I get 57c when idle for the CPU, GPU is hot and goes all the way up to 90c as well![]()

I've been using CPU whine as a reason to give me a replacement. I don't mention the body defects even though thats the main reason I RMA'd my first envy.

i5s are back. hurray!

Unfortunately, the shutter glasses range is only going to be 3-5ft. according to their specs which means more like 4 ft.
I could see it being fun for gaming, but I can tell you from experience that the 3D effect on a smaller screen (37") is not nearly as good as a 2D big screen (42") even though the size difference is not huge. I also hate to say it, but I have not seen a single 3d laptop screen that is as nice in 2D as the top end Envy display (brightview 1080p).
Plus, it would really only be useful for games because I, for one, would not like to sit and watch a 17" screen for 2 hours at 3ft away.
Biggest roblem with 3D is still that it isn't believable 3D. Avatar is perhaps the best done, and it isn't even that good. The layering is too harse and the whole effect is like an extremely well done shadowbox. At this point, to me is it a novelty in the consumer market. The CAD rendering 3D displays on the other hand are NIIIIIICE! -
So HP discontinued the Envy 13 and 15 on the US website, and then dropped the price of the Envy 17 to $1299 (down from $1399). Was finally about to jump, until I saw that it comes base with the i5-460M. To upgrade to the i7-720QM (which is what it had been for the past few months now) costs $200 making it $1499, even though none of the other specs have changed! Some discount!

havent even bothered to include a blu-ray burner option ? ... thats some deal alright ...

OK, thats good, but maybe someone know about some specific informations in dB?

Just got my Envy 17 1011nr specs from newegg.
This is my temp on normal mode
CPU = 54-60
GPU = 57-60
This is my temp on game mode.. Played mass effect 2 on highest mode..
CPU = 65-72
GPU = 70-75
The top left side are super hot to touch..
BTW, i want to try the eyefinity on 3 monitors.. what cables should i buy?? -
"The top left side are super hot to touch.."
Is it too hot ?
I read somwhere that some the heat on the left side comes from the HD, has anyone tried replacing the "left" disk with an ssd ? -
To some of you guys having the screen lock up when gaming, have you tried updating the BIOS?
To others: Yes, the Envy runs hot. Get over it. Either buy a notebook cooler or deal with it. Or, call HP and tell them how their engineers are morons for having the CPU and GPU cooled by one fan. The laptop works! At least for me. Use the 9 cell battery when gaming to help the laptop ventilate. And to the other person complaining about the whine, I wouldn't actually label the laptop as a defect just because of that. If it works, it works. My AC adapter makes funny noises. But you know what? So did the AC adapter for my old Gateway P-7811FX and it still worked without issues for the last 2 years and still works today.
Furthermore, read the thread before posting. The Search button is your friend. No need to continuously beat a dead horse. -
its very simple to solve, this heat issue is. go to your home depot or find a block of wood laying around the size u need, and lift the back of the laptop with it.
-
yea, that is why I was hesitant about sending it for an RMA as they might have just sent the machine back as they wouldn't found anything wrong with it.
That's the not point. I can live with it, just makes me sad as I've spend about $1400 on this thing and my Vaio has never done that. I understand that it is just the way this laptop sad, for $1400 you just don't expect it to have these issues. -
Loving my Envy 17! I've had it about 3 months now and it's been perfect. One question though....how do I get to safe mode with no hot keys?
-
go to start
type msconfig.exe
go to boot tab
click on Safe Boot
Click Ok
Restart Windows
Once you are done in Safe Mode
Reverse the process. -
That is kind of what I had in mind. I know it would get hot, but to the point where it locks up the computer is unfair. I have the 9 cell battery which raises the laptop, which helps with cooling. But even then the laptop crashes when gaming.
Well I'm returning it. I just think the cooling could be better. I liked the laptop, but the heat getting in the way of my gaming is a downer. I'm returning it and I already placed an order for an Alienware m17x. Moving up from 5850 to 5870 in crossfire. This laptop was awesome for gaming, especially since it was so cheap, but can't stand the lockups. The laptop runs fine if heavy gaming is avoided. But if you plan on doing serious gaming, look into a laptop cooler. I can't possibly imagine hooking this up in eyefinity configuration with the lid closed. I can just see it now... locking up every hour or so.
Oh well, good luck everybody! -
I wonder if it is possible to liquid cool this baby? lol
Give it a shower or something when it gets to hot. -
My good friend purchased a HP Envy 17 from Amazon.com
Sadly his has a wobble, but everything else is good.
To solve the problem we taped a penny to the right side foot.
Yeheey!!! no more wobble. -
hey guys! quick question....does any1 have any information on using raid zero on the envy 17s? i feel like the bios settings are quite limited....any feedback is greatly appreciated. thanks again!
-
U can't there is no option.
-
if you hit esc during bootup, press F10, you should be able to switch the configuration of the F keys around.
i don't think that the setting takes effect until you've booted into the OS.
i currently set my f keys as primary, and other functions using fn -
Hello,
I recently go my Envy 17 from HP (didn't know about the great Amazon deal). Everything seems to be fine, there is a very small "wobble" but nothing I care about. My system has the 640G HD and no BlueRay. Overall this this is great, I don't think it is quite the MacBookPro level but it is probably the best Win laptop out there (for a lot less $$).
I got a 60G SSD and the secondary HD caddy and I have moved the original HD to the secondary spot and installed the SSD into the primary. WOW! This baby boots up in less than 10 seconds. Very snappy. Of course the clean install of Win7 helps too . . . .
Anyway, I thought I did all the clean install procedures from the forum but now I still have an ! in Device Manager under "Other Devices" listed as "PCI Simple Communications Controller".
Everything seems to be working (trackpad, wireless, video, CD drive, sound) so I'm not sure what is missing. Interestingly I moved the original 640 to the secondary spot and the system still boots off the SSD. So I can still see all the original stuff on the HD. I was going to format it but there is a folder called "drivers" that seems to have all the softpacs that I downloaded from the HP site earlier. I am browsing around it but I wanted to drop a note in this forum to see if anybody had the same issue.
Thanks,
BradmanOH -
Just ran the MEI subdirectory driver installer and the ! went away (Intel Management Engine Interface). Not sure what it does but I like not having !'s in my device manager

