Can someone help me understand whats going on here?

Why does the 14 have the optical drive and weigh more than the 15?? This makes zero sense to me.

I was wanting an acer 3820tg but decided it wasn't going to be released so I decided to get an Envy 14 but am a bit peeved that it actually weighs more than the Envy 15.

You answered your own question. The E14 has an optical drive.

The 14 has an 8 cell battery in place of the 6 cell in the 15.
    The optical drive.
The backlit keyboard must add something.
They made things a little easier to access inside which probably added something.

And by more you mean .03lbs or .5 ounces or the weight if Pen?

The 14 is also thicker (1.04" vs 1.11").

hehehe, good to know in case my cat gets fleas ;-)

my wife's MBP is 0.95" and it feels and looks significantly thinner than the E15, which is 0.09" thicker (1.04")

the OP's question, however, was regarding the weight and I was only suggesting perhaps the increased thickness is one factor

Envy 14 is going to be thicker, but that's not a big deal. Weight is also neglible. The real question between the two is:

Do you want performance or battery life?

If you want performance, go with Envy 15.

If you want a little more battery life, go with the Envy 14.

I own the Envy 15 and get about 3 hours of battery life with minimum settings on. 2 Hours with high brightness and wifi on. You can get double that with the Envy 14. The Envy 15 is going to perform noticeably better in games and has a higher resolution.
