Not possible. The integrated graphics in built into the i5. The i7 does not have integrated graphics, thus switchable is not possible.

MY WHOLE LIFE HAS BEEN A LIE
EDIT2: I figured out where I got that from: -
Been reading since page 1 and for some reason it took me until now to sign up.
Ordered:
i5-450m, 4gb 1 dimm, 500gb hdd but have 500gb momentus xt waiting, and $1 norton and with student discount it came out to around $1,233 so saved about $150 with student discount. Bing emailed be about my 5% that came out to $57. Then I noticed the drop in the price of the 450m so called in about it and at the same time I was regretting not getting the slice and was hoping they could sell one separate from the unit so it wasn't going to happen. For the inconvenience they offered me $100 credit plus $25 for the processor. So total I saved around $320 and totaled around $1,000ish.
Can't wait for my July 8 ship date.
And a bit late but regarding the beats audio, I don't believe they are suppose to be the top of the line sounding from the actual speakers but from all the youtube videos they state that it gives supreme sound when you plug in external speakers or plug in headphones, that is when the beats excels. So I'm excited to listen to my M-Audio Studiophile AV-40 on my beats equipped envy 14.
Thanks to all the germans that have been extremely patient and informative.
Cheers -
no matte screen option?
no thanks -
They are using a different motherboard for i7 quadcores, so no, you cannot crossgrade the CPU at all no matter what. I wrote about this in the past you can look it up for more details.
-
Shame, I thought the black thing on the motherboard is the gpu and I figured if they're the same socket, it would work. Guess not.
-
Wait what happened when you called and wanted a slice?
-
To all you guys talking about BEATS, I thought the ENVY 15 had a pretty noisy output. I tried using it with some high quality headphones (AKG K701), and there was a loud hiss (worse than previous laptops I've had) whenever I was using it for anything. The whole BEATS thing is just a bunch of marketing. (especially the headphones, which are probably 300% overpriced for the sound quality)
-
How long does it take for the laptop to come when ordering from the ebay lady?
-
The lady was extremely nice and helpful, I've got to say I was much happier with them then my previous Lenovo customer service and I never took my mac to the "genius bar" c'mon, really.
Getting back to your question, I said there is the regular 8cell and an additional 6 cell slice and she noted that she did see it on the product page but it was not available as a separate accessory. I'm not sure if she was well informed or if I led her to the slice term by first using it, not sure. But I still do want the slice and now that they gave me the $100 credit it makes me want to get it even more as I would have purchased it at the price I find to be fair which is $100. -
So I went to Fry's to check out the Envy 17, mostly for the build quality, design, etc. I was quite surprised, it's one solid piece, and it was really cool temperature wise as well. I'm not too experienced in laptops, but this seemed like a reasonable temp.
Oh, and I asked the Fry's employee if he had the 14 in stock (I know he didn't, just wanted to see if they had any coming or the like). He comes back about 5 minutes later and offers the 13" and then the 15". I ask him what about the 14", and he says they don't carry the older models and we can ask for it on "special delivery." I lol'd. -
A Fry's employee didn't know squat about products they sell? SHOCKING.
-
IT IS SHIPPING DAY!
Really doesn't mean much... just makes it seem like we are that much closer, ehh? (or if they post a...dare i say it... delay
)
-
I am talking to an HP guy right now about that slice thing to try and get $100 credit (hehe) and he said he has a slice for $82 for the Envy 14 which I highly doubt..I am on hold with him since he is checking compatability. I hope I can get $100 refunded lol
-
How are you people getting a $100 slice?
-
OK supposedly......I just ordered a slice battery for $87 the rep assured me it was for the Envy 14. I will get a confirmation email in a few mins and I will post it. I was in disbelief I asked him like 10 times if it was for the Envy 14..if it isn't I will complain later and get some additional money back and return it!
-
and may i ask how you are getting this extra $100 back?
-
Man, I'm gonna be so pissed if a bunch of people get the slice for $82 as an accessory, after I just spent $200. LOL
-
Holy hell. If that's actually the compatible slice, I'll have to complain. Did he give you a model/part number? Can you find it online?
-
StealthReventon Notebook Evangelist
What department did you talk to? I'm gonna try and order it for $87 as well.
-
Stealth, try to get an HP part number!
-
Just call em and complain, I'm almost positive they'll give you $100 back.
-
Wow I got the email and it has HP 6-cell Extended-Life Battery (MU06) in the item description...........................................which I check is for the Envy 17. I will wait and see what it is I guess, but if that is the battery I am going to complain hard. Damn HP closes at 2 AM, I will call back in the morning.
