I hope you're right. I would buy one now, I think, if I could get it with an i5-540. Just don't need and i7, it's overkill, and I'd like to have better battery life and less heat. Not sure how long to wait...

For the i5 processors, I would say that they will be back once the rush for the Envy 14 dies down.

I was lookin at ebags and they have so many its taking forever for me to choose. Decisions........decisions. I know from my last experience though that Im starting to hate one strap over the shoulder type bags.

I used to have the HDX 18 with a mobile edge bag and even though I didnt carry it around often I hated carrying it at all lol. Im thinking of trying a modern backpack for this envy.

I hope this doesn't happen to me. My system is really fast and I like it but it always gets BSOD when playing Dawn of War II. Maybe I should keep pushing it. I did the HD, Memory and Graphics Memory test and they all passed flawlessly. Can compatibility errors cause consistent blue screens?

Don't know if anyone who bought the E17 on the first day with 25% BCB like I did is still posting. The 60 day wait for BCB is over and the full amount was just made available. The interesting thing is that when HP lowered the price about a month ago I called and got a price adjustment of $450. Not only did this not invalidate the BCB, but they also didn't adjust the BCB amount, meaning I have 25% of the original price. All in all a good deal, but not any better than ordering last week with 30%.

for those of you looking for bags/cases, the ibex 17 swiss gear is the best. i've had it for about two months, and it's perfect for the envy. no other bags allow 360 degrees of protection without sacrificing the looks nor the space that the bag provides. i traveled to shanghai with that bag and fits perfectly under the airplane seat in front of me. this bag is very durable, and very spacious. i noticed that a lot of bags have the laptop sleeve knitted right on the back of the shoulder straps, which makes it vulnerable to all sorts of damage when backpack is placed on the ground. however the ibex 17 has the sleeve in the middle of the main compartment, allowing cushioning for both the front and the back of the laptop. this makes it much safer for your laptop when your bag isn't carried. As far as the price goes, i received my ibex 17 for only $67 dallors on buydig.com. as for the space, i was able to carry half the amount of clothes that i had in my medium sized luggage, including my laptop along with the battery charger. as for the durability, i've traveled to many places in a short time span, and looks as good as new(even smells fresh.) i'll be a first year college student soon, and this is the bag that i'll be using throughout the year, possibly throughout all four years. honestly, you can't go wrong with the ibex.

the shoulder straps are also very well cushioned, making 20 pounds feel like 10.

I wouldn't worry i think i simply got a bad envy. I did push it rather hard but i think that only sent it over edge a little sooner.

The envys do get hot when gaming so get a laptop cooler (zalman nc-2000 for example).

Just a quick note on my new Envy 17 I7-840; it runs MUCH cooler than the i7-720 that I returned. I mean, it’s considerably cooler to the touch. My 720 would get very hot under the left hand rest under average use. The 840 is usually cool to the touch, except for the left side near the heat vents. Under normal conditions it’s about 50-55 degrees. My 720 was always around 65 and the left palm rest was almost always warm.

Also, it seems the fan runs more efficiently. I usually can barely hear it, but when it spins up, it seems to push air more effectively than the 720.

I don’t know what the differences are. I had the thing open and it appears to be the same (fan, layout, etc.). The only other differences of note: I had the SSD in the 720, but Momentus XT’s in the 840. I also built vanilla Win7 Ultimate on the 840 whereas the 720 had the HP OS install.

At any rate – I’m VERY pleased with the Envy 17 i7-840. Some of the benchmarks aren’t as high as my older desktop, but it’s more than adequate for a laptop.

Besides, I just scored an HPE-190t i7-980x with 24GB of RAM so I’ll be using that for my heavy lifting. :D

Wondering how much longer the standard battery last with an i5-540 vs i7-840. Can someone with i5-540 tell me their max battery time please? and also someone with an i7-840? I know it depends largely on what you're doing, but in general I'd like some feedback, as I'm trying to decide if I should wait for the i5s to be offered again. thanks

Understandable, the 740 and 840 QM's are more power efficient than the 720. But I didn't think it would make such a big difference. Good deal.

Also, that's one hell of a desktop, what programs are you running?

