    Metril,

Must've been a mass mailing, because I just received mine as well:

    "
Due to production delays we will be unable to ship your order on the original estimated ship date. The revised estimated ship date for your order is 7/15/2010 or no later than business days from the original estimated ship date. If you prefer not to wait you may cancel your order by either replying to this e-mail message with your order number or calling our toll-free customer service number at 866-288-1610 between 7:00 A.M. - 2:00 A.M. (ET) Monday through Friday or on Saturday between 10:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. (ET). If you choose to cancel your order, your refund will be released by HP within 24-48 business hours of cancellation confirmation. The posting of your refund to your credit card, e-finance, or PayPal account is subject to your bank’s processing time which usually takes 3-5 business days.

If we do not hear from you before we ship your order, we will assume you have agreed to this shipment delay and still want your custom PC order. As soon as your custom PC is ready for shipment, it will be assigned a tracking number with our carrier and you will receive a Shipment Notification e-mail from us. You can then check your tracking number online to obtain the estimated delivery date.

We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused and thank you for your patience.

    Sincerely,
    Customer Service
HP Home & Home Office Store

Maybe they are trying to fix some problems as the Vaio_F11 was also delayed when they stopped production to fix some initial run problems.

It could be also JIT or delays caused by all you guys playing the order & return game or simply all the buyers that had to exchange their Envy_17 because of wobbling & whatnot other issues.

I guess that in the land of instant gratification, the wait must be excruciating. ;)

Hello, notebookreview. This is my first post.

Anyway, I'm getting a new laptop (serving as a desktop replacement.) and I've been looking between a 15" MBP, a Core i7-740QM HP Envy 17 w/ 8 GB of RAM, Blu-ray, and a 6+9 cell battery, and an Asus G73JH w/ advanced wi-fi, 6x Blu-ray, secondary battery, and all other standard specs.

I'm going to be using it for some fairly demanding CS3/CS5 work, along with some of the standard stuff, plus some occasional, light gaming (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers: War for Cybertron), both on 1080p w/ all settings maxed out. I also do a lot of video encoding.

Out of all the 3, I was taking a really good look at the Envy 17 because it seemed like the best, in terms of general stuff.

I just had a couple of questions about the general stuff, and this seemed like the best place to look.

Heat: Does it get hot on the keyboard/palmrest areas? If so, how much? I have a pretty high tolerance for heat.

    Screen: Any flickering/dead pixel issues?

Battery life: How long does it last w/ 6+9-cell battery under light usage? Moderate? Heavy? (just in case I need to use it on the road).

    Thanks in advance!

The battery for the Envy 17 is either a 6 cell or a 9 cell:

This is correct, in that you will have to hibernate the machine to switch batteries. However, the graphics are somewhat inaccurate, especially the first one. The 6 cell battery is flush when it is installed and the 9 cell doesn't extend quite so much as the picture shows.

    @Joe Bleau

If you paid $2000 for a laptop, would you live with a wobble? Could you live with the wobble? I tried to do so for a week and let me tell you that the wobble was annoying.

Every time I went to type, the notebook rocked diagonally to the right bottom corner. While I typed, I could tell that the screen just wasn't right. It was crooked. Take my hands off of it and it rocked back onto its other legs.

What's more, when you drop the price of the laptop and up the default specs within 3 days of my replacement and you won't even give me a price adjustment, well I am going to return the replacement and make use of the 21 day return policy. There was a $350 price difference between what I had and the new offerings when you took configurations into account. HP was willing to give me a measly $100 back.

So, enough of your "land of instant gratification" and mocking those of us who returned our Envy 17s and bought new ones. It wasn't our fault. We paid good money. We expect a product without flaws. A dead/stuck pixel is understandable, but large gaps, wobbles, and scratches are not.

At the moment, I am extremely pissed with HP because this is the second order of mine in 3 weeks that has been delayed. This is the second time that they failed to send me a delay notification until I called them and told them. This is the second time that HP has failed to keep its end of the bargain.

metril, I never criticized a user returning or exchanging his machine because of some legitimate claims.

I criticize people abusing the return period policy & ordering 2 laptops with the intention of keeping only one or ordering several brands & using their living-rooms as a showroom instead of moving their butt & visiting a brick & mortar store.

