waste of money if you ask me. that boost of 200mhz is useless.
-
I've refreshed several times and I don't see this...
-
Its there. I'm logged in under my student account so I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but the 430m is gone and the 450m is $50 upgrade now down from $75.
Edit: Also the 520m is a $150 upgrade now instead of $175... -
Envy14 is a unibody aluminum build where as Asus has plastic. And looks depends upon person to person, I like the looks of Envy than N82.
Do not expect Asus will set the price at $900 for i3/i5. From i5-430M to i5-520M the upgrade price will be $275 USD !!!!
We can be confirmed once they ACTUALLY release the laptop, because various Asus models which were already released in their world magazine are not out yet
-
Ahh, a free price cut. Now if they could release a coupon to commemorate the holiday weekend. Dang you, HP, why do you hate freedom?
-
how soon do you need yours?
I'm prepared and able to wait until early September. (don't want to wait that long though) -
People have been asking about temperatures.. The handrest never went above warm.. But I havent really stressed the machine..
Right now I am running Cinebench for 5 min, still no major heating up yet.
I will post results in a bit...
CINEBENCH R10
****************************************************
Tester : Jonathan Meyer

After a few runs of Cinebench exhaust still doesnt feel hot, warm, yet but nothing as reported by the Envy 17 owners... -
I don't see the change in prices either, but yesterday I did write a letter to someone high up at HP and told him how many people are disappointed or upset with the selection of CPUs and the prices, especially because the base spec was downgraded while the price was increased! Wouldn't that be something if they took notice and are going to try and rectify the situation...
The envy14 needs options like i5 580M, i7 620M, i7 640M.
The ridiculous $200 slice battery, is twice as much as the envy15 slice.
They need to get their act together with the amazon.com listing.
Does anyone else have some more gripes? -
Don't really need it as I can lug around my 8lb+ notebook to school...not sure how comfy that will be alongside my books.
Still willing to wait though. -
Bedtime. Cya guys in about 8 hrs.
-
anyone think lack of usb 3.0 will be a major buzzkill down the line? Usb 3.0 will probably be pretty standard by next year right? and then well have to settle for outdated usb 2.0 on the envy 14 for the next 4 years (or however long until you get a new laptop)
-
Does anyone know FOR SURE what kind of SSD the 160GB and the 256GB SSDs are?
-
I think if USB 3.0 is a make or break spec, you're being far too picky (unless of course you do something that really requires the faster speeds such as video copying, etc.) Sure its nice but it doesn't do anything new, just does something faster that we've had for years.
Like was posted a few pages back you can snag that ASUS with USB 3.0, but you're missing out on the Radiance display, backlit keyboard, superior build quality, etc.
Do I think it's an oversight by HP? Yes, absolutely. Considering I store all my movies on an external USB that doesn't have esata, this one missing aspect annoys me. But I'll take the beauty, power and quality of the E14 over anything on the market right now with USB 3.0. If anything it may tell us that it may not be the greatest time to purchase a very expensive laptop since in a year it should become the standard, so it annoys me that it's not included. My guess is R2 of this laptop will include USB 3.0 and some better CPU options, but that'll be a ways away. -
Wow, thanks for the update. But if the temps are getting up to the 50-70C range and the exhaust does not feel warm, then there should be something wrong right?
Since the whole point of the cooling system is to dump the heat from inside the system into the outside room. -
I meant its quite warm, but not hot as in its painful to touch.. My point of comparison was the reported heat on the ENvy 17.
It does seem to do its job..
After some more heavy work the right handrest gets a litle bit warm, maybe not extremely comfortable on a hot day, but the left hand you need for gaming stays comfortably cool.. -
Could you tell us the pros and cons on the laptop and give it an overall grade??
Erathostenes thank you for all your contributions!! -
Hey erathostenes, have you got any more battery life observations yet?
I am especially curious to know how long you can go for just web surfing or office tasks, both with and without the ati 5650 enabled, because if I buy a quad core it won't have the integrated GPU and it will be good to know how much difference there really is with that feature. -
haha, thanks for clarifying that. I haven't read anything about the envy 17's cooling so I read what you wrote as the exhaust not being hot or warm, lol.
-
4820TG is available in the US, and there is a CW with 330m GPU. Plus 5.3 lbs vs 5.1 lbs is a bit on the heavy side?
-
Just to make things clear, I am not trying to push the n82, im just saying that it is out there. I really want to get the envy14, just waiting for some sort of deal.
The n82jv specs can be found here for anyone that's interested: http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=Oj7bkcUi5KMCSylx
And there is a waiting thread here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/456772-official-waiting-n82jv-thread.html
And a detailed review here: Notebookcheck: Review Asus N82JV Notebook
It has Optimus, but not with the quad core series of course. Does have a backlit keyboard. Battery life is alright: 3.75 hours on moderate use, 6.5 hours on max power saving settings with BatteryEater's Reader's test (63 WH - 6 cell?).