Hey all you envy 17 owners. I'm thinking of buying one. The envy 17-1006tx. I have heard that there are some heat issues and warping. I am trying to decide between this and the DV7-4003tx which has a slower processer (1.6) but has blueray player, more Ram and harddrive. Graphics is only ATI HD 5650.
Your advice is most welcome. I need to decide soon as this is a replacement for another HP notebook. Thanks.

Hey kiwi_style. I've just read your threads and you said Hp have replaced an Envy17-1006tx with an Envy17-1007tx(Australian model). This model doesn't appear on the Hp website. Hp are replacing a faulty notebook for me when I decide which one I'd like. I had made a decision but found out that some of the specs aren't as good as the one I already own. I have been looking at the Envy's but would like a blueray etc as that's in my current model. I was told that They will only replace an NZ model with an NZ model. You have managed to get an Austalian model out of them. Is this true? I'd love to have the specs you have and am going in tomorrow to talk about it. Please reply soon, thanks

Having a piece of "dirt" always on the screen bugs me. At least on a brand new unit.

Luckily. Amazon has a great return/exchange policy. Sucky thing is that I have to wait 2-5 weeks for the next batch. My current lappy still runs good though. So no rush.

    @koopal

The 840QM and 740QM are higher binned processors because they were found to exceed the requirements for the 720QM, thus were upped in speed.

If all 3 processors have the same TDP, then the 740QM and 840QM will run cooler than the 720QM at the same frequency.

I'm deciding between the Envy 14 and the Envy 17.
I have a great desktop for gaming already, but I will be going abroad to study for two semesters (Spring and Summer). I need a laptop for school in the fall, though, and it would be nice to have a laptop that will power through games (especially Final Fantasy 14) when I'm gone.

So basically I would like the perfect miracle laptop that can never exist :D

    What do you guys suggest?

actually, i had ordered an envy 14, but decided to buy an envy 17 in a retail store when i saw it. the 14 that i ordered had some slightly better specs in some areas, but for almost the same amount, i got the 17 as it came with more ram, core i5, 2 batteries and bd ... for less than 1400 (envy 17-1010nr). if they had the 1011nr, i would have bought it as the screen res is better on that model, but 1600x900 still works nicely on a 17.3" display. on a 14.5" display, 1600x900 would be even better and you can fit more on the screen, but everything shrinks a bit.

still new only 2 days now, i regret the larger form factor of the 17. the 14 would have been perfect, but the extras that were missing from the envy 14 for essentially the same price was what ultimately changed my mind.

regardless, the 17 is still quite portable and light enough. envys come with a nice suede-like pouch, so you could slip it in there for added protection before you throw it in a laptop bag. ultimate portability goes to the 14.

Keywords: calibration, display, color balance, blue tint, brightness, contrast, accuracy

    Hey all,

There were some discussions earlier on from people who wanted to calibrate their displays. I, too, found mine to be unusually bright (washed out) and way, waaaaay too blue (reds looked more like tans).

After some experimentation, I ended up calibrating my screen using the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I used a video played across both the Envy LCD and a Sony Bravia LCD (set to Warm 2 and connected by HDMI) as a reference. Not a very 'professional' way to do it but it worked well for me.

MUCH happier now. Human skin tones actually look human; contrast is greatly enhanced; and the blues still pop. The screen can now honestly be said to be 'beautiful'.

    Key points:
    - the important settings seemed to be the color gammas. I ended up reducing them all to around 0.60, with red being different from green/blue
    - for whatever reason, ATI drivers don't use your color profile by default when you restart. So I altered my existing Catalyst profiles (max battery and performance) to include my custom color profiles, and put one of these in my Windows startup folder. All set!

If someone wants the profile, PM me and I'll post the settings...once I'm back from work (banking is brutal =( )

    Cheers

    Hey all,

So I love the Envy 17, but I'm trying to play Empire TW and every single time I try, the game freezes after a few minutes, and eventually a green screen appears (but with no discernable lines).

I'm wondering if anyone here has any ideas? Or maybe someone could point me in the direction of a better place to post this question? Could it have something to do with my gpu drivers?

I'm using the i7 820 QM, with 8 GB RAM

    Thanks for any advice!