More & more mail-order stores are imposing re-stocking fees because of abusive consumers returning non-defective goods.

The instant gratification joke was addressed to people blowing a fuse because their orders is delayed a few days. I explained the reasons why an order could be delayed including Just-in-time (JIT).

When ordering stuff online, it takes anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks to get the stuff where I live. Meanwhile, I smell the orchids. ;)

Joe I was thinking about ordering a third laptop. I'm also working on redirecting the cargo plane carrying said E17 to fly directly over CR and block your sun. I spoke to the pilot scheduled to carry my third laptop and, provided I can get the flight path modified (albeit heavily), he agreed to drop a crate full of wobbly E17's on your orchid plot. It wasn't easy but I greased palms like a [expletive].

Your point, while valid, is somewhat difficult to extrapolate across the population. For example, the Envy lineup was pulled from all of the Best Buy's in my vicinity a few weeks prior to my decision to consider it. I'm not sure if you're aware, but I briefly owned a Sony Vaio F12 which I had to return due to a sub-par display characterized by terrible light bleed and a very poor viewing angle. For the record, that laptop was also unavailable at almost every major electronic store I visited. Strange, but true.

Welcome to the board. Are you considering an Envy 17 system?

No, I'm happy with my Vaio_F11 which I intend to keep for a while but a friend is and he is not fluent in English. With the logistics & customs being a 4 hours round trip on partly dirt roads to get a lappy here, we can't replace it 3 times so I'm here to feel the pulse & read real Envy_owner's feedback & experiences.

Overheating is a real concern as we live in the tropics. Wobble can be DIY fixed by loosening the two body halves & twisting it flat or shimming it with a rubber patch.

Initial quality seems to be a problem with that model according to what I've read so far.

Bing Cashback is only for US residents so for that kind of money, the Envy_17 really needs to deliver, right off the bat.

In fact I suspect that the Bing Cashback is so high because HP's Envy_17 sales are not going so well @ their current high price point.

    Che,

Correlation does not imply causation. Empirical evidence suggests BCB rewards are cyclical. Dell, drugstores, HP and even eBay all fluctuated between 5-30%. I snagged some great deals on fast primes last time it crested.

Thanks for the suggestion, but before I take a blacksmiths' hammer to my E17, I'll consider returning it.

You sit tight and when my E17 arrives I'll run temps on my 32nm process right quick for you. Glad to hear your friend is also happy with his F11.

ok, so it's been about two and a half weeks since i've owned my envy17. and everything's great about this laptop. if you're not a gamer, this laptop is absolutely amazing. but i do play games and after running assassin's creed 2 for 5 mins, i got around an average of 87 C for gpu, and 83 C for cpu. when im playing assassin's creed off the table i get around 80-83 C for gpu and 71-73 C for cpu. what i find weird is that these temperatures dont climb too far, unless you're playing for over 2-3 hours, it would only increase about 2-5 degrees for me. i think my 21 days are up already since i was away for two weeks, but ill still call to see if i can return it.

p.s- i dont think there will be a solution to the heating issue. the updated bios did drop the temps 10 degrees only because the fan was offered more energy to spin faster. a fan this small can only spin so fast. and it's not the hardware problem. many laptops have these configurations and they are no where near as hot as this envy. it might be the graphics card.

also, i've learned to adapt to the heat just by putting the laptop on the edge of the table just enough so that the vents are free.

    Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of buying an Envy17 from the US and having it shipped to the UK, but as theres quite a lot of risk doing this in terms of support would you guys mind helping me out a bit and post the manufacturers part number (Think its labelled Product: xxx and Model: xxx) from the base of your Envy17 (not the serial number) - this is so I can find out whether HP UK will provide warranty for it in the UK

    Many Thanks

My envy 17 has died. Problems begun after 2 days of serious gaming and started with bluescreening, yesterday it died completely. I am getting a full refund. What a shame i was so pleased with it and the gaming performance was awesome. I am thinking of buying another envy 17 maybe with an i7 cpu but the next purchase will have to wait until august.