-
A quad-core i7? No. It doesn't work like that. The actual integrated graphics are on the same chip as the processor.
Now, a dual-core i7? Maybe. They are essentially Core i5s, but renamed and higher clocked. It would depend if the BIOS on the Envy 14 supports it.
That's strange, as the Envy 17 doesn't have a battery slice, does it? If it were just an Envy 17 internal battery, why would it be listed as "extended life?" -
I went to see an HP rep in person, after a short argument I got my way by kneecapping him with a tire iron! I got a free slice battery and his wallet and all kinds of other free stuff
(well, I live down the street from their offices, so I could if I felt like it, heh.) -
Ok. I managed to get $70 for inconvenience (ok, why not?) + an additional $23 dollars because processor prices dropped since I placed the order. $93? I'll take it. -

Could I just get another 8cell and hibernate while switching batteries? Or does hibernate not work without constant battery power?
-
I thought everyone said bing didnt stack with student discount????
-
Good question lol..I will get answers in the morning! Time for sleep
-
It won't stack. It will most likely be canceled.
-
It doesn't bing automatically sends you an e-mail. During the pending process they will see he used a different discount and cancel the cash back
-
Hibernate uses 0 power, its fully off.
-
There was some talk about this a while back in the thread when people were talking about the slice. Someone mentioned that some laptops (which? I don't know) have some sort of extra low capacity (say, 5 minutes) backup battery to allow swapping of the primary battery without powering down. No mention of anything like that in spec for he Envy14.
I suppose there'd be no problem if you're hibernating though. -
StealthReventon Notebook Evangelist
Thx. Cool, so does hibernate work well now? Cause I know it had issues in the beta versions. -
Funny thing is the guy put me on hold for like 5 minutes to see if it was compatible with the Envy 14 lol. I asked him if it looked like a tray that covered the entire bottom of the laptop and he said yes soooooooooooooooooo we will see what happens. He cant be that clueless can he?!?!?!!
-
After looking at the picture of that battery, I'd say....yes. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, though.
-
Finally ordered my HP Envy 14. I got Windows 7 home Premium, i5-450M 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 160GB SSD.
-
I hope it is the Envy 14 slice. That either means there's a price cut down the road, or if HP wants to play hardball, we can call in and order one separately.
-
Awesome. What did they give you for an estimated ship date?
-
That manual shows a 540m option that we couldnt buy
Intel Core i5-540M 2.53-GHz, 35W turbo processor (1066-MHz FSB, 3-MB L3 cache) 594188-001 -
yeah I dont think you ordered the slice. The picture posted on what your battery looks like matches the price you paid but it says its compatible with the 17 and def is not the slice for the 14, sorry mate
-
It said July 16 but I'm in Australia ordering it via ebay so it will take longer.
-
Anyone ordered base system with i3? Just curious if it is really is 25W processor and possible to get more battery time out of it.
-
Beta versions of what? Windows or the Envy?
Hibernate has worked like a charm for me in Windows for years. -
According to Intel's Core i3 370m datasheet, it's a 35W CPU, not 25W.
-
I may have missed this, but does anyone know any more about the color of the lid shell? In erathostenes' pics it looks more bronze-y than silver/aluminum.
-
and as far as comparing the Envy 14 to the MBP 13.3 I don't see the relation at all. A more accurate comparison would be the Envy 13 which has a purported and inflated 18.75 hr battery life with slice. Not sure what the actual run time was but nonetheless at least those two were more similar than the 14 and the MBP 13.3.
Personally, I'm taking everything I hear about battery life and withholding judgment until I get my very own Envy. Since I have win7ultimate ready to go, I feel a clean install will get rid of all the bloatware and I am battery ocd so I am confident I can get over 5 hours with some effort.
The envy has superior processor, screen, graphics, aesthetics, ports, compatibility, usability, and possibly even battery life. We still have zero clue what the actual battery life would be regardless of what everyone is saying.
Seeing that I paid just over $1k, I have no idea why anybody would choose a MBP over this machine. Its like picking the iphone 4 over the Evo if you are free from carriers.
*sorry had to get that in*
EDIT: I should mention the closest MBP sibling would the 15 which also has an i5 and starts at a cool $1800 with a 330M and a 320gb 5400 RPM. So before any coupons or discounts you are looking at a starting price of $700 more.
Envy 14 Victory. -
It changes based on the light...as you can see on the left it looks silverish gray and on the right more bronzish. It seems impossible to classify the color, but I think it will look good
-
Thanks for the info, Tee.Kay. I guess I will find out soon. Can't wait!
