    ok guys i gotta question.
do you think if i went on the phone and talked to the right ppl and was willing to spend whatever extra cost that it takes that HP would be able to outfit my envy 14 with an hd5830 from the envy 15? theyre the same size card (obv theyre both pcie) and im getting an i5 to save power for graphics switching so i dont mind the extra power used but that upgrade would really make the envy 14 completely perfect in every regard. then it would have the graphical power to match the rest of its specs instead of the midrange 5650 youd get the lower high end 5830. id buy the laptop in a heartbeat if theyd do that for me. id be willing to pay up and extra couple hundred dollars as well.

    and also,
does anyone here know what brand the 256gb ssd is? i know the 160gb is intel x25m g2 but what is the 256?

    thanks in advance

if anybody was going to order the momentus xt hybrid drive, now would be a good time because newegg has a coupon for 10% of hard drives right now, and they give you a free $20 hard drive enclosure. i ordered it yesterday and the coupon just came available today so i didn't get to use it. But i did the live chat thing on newegg and asked if i could get some money for the coupon and they said no because i ordered when the coupon was not available, but if you say then can i cancel my order and reorder it with the coupon they will just give you the $13 discount refunded to your Card.

heres the link Newegg.com Category-wide Coupon: Up to 25% off Hard Drive, HDTVs, Keyboards, Motherboards, Speakers, Digital Camera, etc. - LogicBUY

Hope this saves somebody some money

BTW the coupons a one day only coupon, came out today and expires today

Well I ordered it, I'll pop open the cover and let you guys know as soon as I get it (unless someone else gets to it first).

Sorry, the 5830 is not compatible with the Envy 14, the GPUs are both soldered on the system boards.

ok so i called hp and jonnobts is right i was told the 5650 is soldered on to the board and there would be no way to replace it, even if i were to do it manually.
so that rules that out sadly.
i was also told that the 256gb ssd model could not be told to me as they outsource to different companies and it could end up being anything from intel to ocz so thats not too comforting.

i really wish theyd update the envy 15 with the battery, core i5 options, backlit keyboard, and dvd drive of the envy 14.
that with the 5830 would be a purchase id make right now.
now im gonna have to think about this whole envy 14 thing again and still am considering the vaio z. (even though the 330m isnt that great, i know.) ugh.

lol that would be SICK if the 256gb one was an intel, because intel doesn't even make any bigger than 160gb! hahaha

Yea, an update to the envy 15 to make it just like the 14 but bigger and with a better gpu would make me buy it. I was seriously considering the 15 before i saw the envy 14 a couple months ago

    Build Date July 13th :)( )

It was a pain in the to get it ordered though... Apparentyly my bank has my old address from forever ago, so when my address I put in on the order page didnt match, it took my money, but the order didnt go through. I had to call HP and have a supervisor call my bank, then she put us on a 3 way call so I can get my money back. So after that, I had to reorder again (using my old address). It was a hassle, but at least its all working now =]

So the build date is when its done being built and ready to ship, right?

i honestly dont get it guys, i am willing to spend however much money it takes.
i want a solidly built, full metal (aluminum/magnesium/whatever light metal) case with a core i5 for graphics switching and low power consumption, powerful discreet graphics like an hd 5800 series or geforce 160m in a nice 1" thick 13-15 inch laptop. throw in an ssd and like 4gb of ram (honestly thats plenty) and i will BUY IT. cmon laptop manufacturers gimme somethin here. not even the great overpriced apple can give me a fast enough video card. and the highest of high end of all companies cannot fulfill my requirements, the envy 15 was oh so close, if they had threw in the 5830 it wouldve won me over but they just had to skimp on options. thats all it had to be, an OPTION, for people like me that wouldve paid for it.

if anyone knows a laptop like the one described above, regardless of price, please let me know. im just a college computer savvy kid who wants a stylish gaming laptop, is that so much to ask for?

Pitchblak, if the cost doesn't matter, get an external slot and put in what ever graphics card your heart desires. However the external pci E's run you down about ~400-800,

Magma - PCI & PCI Express Expansion Solutions

For info, but those are expensive ones.

Also ~WARN~ I don't really know how well these work. And they that one the main component will cost like $800. So, definitely research, research, research

The video circuitry is soldered to the motherboard. It is not a "card" as it is not MXM.

So to sum up, it's not remotely a possibility.

yea i was thinkin bout keepin one of those external pci-e cards at my desk for when im not out and about and i can get some good gaming in but it was a mediocre solution at best. thanks for the suggestion though man. i probably will just end up with the envy 14 cause its so close but its all just a little disappointing.

and i knew it didnt exist magus but people can be optimistic right? haha

and if one of you guys who gets your envy 14 can post a good detailed review up on here or youtube with pics or video that'd be awesome. id think all of us potential buyers will really appreciate it since pro reviews don't look like they'll be up for a while. lol

I wish it existed as much as you do. Maybe nivdia can get optimus working with all their cards (that'd be nice...woulda made me wait on the asus G53 but well. Stuff to look forwards to next 3 or 4 years down the road)

Don't forget, $315 is an UPGRADE from regular HDD to SSD. If you sell your SSD, you'll have to buy a regular HDD to put it back into your laptop, and that cost $60 to $100 depending on capacity. But if you have a 2.5 HDD laying around, then that is a different case.

Having said that, I think most people won't go back to regular HDD once they've seen the "dark side" :D

    Let's talk about heating

How unreal was the the Envy 15's issues?