As a student who is just about done a compsci degree, I'd say that having the large, high-res screen (def get the 1080P) with room for two windows side by side (esp with the new Aero interface) is a huge boon to programming.

The large trackpad and nice keyboard w/ numpad are helpful too.

Do consider that the ATI card will likely be less than amenable to running a native Linux distro - but with an i-series Core processor, you'd be fine just virtualizing it within Windows.

Also, I somewhat doubt that you need a quad-core, even for heavy programming. The i5 has 4 logical cores; the i7 has 8. Unless you plan on doing heavy video encoding, I don't think you'll benefit from the additional 4. Ditto with 8GB of RAM.

You should also consider portability - this is closer to "transportable" than truly "portable", and the size would be somewhat awkward to whip out in class. But if having a decently sized screen to work on is important (it is to me - I was going ape when I had to use my 14" laptop to program, and even my 1680x1050 monitor was annoying), then you'll have to make the size tradeoff anyways. For a 17" laptop this one is quite nice.

Gaming is wonderful on the laptop, albeit with the necessary mention of heat. From my experience, running an i5 version in a cool (read: <25 degrees C) room on a table when the vents are not blocked, it runs very cool even in heavy gaming a la Crysis. However, block a vent (i.e. by resting it on a leg) or run it in a warm room (>30 C), or worse still both, and it will get quite hot. I mean, what do you expect? You have basically a full-fledged Radeon 4770 sitting in there. If you block its cooling, guess what? It gets hot ;)

    just recieved my Envy 17.
Atm i have both the Sony Vaio F12xxx (non-glossy EU 1920x1080 screen) and the Envy 17 1085 (6GB ram, 1920x1080i glossy screen).

I have to say, im a little dissapointed with the screen quality on the Envy 17, when i saw envy had LED on the specs i would expect more vivid colors

the colors on the Sony Vaio is much warmer and more crispy then the Envy.

How can I compare what kind of display that sits in this computer and maybe compare to you other envy 17 owners? Have anybody tried to calibrate the screen and might have the color profile file to share ?

EDIT: I have the two laptops to try and find out which one to keep :)

I kind of wish there was an option for a different (less powerful) ATI HD5xxx, as it looks like the HD5850 is the main source of heat.

Is it technically possible to replace it?

The driver update for the trackpad seems to have fixed the only quirky thing about my e17. It used to be jerky at times, especially when I was doing a click and drag(thumb on button while finger dragging). After the update, it seems to be much more fluid and responsive. Perhaps there was an initial problem with multitouch. Anyone else notice an improvement with the trackpad after the update.

So far, on the issue of heat, I've been seeing mixed thoughts: for some, the heat was being channeled out of the vent on the upper left-hand corner, and that along with the WASD area got warmer than normal, but in other cases, I'm seeing that the left palm rest heats up a lot (though the BIOS update lessened this issue).

So, in your experience (w/ the updated BIOS), how did it go?

And also (According to PCMag's review of the Gen1 Envy 15), how would high heat have a negative effect on Battery Life?

One last thing: Has anyone noticed that they've taken down the options for the Core i5/i7-620m in the actual configurations (though the specs say otherwise)?

Nope, it's soldered onto the mobo.

If you're using a Core i7, that'll be a big heat source as well.

There's 2 ways to do that:

    1. Open catalyst control center, set the powerplay option to max battery time
    2. Or do the same in the windows 7 energy settings

Did wonders for me (before my envy17 died) and the performance was still awesome.

Amazon Envy 17-1011NR thoughts so far:

    - no wobble
    - slightly warm left palmrest (haven't done any gaming yet)
    - getting used to switch from 1920x1080 (coming from 1920x1200 which I really liked)

-screen is bright (see pic below, but Gateway is 2 years old, and bulbs go dim after a while anyways)

    - comparing my brothers and friends powerbook pro's, the build quality of the case of the HP is not up to par (as others complained, the edges of the laptop are not flush with the inside case, maybe slight 1 mm gap around 40-50 percent of edges) (powerbook is completely flush all around no gaps)

    - trackpad sucks, even with new drivers, maybe have to play with it more (if using two hand method, left hand click and right hand cursor, have to be careful left finger does not go into trackpad past the left click button box, and even one hand use its kind of sloppy)

    - screen is not glass or hard plastic like iPhone 4 or other cell phones (no flame please), but like soft touch rubberish plastic. I never touch my screen anyways, so no biggie.

