    @triplethreatlaptop?

Ya sorry, I did not scroll down and see those specs before I posted. I only clicked on the "See more technical details" which just shows SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support and gets rid of the rest of the specs page.

No issues with it on my lap size-wise, although I have not used it that way for a long session, just few minutes here and there.

Yes the numpad is nice, but be aware that there is no numlock key on this laptop, so you cannot use the number keys as arrows or the usual home/del/end, etc. keys.

Good to hear, only plan on using numpad for numbers anyway and have a desk for majority of use!

Any battery life figures out there?

Very poor on the standard 6 cell battery. Full brightness, I was browsing web (about 6 windows), watched a few youtubes, installed a small program from DVDROM and the Windows battery 12% warning came after only 1hour 5 minutes.

Thanks Nevian for your work in progress review.
You maybe are the only one of us who are near a G73JH and the Envy 17, can you write a table like comparison of advantage/disadv. between the two systems like you have just done in regard of sound quality ???
For example, the G73jh is very much appreciated for the little noise of the fans even in high computational works. What can you tell about the same works on the Envy ? Is it much noiser than g73jh in a silent environment ?
And another question, I read in service manual that the screen is antiglare but in the photos posted it seems create reflections. How do you explain this ? Maybe the glass on the surface of display reflects ?
Last but not least, inside the 2gb card gifted with the Envy I think it is present the user manual of the pc, if it is NOT the service manual allready posted can you post it here for all of us ??

    Thanks a lot !!!!!!

Is that just the base configuration then? I didn't see any options for preconfigured Envy 17 models at the HP site.

Looks like I'm doing pretty good on shipping time. I placed my order on June 2 and initially had an estmated build date of June 11. However, I just received my e-mail this morning at 7:57 AM saying that the system has shipped and anticipated delivery is the 11th (I went with 2 day shipping). Bottom line is that I appear to be ahead of schedule.

I know that Shanghai is 12 hours ahead of us so I hope that the system does actually still get picked up by FedEx today. If it doesn't then I have to wait the entire weekend and I really hate waiting.

I must be getting the guy at Foxconn that likes to drop stuff on the floor for exercise to build mine. Order date May 27, est. ship date June 8 still showing order in production est. ship date June 8th today on status. I don't mind a little wait but I will be calling today to get a little compensation. HannesS I hope you do get your system on friday but I would be a little wary of any information given by HP. I would only trust info provided by FedEx once in their system.

    Oh, what?

I didn't see arrow keys printed on the numpad, but I expected there to be a num lock key nonetheless. Well, I hope the numpad can still be mapped in softwares as the numpad numbers and not wrap them in the same as the number key rows...

My envy is on the truck for delivery this morning!! Was scheduled for Friday but FedEx must of got their butts in gear. Should have mine in the next couple hours.

Going to burn recovery discs and do a fresh install first thing. Question about that, since I'm burning recovery discs is it necessary to keep the recovery partition on my main drive. It's an SSD drive so I want to maximize my space there. Just want to make sure if I delete it I won't use it because I have the discs.

Lucky. FedEx should have updated my status by now, but it looks like there's been a lag.

As for the recovery partition... I would assumed that if the recovery backup discs take 3-5 DVDs, then they will hold the contents of the partition itself, thus making the partition irrelevant. But...you never know. Do you mind being the guinea pig for us in this case? :p

If you want to play it safe, you could try setting your secondary drive as primary, and install the backup recovery discs on that (that is, if you ordered yours with a second drive). It might seem like a waste of time, but it's about the only safe method I can think of in order to verify that the backup discs will create the backup partition again. Good luck.

P.S. I will have to sacrifice NBR today in order to study for a final exam I have tomorrow. Lucky break for you guys, right?

Beats have some wierd speaker controls... but they can be tweaked for optimal sound. With the envy 15 after the tweak a user came up with, the sound was upto 2.5x as loud as before and very clear and crisp, you should have a browse through the 2nd gen envy 15 lounge, or just post a request on there

I still need to order my 2nd harddrive case and cables. I called them and they said they needed my serial number because the part number wasn't showing up. Has anyone else been able to order the casing before getting their envy?

Hey guys I actually have an Envy 15 2nd Gen, however, I have a friend that was impressed with my Envy and he is looking to get a 17 so I have been following this thread. I notice several of you mention a high pitched noise coming from the computer. I have had the motherboard replaced twice and a whole replacement computer once trying to get this fixed. The only way I have found to eliminate the noise is to run Folding@Home (noise only happens when Processor is idle)

I noticed that many of you have noticed this noise on your 17s and someone has figured out a fix for it.

The search function on this site is useless and there are 112 pages. Could someone be so kind as to link me to that fix or re-post it?

For the people with new Envy 17s: is the front edge of the computer beveled a little so as to not irritate the wrists while typing?

I have taped two cut pieces of mouse pad to the wrist wrests on my computer to alleviate that and to reduce the heat on my wrists while gaming.

    Your responses are much appreciated

    My envy has arrived!

I'm burning the recovery discs right now. Nohm I will be the guinea pig on this. I plan on deleting the partition because the Recovery manager said even if the drive is damaged or the recovery partition is deleted the discs will restore the laptop to factory state so I have some piece of mind.

