hey guys, I have an issue here with a CPU I just ordered from ebay. I installed the Core i5-520M into my HP ENVY 15 with a bios from January 2010. The system boots up for ~5 secs with black screen(nothing showing on screen) and turns off after that. Could this be because the BIOS is not supporting the CPU? Or is this a faulty CPU? It boots fine with the Core i5-430M it came with. I think faulty CPU would not shut off the system during boot right? Wouldn't it just stay blank screen? I wanted to ask before trying to update my BIOS and disassemble the machine again xD

Thanks for the inputs! Happy New Year!!!

Can you please provide the computer's P/N so that I can find out if it is compatible with the board (It is possible that HP white listed some CPUs into the bios)

If I have not mistaken, this should be the product number.

That is weird. The i5-520M is a factory option for the E15-1100. (I had one with a 520M before). Is the 520M you got an Engineering Sample (ES)? From what I know, the E15-1100's can also take an i5-580M (that is not part of the factory lineup) and it works off the bat as well. Maybe you got a defective i5-520M or one that is an ES and ES's are occasionally plagued with faults.

Did you remember to lock down the CPU?

It's not an ES I think. It says SLBU3 on the CPU. Yes, I locked down the CPU, because I tried it twice. Now I re-installed my Core i5-430M, and I am typing on my laptop right now. I was wondering it might be because of an old BIOS from January that is causing the problem?

I was tired of removing all those cables over and over again to try the CPU that's why I'm asking if the BIOS could be the problem before I re-open and try it again with a new BIOS xD

Shouldn't be. My previous Envy had a i5-520M and it was running fine under F. 18. I think you need to be running on F. 18+, even though the platform supports any Arrandale with ease.

I updated a new BIOS and now the computer boots fine! I'm going to run some CPU stressing to ensure that it's fine. The BIOS was probably too old lol.

What the heck... After installing the new CPU. My computer keeps freezing up. Well.. it boots fine into windows, but when I try to install Mass effect 2 or copy something large unto the computer it freezes. Is this a hard drive problem or CPU problem?

I ran prime95 for 15mins with no crashes but once I start copying or installing it freezes! Darn it.

Sucks... The CPU is the cause. I switched back to my Core i5-430M and everything works fine now! I'm glad it was not my 120GB Intel X25-M G2 :D