    - 9 cell battery lifts the butt up, which I like because I use as desktop replacement mostly - plug in HDMI monitor, mouse, keyboard everyday, and it helps vent out heat (currently I'm using 2 rubber bumps to lift up my current laptop, Gateway 9-cell battery sticks out back rather than underneath), I have yet to test which way is better for tossing into my messenger bag.

    - performance by feeling, ok so far, need to do clean install first, Gateway is 5.2 Windows Score, and Envy is 5.9 (these numbers don't really mean much anyways)

    - i really thought the audio would be "amazing" lol, but a laptop speaker is a laptop speaker. I find it much better in front of laptop though shooting at you rather than the Gateway speakers on top of keyboard shooting up - in comparison, these "Beats" doesn't really beat my older Inspiron 9300 speakers, maybe a little clearer. Need a quiet room to hear, if you have TV on in the background, laptop at full blast sounds weak.

-screen hinges are good, and hold tight at any angle, however, past 90 degrees, you need the second hand to hold the front down.

-not sure if I care if the screen has no latch to lock into folding position, BUT you can't keep lid open at 5-10 degrees, it will automatically close - because I dock this most of the time, leaving it open slightly helps heat vent out of palm rests and keyboard, so I will need to wedge something in each time i dock.

Yellojello, would you mind answering this for me? My order says between the 16th and 23rd, and I just wanted to know where in that range you received yours.

    I ordered on June 05.

    First estimated arrival date: July 19 2010 - August 02 2010
Changed to new estimated arrival date: July 13 2010 - July 19 2010

Order Status when logged in: Shipping Estimate: July 6, 2010 (meaning shipped out, not received)

Once you get a tracking number, the UPS delivery time is accurate, mine shipped from New Jersey I think, going to San Jose, CA took about a week, received on July 12.

    1. High temperatures degrade the way batteries work and reduce the battery life. I think, though I do not recall, that this is especially true in the types of batteries used in laptops. (Lithium Ion)

    2. Yes I noticed and I really wanted an i7-620M or an i5-520M.

The i5 options were taken out for the 4th of July sale for some reason. I think they are going to be back quite soon.

I received mine 2 weeks early. Amazon expected ship date was July 15-22; however, it arrived July 6. Would have made it earlier, but it was a holiday weekend. I ordered it on June 6.

alright, so with the maximizing battery life option in catalyst control center for the gpu, my tempuratures lowered a lot. my max temperature for my gpu was 68 degrees after around 10 mins of assassins creed2. and my maximum for my cpu was 69. these temperatures were recorded while the vents are free, i would assume that it would be 10-15 degrees higher if placed where vents may have some sort of obstacle in the way of the airflow. the drawback of course, was the gaming experience. but, there's a setting called the catalyst A.I. which is supposed to take away some of the graphics for better performance. it wasn't noticeable at all, but i enabled it anyway. so even with the catalyst A.I on, the gaming performance was etchy, like i was running low on ram. it feels exactly like playing crysis with 25-30 fps.

For those of you who wanted the i5-450m on e17 HP is now offering the e17 as a quick ship model that comes with it. I has blu ray, 6GB ram, 640 GB HDD (320 GB HDD x2, which is good if you want to upgrade w/o paying for the mounting brackets), plus the 6 and 9 cell batteries. Bad news is no 1080p display  which imo makes the blu ray pointless. The price is $1499, which I think is pretty steep considering it only has an i5 and no full HD. But (in theory) you should receive this rather quickly and not have to wait a month+ like those who got CTO.

I have a question about the envy 17 touchpad for someone:

Is the envy 17 touchpad and buttons like the ones on the new pavillions, or more like the ones on the envy 15? I was in best buy today and played with some of the new pavillions and I was horrified by their touchpads. They look about the same, but unlike the envy 15 touchpads which are very smooth with relatively easy to click buttons, the touchpads on the new dv7 and other pavillions have an uncomfortable(to me) bumpy textured surface, and the buttons are annoyingly hard to press down. So which is the envy 17?

    thanks
