Stopped reading around page 290ish.
less than 4 hours of battery life...
I will NOT be buying this machine, if you're happy with <4 hours battery life thats fine, I on the other hand, am not.
I guess It's back to playing the waiting game for me. -
Haha you all are so funny about the battery life... I'm upgrading to my Envy from a 2005 Dell Inspiron 600m, so my perspective's quite a bit different than someone who might be used to newer hardware. Hell, if this thing gets more than 30 minutes on a charge, I'll be happy
-
what are the chances a coupon or any sort of bing cashback discount will be released tomorrow?
-
Does anyone know if I could pick it up in a store in the US a week from now? The only upgrade I need is the i3 to an i5.

Dude, every high end laptop with superiour quality CPUs and GPUs, will have crappy battery life, (and dont you argue the Vaio Z, it has a much smaller dimmer screen and junk GPU). If you wont be plugging in every 4hrs with this laptop, you need a more mobility centered laptop, maybe with a ULV proc. or a less monstrous GPU. -
Repped for goodness. *Izza correct grammar?*
-
when i read your post, i imagined myself doing the same: the waiting game again. i felt this emptiness inside that scared me. i'd rather just buy an envy 14 and find outlets every once in a while for a bit.

....there's always the sliiiiiice

Or,..... You could just get the envy14 and put a 18w CPU in. The Intel website for the HM55 states support for it. I but you would get much better battery life with a CPU with half the wattage of the standard one. -
In don't like THICK crust!
-
Why would you ever need 4+ hours? A lecture is at most 3hours. If you have 3classes which require notebook-note-taking, then you're a madwo(man). I had classmates who brought 6-outlet powerstrips to share with us every classday, lolz, so you might wanna try the same.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
Yeah yeah.
Slice is kinda hefty. -
Happy 4th everyone! To our foreign friends, Cheers!
-

Ahhh the joy of college. Though my classes later on they were stepping it up by having plugs built into the lecture hall desks -
look on the bright side guys! HP envy14= the most awesome 4 hour battery laptop out there!
-
Slice is a little too thick, plus for the price and battery life, I would much rather get another 8 cell. cheaper and longer battery life.
I say I don't want it because the battery, but then I keep looking at all it has to offer and I want it, haha. -
My Shortest class is 4 hours
My longest class is 4.5 hours
Good thing they don't run back to back and I'm at work before hand, so I could charge my laptop there -

Gotta love the 21st century. Toured my uni, and they have direct lan connection, and power right in front of you. ^.^ Im jumping for joy! -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
we don't have direct lan.
now every room did get wireless internet by the time I was in my third year. -
Ok, so I do love deep dish... one of our German friends had what I presume to be a beer cap in one of the photos of his new Envy 14.
What are you drinking good sir?
-
july 4th coupons where are you??
-
I saw the beer cap in the photos as well. It's in the photos where he is showing the light coming off the screen.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
at the moment? bit of water.
do have some nice champagne for the 4th tomorrow (my dad only drinks champagne if he drinks and well that's a rare occasion. Mainly just new years and the 4th) -
i think i'd rather have an extra regular batter instead of the slice too. what are the chances the up the power on the slice with time?
-

Im antsy to see if i get money back... should I have waited???? -
Deutschland uber alles!
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
man Germany opened it up on 'em in the second half
-
don't worry, you can just call and get the money which you would have saved ....according to many posters. HP has some kind of price matching policy, so don't sweat it. they won't give you cash though; i think it goes to your credit card.
-
Those were nice lights.... Who's going to tell us if they are adjustable or not? Using back-light keyboard during the day shouldnt take too much power right?
I wonder who will be the first Envy 14 user to totally optimize the computer for maximum battery life... and I wonder what that list of settings looks like. erathostenes & StefanHT: 2.0 might send some brew to first one who can do this and tell us what that battery can actually do. -
i wonder if they used the best battery they could, and if you ran it at minimum brightness with discreet gpu off and an ssd i bet you could get some pretty damn good battery life out of it.
and jesus christ guys macbook pros do not get 8 hours of battery life lol
they do get a good 6 hours though so thats still quite impressive.
they also are running osx, and gt330ms which are crap, as well the new i5/i7 generation running quite hot and has less ports too power -
KLOSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
he needs a couple more goals
-
so just ordered the 14, using a canadian credit card....we'll see if this works. It submitted alright, normally if it's rejected due to Canadian'ness I'm stopped immediately
*crosses fingers*
ordered the base model, btw -
Yeah, we're all itching to see how close HP Envy's Barry Farris' boastful claims of 7 hours battery life on the Envy 14 actually comes.... althought MBP's do indeed get 3-8 hours of battery life. We'll see that comparison soon enough!

I think read here that the Envy 15 would down-clock the CPU to 1.2ghz on battery mode. Will the Envy 14 do the same?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
Envy 15 clocked down to 1.2ghz on battery (and was forced to that) because it was using a Lithium Polymer battery as it's only power source.
and that thing couldn't handle a higher speed. -
Only calculated for these types!
-
Grrr. Battery life. I usually subtract 25-30% off advertised battery life, because that is the usual realistic life time. This is more like 40-45% off. I know they can pack higher density cells in the same package space, so hopefully there will be a higher capacity battery in the future for 5 hours+ of real use.
-
so... on our march to making this a 1000 page thread.. lets' talking about..
umm guys do you think they'll bring back BCB? I mean we all know its "stuck" at 5% but rumors state the fact that they still can change their minds.. to 25% at the last 72 hours of BCB, its Bing Crazy Cash Back i think.. so umm yea i'm planning on waiting till end of july to order when the comfortable reviews have shown whether that $@$#@$ $200 slice is worth it..
*hopes 10 page will be spent on this* -
Really? The first comment I made which you replied to is right here for your reading pleasure, unless you want to claim you were trying to reply to someone else.:
Moving on from there:
Fair enough, so you want peace of mind. However...
Wrong. That's a straw man right there. It's not the case that we're "tossing our money around" just because we know we can return things. You're drawing an ill-fitting analogy to an ill-fitting scenario. I don't buy and return items on whim just to play with them because yes, I agree at some point, it's a waste of time unless I'm going to keep it permanently or at least somehow gain from using it during the no hassle return period. Even so, an HP laptop isn't just toy we're buying and returning just for giggles. It's a necessity for many of us. -
Anyone have any experience with the slice battery (perhaps on an Envy 13 / 15 / 17)? Does the computer need to be turned off before connecting or disconnecting the slice?
If it can be connected and removed dynamically (without shutting off), I'll buy that. Otherwise I'd might as well just grab another internal 8 cell. -
nvm........wrong post
-
Well do it right! I had enough water today... 120 foot slip n slide in the park!
-
For the record, I'm buying for giggles.
-
First, Ive read all (read:almost all) 300 pages and I want to thank you guys for the great info.
I'm wondering when I'll know who makes the 256gb SSD and if it will be made by the same company for each unit? -
I believe Toshiba makes them..
It might be different for each one..
Samsung is another parner of hp's ssds they might be doing it too
Below are the relative SSd speeds of both
Your read is arnd: 250mb
Write arnd: 180mb
If you want the fastest ssd for $50 extra from newegg get OCZ Vertex 2 240GB
On that read: 280mb
Write: 275 mb -
just get this
Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE240G 2.5" 240GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
its a difference of 50 dollars and youre getting the fastest 200+ gig ssd on the market
at least thats what im doing
edit: props to the dude on this forum for originally posting that link =D -
Hahah pitch-black that was me!!!
I originally posted the link to it -
Well I'll be on vacation until the 11th, so hopefully my Envy will ship on the 7th and get here on the 12th!