Question about hard drive options:
A couple of days ago, there was the option to select a 7200 rpm 750GB hard drive, with no price difference from 750GB 5400 rpm. Then the 7200 rpm disappeared, but still is there for the Envy 14, with only ten dollar difference between it and the 5400 rpm. I'm wondering if it's a mistake, do they really make a 750GB that's 7200 rpm, and if so, why is it an option for the Envy 14 and not the 17?
Also, if they leave only the 640GB 7200 rpm as the largest single drive option, is it really a 7200 rpm? Not a 5400 rpm? Can anyone out there with a 640GB 7200 rpm tell me what is the manufacturer and model number of this drive, so I can look up and verify if it's a 7200 rpm? thank you -
I spent some time tooling around my Envy 17 today and had a question regarding the temperature that it's running at while idle. I've searched through this thread and reviewed several posts with CPUID pics posted and became worried in how much higher mine were. I'm hoping to get some feedback from the community as to whether my laptop is running too hot or the temps are within "normal" operating range. The high temps were a result of running the 3dMark utility. Here are the specs to my Envy 17:
Win7 Home Pro
i7-720
640GB @ 7200 rpm
8 GB
6 cell battery

i find it amuzing that a comparably equipped dv7tse is somewhat more expensive that what an envy17 can be had for. given the spectrum of problems ive heard and seen, along with experience with customer service ... hp is going down the wrong path and its gonna bite them eventually because they are spending thier money on ceo's and buying companies while thier products are doing badly. coctail for disaster.

Can anyone tell me why HP would provide a dual drive on the Envy 17 (one mechanical and one ssd) and not install the basic system on the ssd? Operational speed is the goal - not storage speed. This doesn't make sense.
Has anyone switched your system over to the ssd. And if so, how? -
Seems that the 750 GB 7200rpm hard drive is available for the Envy 14 but not the 17. Doesn't make sense.
Can someone with the 640 GB 7200 rpm configuration confirm if that is indeed a single drive not 2 320s? Because the preconfigured Envy 17 1010nr has 2 320s. see here: HP ENVY 17-1010NR Notebook PC | HP® Official Store
I want to make sure I get a single drive!!!
Someone with 640 cto please confirm if you have a single drive or 2 320s. thanks