    First impressions:

Laptop is really really nice! Not really descriptive but I'm in awe over the design. Nice and thin for a DTR and very quiet. I can hear my dv9500 over it still if that gives you any indication. It's getting a bit louder now as I'm burning the discs but that's understandable.

Honestly there isn't that much HP bloatware on this. I just set up another coworkers last generation DV6 and there was at least double the amount of crap on that one. I'm still doing a clean install to get the optimium experience.

Wow SSD is blazing fast. Holy (bleep) I never knew an operating system could run like this. So worth the money.

Oh and for people wondering about the 3.0 USB port. It is not a blue port but there is SS then usb symbol below it indicting it is the 3.0 port.

I like the touchpad because it is completely flat and without the buttons. It will take some getting used to and I haven't figured out how to scroll yet because on my 9500 it had a scroll zone on the right side.

I'm compiling a list of drivers I downloaded thru HP support plus a list in the program files that look important and copying the SWSetup and can hopefully identify those as well.

    That's it for now!

    Shipping Speed: Two-Day Shipping
    Order Total: $170.99

over the years i've noticed that memory is one of those things that if you're not going to punish by overclocking or by putting into a computer that will experience issues with bad electric currents and outages then you're safe going with cheaper memory...so long as it matches or surpasses your specs. i bought transcend becasue of the price..171 shipped with no tax from aamazon (they seemed to hvae raised the price).

I think you are correct. Looks like the info from HP jumps the gun a little bit. It's now 12:30 PM on the East Coast so it's now just after midnight in Shanghai. I guess that means that 2 day shipping from there won't make it by Frday. Rats, was really hoping to play with it over the weekend!

i've owned variations of 15, 16 and 17 inch laptops. i'm normally pretty rough with my laptops and use them everywhere... in bed, desks, in cars, restaurants, the toilet (you do too), backyard, etc i think without question it's a lot easier to work with smaller laptops... while no 17 inch has ever been "easy" ...i think the envy, in comparison to other 17s, is favorable. it is seemingly lighter and thinner than my last 17 (dv9500). with only one day of use, it's hard to give a good impression on just how portable it is.

i left my envy at home burning a disc...the restore creation process takes a LONG time. it asked me for 5 dvds to make the restore...it did not let me create a backup to an external drive, or to a DL dvd... only usb flash drives and DVD-Rs or CDs. it takes about 30 minutes for it to "split the image" and then it takes a long time "writing"...then another session of "verifying"... does the writing and verifying with each new dvd... i'm disc 4 right now...at lunch i'll finish 5.

what i'll do after i get home after work is bring the asus g73jh over and we'll do some side by side comparison. i have to warn you guys, though, the asus is a really powerful laptop. it runs games milky smooth. it's just enormous...especially compared to an envy. i'll take some pics and we'll run the same benchmarks....AFTER i put in my SSD, that is.

the envy does indeed come with a 2gb flash card and it appears to only have a guide in there. i haven't actually seen the manual you're referring to but it's probably the same one.

i was kind of pissed because when i was removing the hdd cover the manual made it seem terribly easy (which, i guess, it is)... you remove two screws and then pull the damn lid off. look, i removed the two screws...the thing was on their TIGHT still. the only slack i had was right below the two screws. the middle was NOT moving. i was afraid i would probably snap it or something. i ended up getting a thin knife and sticking it right down the middle and prying it up a bit...THEN it came out easily.

I have only owned 17 inch laptops because I never wanted to sacrifice performance/screen res for a smaller laptop. It's one of those things once you get used to it you won't realize a difference. I know I don't. My wife has a 15.6 inch laptop and while it is smaller and a little less weight to me it isn't that huge a difference.

Just surprised no one has done one yet.

Well I'm having a problem doing the clean install. Appears my Win 7 ISO is corrupt. It stops me to load a CD/DVD drive device driver. Read a few places I need to re-download the ISO and burn at a slower speed. This is going to take extra time, rats. Anyone else have suggestions?

Yeah I'm re-downloading the ISO using a download manager to make sure I get the file 100%, that's gotta be what's causing it cause I didn't use one last time. I'm just staring at the computer right now watching it download with my envy turned off, sucks!

I envy you !!! btw. I have a few questions for you. Does your Envy 17 has quad core i7, or dual core i7/i5/i3. I am just wondering if the USB 3.0 port only comes with quad core CPU like in the Envy 15, or it also comes with dual core CPU.

Also, can you check whether your SSD is intel G1 or G2 please?

    many thanks !!!

Just out of curiusity, has anyone noticed any dead or permanently lit pixels on their displays or does everyone so far seem to have a perfect display panel?

Hey guys. I am from Austria. I coem to this site and hear you talking about the envy 17. I am waiting for this one to release in Austria/Germany. In Germany you can order the HP ENVY 14 before the 17 looking here:

HP ENVY 14-1010eg Notebook-PC (WN945EA) Spezifikationen - HP Privatanwender Produkte

we only can order one configuration so its much bad. the envy 17 should be released at june 19 i hope so :)

i hope the configuration of the envy 17 in our country will be good with i7-720, full hd, blu-ray and so on.

i hope you are lucky with yours 17 when it till arrives.

I hope also you can tell me about some details about:

    - heat and fan activity = loudness
    - the keyboard is it smooth

thx for answers and sorry for my english..

    LG peter

So far, it seems that all the SSDs that came with owner's ENVY 17s were all G2s.
