look around, found some snippets of info but could only find an Envy14 with 1366 x 768 resolution, are there any that are planned to have an i5 and a slightly higher resolution? Maybe 1600 x 900 or something?

Cheers everyone, i'll be keeping my eye firmly focused on the forums for now on!

I found an absolutely beautiful McKlein bag in a really nice Chestnut colored leather at the Macy's near my home for $85. It was a steal at that, and I think its gonna be perfect for my Envy, based on the published measurements.