Went through a couple of 17s and decided on the i5 processor. First was a i7 which bogged all the way down to a multiplier of one. Couldn't even play a bluray. Some build quality issues too.

Got the I5 and it's better, still 85c stressed though. Same "bowing" from the aluminum on the exhaust side too and some imperfect finish. Still trying to fix it. Anyway, here are some pics of the laptop disassembled...

    I need help guys.

I am trying to install a new hard drive.

1- I burned DVD recovery media.
2- Swapped out the stock HD for the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB
3- Booted from recovery DVD #1
4- Selected restore windows from given options.
5- Computer formats HDD and copies installation files from discs 1 through 5 to HDD then prompts to remove all discs and hit enter to reboot into the windows installation phase.
6- E17 boots into black screen with the following "No bootable device found. Press any key..."

I repeated the restore process with the same result. I also went into BIOS and changed boot device priorities from internal CD/DVD to HDD; no difference. "No bootable device found. Press any key...."

    Any ideas????

    This is annoying.

The recovery disc only work on the same size of hard drive that your Envy came with. Look at the first page of this forum thread for instructions on how to do a clean install using a different size drive from your original.

techgadget09 .... is that an i7 mb ? i just picked up an i5 1010nr a few days ago. bios version f06, it runs hot to the left of the trackpad. according to those pictures, neither processor nor gpu are in that corner. unless the i5 mb is layed out differently ... not sure y itd get hot there.
updated to f07 bios last nite, but too soon to say if it improves heat. a little worried about this because heat will eventually break something. the battery area doesnt get hot so thats good at least i dont have to worry about dead batteries in 3-6 months. i discharged the spare to 40% & refrigerated it so it doesnt go to waste.

    @NAZ_VEGAS

You could do a clean install on the original drive and then use an imaging program like Acronis to create and dump an image onto the new drive. This will definitely work regardless of drive size.

In other news, my third Envy shipped out and is supposed to be delivered on the 22nd. That's 3 days ahead of schedule. We shall see. Here's to hoping that there are no problems. :)

    Zero,
My i5-540 also runs hot to the left of the touch pad. I doubt the design is different, perhaps the keyboard module doesn't do as good of a job conducting heat and that's why you don't feel it higher.

The new drive is the same size as the old one 500GB, albeit from a different manufacturer and with that added 4GB NAND which may or may not throw the totals off.

The clean install guide doesn't help me much. It talks about prepping a thumb drive and how the installation will proceed:

1- I already burned a set of DVD's. Only one set is allowed and I have no reason to believe my DVD's are bad.
2- I never get to the steps discussed in the guide because the drive will not boot to the installation phase.

dont think the kb is involved because this is below it, closer to the left corner....

was the envy 17 offered with the i5 540 processor ?
i was somewhat griping that i took the 450, i wanted a 2.93GHz processor, but settled for 2.66 in favor of dual hdds, ram, bluray for under 1400 ....

Amazon now list the delivery date of the HP Envy from 2 to 5 weeks. I don't understand why they list it this way. When I spoke to a customer service rep he said the earliest is 5 weeks! I was suppose to receive my laptop today, no email yet.

Yes it was. At least for a few weeks prior to the 4th of July sale.

From what I remember on a flat desk, while browsing I was at 62-65 C. Heavy usage topped out at 75C. 54-59 at idle.

My Amazon order shipped yesterday, and will be here tomorrow. It initially said I would receive it between the 16th and 23rd, so it definitely hit that mark. When talking to Amazon a few weeks ago when I ordered, they said they would receive the next batch of Envys on the 19th, which was yesterday, which is likely why mine shipped yesterday.

I've got an Amazon Envy 17-1011nr being delivered that comes with 2x320 GB HDD. I want to swap out one HDD with an Intel 160GB SSD I also have.

Is the procedure simple enough - should I use the SSD immediately opening the Envy out the box or install on Amazon config first and do some kind of clone after? Bit concerned about the RAID config which I don't understand, not having had a RAID computer before.. tnx for any ideas.

That would be neat if it was but I would say it was fake since not even HP has that processor listed on its website. Maybe a future model? hopefully they will eventually get around to fixing the issues with the current ones.

    @paltkik

There is no RAID on the Envy 17 because the HM55 chipset does not support any sort of RAID.