So bottom line, the envy14 has better build quality (metal vs plastic), ~10% better graphics card + dx11 support vs only dx 10.1 on the geforce 335m, insanely much better screen, does not have usb3.0, is actually out (n82 only has the n82jq-a1 i7 core options on preorder), a bit heavier by +0.2lbs, not sure about battery life (n82 should offer 6 and 8 cell options) the n82 should be better, and yes, the price is unknown (n82jq-a1 $1,159.00 base vs envy $1,349.99 base + i7-720QM)
Argh, so many notebooks out there. I was also about get the asus n61jv (15.6" version of the n82jv) off amazon for $900 before I saw the previous envy14 thread here. Or maybe save money and get something in the hp dv series or asus ul series. I don't need to play games! just want to. -
160GB is Intel, but no confirmation of 256GB
-
Several of these "alternate" laptops look great, but I don't understand why none of them offer an option to upgrade the screen. 1366x768 is way too small resolution IMHO for regular desktop work. Just offer the screen as a $150 option and that opens up a few more possibilities other than the Envy 14.
-
Where do you get 15 watt draw from? Just curious.
-
I'm getting an E14 from Singapore with this spec "i5-520M, 4GB DDR3 1 Dim, 900p screen, 8 cells battery" for 1700$, kind of overpriced compared to U.S
-
waittt if they changed the upgrade price form 70 to 50 from i3 to i5, I want my money back
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Call them and they will give it to you. Plenty of people who ordered the dm4t and paid for the upgrades to 4GB of RAM and the 500GB called and got an $80 credit when those upgrades became free.
-
I knew my letter to HP would accomplish something, looks like they are lowering the prices now
-
Abaddon did you order envy 14? How's your dm4t? Youndidnt like it or something? What alternative to envy 14 do you recommend dm4t or dv6tse June model?
-
I'm going to call and get my $22 refund! Thanks for the heads up.
actually, with tax it's $24.24. How cool XD -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
I didn't order an Envy and I returned my dm4t because I wanted something with more graphics power, there was nothing wrong with it. If you don't have the money for the Envy 14 then the dv6:SE is a great alternative but it is slightly bigger and has a worse screen, not bad though, and the dm4t is slightly smaller but also weaker. -
The 430M was removed because it was a $25 upgrade and slower than the i3 370M they were already offering as the base, it was a ripoff. You guys should be calling or writing in to complain about the pricing so they will keep adjusting it, its still $200 for the slice battery.
To address the price complaints it looks like they just knocked $25 off the cost of all CPU upgrades across the board. I don't think this goes far enough, really they should be offering that 450M as the base configuration, and also have a even better selection of dual cores as upgrades. The i5 540M and i7 620M, and if possible other ones like 640M, 560M, and 580M. -
hello...new to this site...been reading this thread alot cuz im plannin to buy this for college...but does anyone know if this is in retail stores yet?...i want to see it before i order
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah I'm gonna call and get my $25 back
-
Knarun it will be a while prob a month till it hits Bestbuy but your vest way to customize is online in stores you have premade models
-
i dont understand why they cant go and label the battery options correctly. is it really that hard?
-
Late Q3 release. Not out yet. I5-580M looks great.
Bronsky
-
Wow those temps are beautiful!
-
arite thanks micgoogle...and does anyone know if the 160gb ssd has stuff like wear-leveling, overprovisioning, and TRIM?..if it is a intel..can someone post a link to its specs...thanks
-
Correlation=/=causation, friend.
-
Come on, people, let's keep it realistic. I'd like an i5-580M myself, but this ain't 2050! We don't have time machines! -
Sure, Intel 160GB SSD.
-
DEF AGREED!

orangecounty_ccie Notebook Enthusiast
Has anyone been able to verify that the CPU is soldered in or not? I might pick up an e14 with a lower end cpu with the idea of swapping it out later. I have read on this thread people claiming both sides. The HP sales reps are worthless.
-
Thanks htwingnut
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
not verified. no one's wanted to remove the heatsinks and stuff to see what it looks like underneath (don't think they want to void their warranty)
-
I just got my $24.24 refund with tax included. Easy, quick phone call. I've now gotten $114.25 refunded. (The first $90 was for their overpriced windows 7 Prof, which I told them I could have gotten for $29.99 from microsoft). I wonder how much more I'll be able to get from them.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I passed on win 7 pro since it was overpriced. Maybe I shouldn't have.
Oh well, the one thing I need from it (xp mode) can work on home premium. If you're up to doing a few things and have a legit xp cd key. -
You always have the not-so-legal means. -
^ I got HPA discount, so I also qualify for the windows academic discount. I needed it for the VPN settings.
If you qualify for the academic discount, it's $29.99 from microsoft, which I would have just gotten if they hadn't been nice and given me a price break. But then, if you can do it on Home Premium, I guess there's really no need to upgrade. -