I have an Asus N50vn (IIRC) and it got prettty hot to the touch of the hand rest even, I wonder if I'll even notice a heating issue.

Currently, the only thing that will cause me to return will be a heating issue.

Still haven't ordered, waiting for wired money to come through today/tomorrow/monday

well they added in another vent (rear) and put the left vent on the right instead.

they also have those intake vents on the bottom that the slice apparently lines up with so that they don't get blocked.

it'll just depend on where the parts are inside the computer, that'll be where it'll get hot.

also hot is relative. I'm fine with my G1 getting like 55-59 degrees celsius at the hdd (and that cover is paint and metal..and the paint's going away). That's the only spot that gets really hot for me when I use it.

the other hot spot is the top right but on top (it's where the gpu is, right below the/to the left of the LED clock)

I don't see why you care so much about hd 58xx cards, 5870 reaches 9500 but their orverclock margin in such a laptop will be 0.

While 5650 can be easily overclocked up to 7000/8000'ish scores in 3dmark.

I seriously don't get you man.

I did it for the dm4t. It worked very well and was very fast. Costco has a great return policy also. I am probably going to return the dm4 and get the envy. There was a little piece of plastic stuck into the frame around the screen that won't come out. Other than that, it's a great computer and the process through costco was fine.

When I configured the exact same system I ordered from HP Direct, but on the Costco site, it came out more expensive. My HP purchase was $1,189.99 (Before $50 coupon. $1,139.99 after coupon), and the Costco total was $1,207.99. Granted its not a lot of money, only $18.00 but still. I wonder why? Would the fact that I ordered my around 5:00am on the 27th be a factor? Have any of the costs changed, as far as anyone knows?

Nah. I'd pay for an Envy 15 WITHOUT the optical drive. More space for that dual-fan cooling system. I'm wary of heating issues on the Envy 14 BECAUSE of the slot-load drive that it now packs.

Yes 2.0 must be right, the other day though when I had asked HP about if the CPU was socketed I was told by a tech that the envy14 had the GPU on a seperate card. I asked if they could please email me the service manual, because it isn't online yet, but they wouldn't.

Now that I look for myself very closely in the envy 17 service manual I can see GPU is on the mainboard in that laptop. I had looked at this manual before to try and verify what they told me might be true, but wasn't paying attention, and I mistook the mainboard in the diagram to be a daughterboard for the GPU. Oops, the tech might have done this same exact thing.

So sorry for any confusion I may have caused by saying it was on a separate card, I hope the rest of the info that HP gave me is correct.

Your first mistake is using 3dmark06.

Regardless, you shouldn't need benchmarks to know that the mobile 5650 and 5830 are in completely different classes.

Most laptops of this size are using an nvidia 310M or 330M, why are you bashing the 5650? Its the most powerful card available in a 14" laptop right now, the 14" acer timeline uses it, so does the 14" lenovo Y series I think.

I'm really interested in this laptop. Once someone gets it I would love to see how the FFXIV benchmark runs on it cause that's the game I'll mostly be playing.

anyone here ever used fatwallet? they have a 5% cashback deal on HP right now, would that stack with the 10% academic? I know you cant stack the bing with it, but this is from fatwallet so maybe you can?

Yeah using the most used benchmark and only one with data available for comparison of both is a mistake.
When it comes to laptop graphic cards the class gap between higher 56xx and lower 58xx is negligible, the price however is not.
You may think without a bench that 58xx have twice as powerfull like the good old 9600m vs 9800m cases but in the case of the radeon 5xxx gen it is not..

Seriously. I will never understand whiners.

Still in disbelief over some of the demands people are expressing over the Toshiba R705. Even with an optical drive, that baby's 1" thick and 3.2 pounds. A thin and light 13.3" notebook WITH an optical drive, all for $800 at Bestbuy.com. Amazing enough, right?

    WRONG.

Some people were still whining and complaining that it doesn't come with a 335M GPU. When I replied that they could always spend extra and just get the Sony Z, all I got were responses and rambles that didn't bear on anywhere close to coherent.

335m would be nice for CUDA lol but either GPU option is good for me. Not too familiar with ATi's driver support though. Only had one laptop with an ATI and drivers were kind of.. meh

Right but for $800 you would think it would at least come with some form of dedicated GPU, like an HD 5870...

But seriously a GT 210m or some other dedicated card would be nice considering you can get an Asus G73 with 17" 1600x900 screen, 6GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD, and HD 5870 for $1200.

Either way, I'm surprised more manufacturers don't offer higher resolution screens. That woud make Acer a contender for me.

They've come up a bit on driver support. They are releasing drivers about 3 times a year, give or take. Nothing quite like Nvidia though. AT least you can mod the Nvidia drivers.

Driver support from Nvidia and ATI have both been so-so at best in my experiences.

well assuming you can get the catalyst 10.6 to install, those are pretty good it seems.

    10.5s....not so much.

10.6 does screw up older crossfires but this thing isn't a crossfire.

I agree. I really don't like whiners in this forum. It almost makes them sound like spoiled kids who are never happy with what they have.

I'm quite happy with the HD 5650 on my Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG. It should be plenty fast for most games.

ATI's switchable graphics is kind of different from NVIDIA Optimus. The screen blacks out for a few seconds to switch between graphics. However, the positive thing is that it fully disables the other graphics core.
