Yeah that's what I suspected. That would explain if the CPU uses a lot of Turbo mode then both temps get higher pretty quick. Although I don't really know if the Turbo mode raises the temps really high compared to "normal" use - my guess only.

got a problem using the HDMI port on my envy - anyone else had any problems? When I connect it up my external monitor just flickers on momentarily once every minute or so - I can't get a constant picture

Hi guys.
I'm having the same overheating issue as other people here. And I want to solve it, so, having also nature of researcher, I've taken some screwdrivers, downloaded service manual and tried to see all by myself. Yes, the problem partially is what the machine has the same shared heatpipe and radiator for both GPU and CPU with system board capacitors. Well, actually there are two heatpipes, but they are joined under the radiator. But service manual shows us two pictures of a bit different heatsink design, having two radiators and three heatpipes. Plus, there are airholes in the butt end of the machine's body, on the top-left side, right next to the left display hinge, and they are closed inside of the body by the piece of plastic, a plug with a holding screw. So, our machine is designed to have two radiators and obviously more than one shared heatpipe, but somehow it has what it has.
I've removed the plug closing extra airholes considering that it'll help to improve the air intake, also removed the optical drive because I never use it and it's zz-zzzzzzz sound annoys me very much.
Now I have 6-8°C colder machine in idle / office mode no matter what videocard I'm using and certainly more overheat-resistant machine while playing Skyrim on hi prefs (about an hour of playing without overheat shutdown). But when highly loaded it works on the edge and only because it's winter
.
My next step is to change thermal paste on both CPU and GPU to a trusted one and thermal pad to a copper one (by the way, as far as I saw, there was a thermal pad on the chipset capacitors, but there was no thermal pad on the GPU, heatsink is attached directly, so the service manual lies again). If the change of thermal interface will not be enough (the fan and the radiator still can be too weak to dissipate the heat of all sources) then I guess I'll need some metalwork to do. At least the body has a free space inside where the second radiator was designed to be.
And yes, I'm using a cooler pad, it doesn't help much, but still. 3-4°C are it's best insert.
P.S. I hate HP never updating their video drivers builds so I've once found a man here leshcat blog IT Tips & Tricks . Now and after some weeks of testing on my machine he makes builds supporting our Envy 17-2XXX very well except Fn+F2-F3 when running on ATI. -
If you want to disable Intel Turbo Boost without using ThrottleStop, go into power options "proccessor power management -> maximum processor state" and set it to 99%.
-
Thanks for the hint! But I need Throttlestop anyway to have full CPU speed with Coolsense set to max.

If anyone who owns the 2nd gen Envy needs a 2nd caddy kit please PM me. I currently own one that I have yet to use and will never use. I decided to wait for the Ivy Bridge version of the Envy and so I'm either going to return it, sell it, or throw it away.
Of course I'd prefer either of the first 2 options and if a member of NBR needs it I'm willing to sell it at a fair price. Just contact me whenever.... -
Anyone know how to boot from a drive installed in the second bay?
-
Im brand new and unable to pm yet, but I would like to get the 2nd caddy kit from you if possible.
-
You live in the US?
-
I think thermal paste is indeed missing from my laptop reading the above posts.
I'd be willing to take apart my laptop and fix the issue myself, I'm just concerned I might screw up. -
Make sure to download the service manual...it gives you step by step on how to take the machine apart. Take your time and you will be fine...
Make sure to use Artic Silver...

Please help me, I have installed windows 7 to the first partition and i need to install another windows 7 or windows server 2008 r2 (this os's kernel is like windows 7 kernel) to the second partition but it said that windows cannot be installed to this dynamic partition i tested other partitions (2,3 and 4) but the problem exists . I know that this problem is because of raid 0 and if i could loading raid drivers by flash disk the problem would be solved but could not found raid drivers that windows installation DVD could detect . is there anyone who has made multiboot like that i need ?
-
I'm really fed up with my laptop. Overheating all the time. I don't know what to do and I think I sometime I will be so angry so as to throw out of the window or something >_>. Help!?

Have you thought about talking to HP. Perhaps their repair facility can repaste it for you...Overheating should be taken care of in your warranty
-
There is not anyone who could solve this important problem
-
If you can solve the issue with RAID drivers...you want the F6 install disk. You can extract to a flash drive and install during OS installation...does that help?
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...hnology&OSFullname=Windows+Vista*+32&lang=eng -
Thank you so much but the issue exists please test it yourself, when you want to install another windows 7 to another partition the installation dvd next button turned off and say that damn error message (windows cannot install to this partition because this is dynamic ...) I put the rapid storage drivers to a flash and load them and refresh drives list but the next button is turned off yet and cannot continue installation . did you install another windows with multiboot to this notebook ?
-
The only partition for installing windows is the first partition , all partitions are primary and have not problem and windows installation detects all of them but cannot continue installation at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
No I did not. I did a dual boot on my older laptop that had ONE disc drive in it. Basically I partitioned the drive before the install...so I had C: at 100 GB and D: at 300 GB. On my C partition, I had Windows Vista. On D, I installed Windows 7 (partition D was empty when I installed). The installation actually did a nice job and gave me a boot manager on bootup. Supposedly, you can install another OS to the same partition as your existing OS, but I only see problems down the road with that. What does your partition structure look like right now?
-
I have updated the Bios to F.17 but nothing ......
-
Can you partition the drive in Control Panel? Set aside a partition for the new OS.
-
no I have not any problem without raid config, this is because of raid . my partition structure is like this:
C: about 450 GB with windows 7 64bit ultimate installed
D: 450
E: 450
F: 550
all of them are primary and partitioned by windows 7 first installation i have another system partition about 100MB that windows made it . -
I will be taking it to HP Greece this week.
I hope they will do a good job determining the problem and if needed, repaste it.Last edited: Dec 12, 2014 -
yes I did but the problem exists i cannot allocate the new partition while installing and that error message appears for unallocated partitions too
-
When I did dual boot...C drive had data on it. D was blank. Installing Win 7 and it gave me the option where to install...I chose D...then did the install. At the end...I had a boot manager. Will Server allow the same option? If NOT...I would suggest breaking up RAID. Put Win 7 on Drive 1 and Server on Drive 2. Just seems like an awful lot of work, where it should do the dual boot deal even in raid...
-
My D is blank too . yes server allow the same option it is exactly the same as win7 but i test windows 7 instead server it has this problem too . did you used that rapid storage driver link to install your second windows and you had not my problem ?!!!
I asked it from HP but i have not any hope to them !
HP Communities - Multiboot HP envy 17 dual drive raid 0 - Enterprise Business Community -
I have raid 0 in my desktop but i have not this problem with that just load the mainboard raid controller driver and continue ...
i think that the rapid storage F6 driver you sent for me is not exactly for this notebook raid controller chipset , is there other drivers for the mainboard of this envy model ? -
At the time I did the dual boot...didn't use rapid storage manager. Sounds to me like the only way that this is gonna work is if you break up the raid. Remember...RAID 0 is striping...which basically uses both drives at the same time. Maybe that isn't possible with two drives stiped. Needs both drives to make it work...
-
That is the version I am currently running on my Envy 17 3D...but remember I am running an SSD as C and HDD as D. The version is just updated...to install...you just need the F6 drivers...then use RSM after Windows is up and running. Here is the link for the Windows Server drivers...look the same. You can look around Intel's site...the original version of RSM that shipped with the Envy was 10.1.0.1008....but the newer ones should work...
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...roductProduct=Intel®+Rapid+Storage+Technology -
please view my above post , no i'm using always raid 0 and windows 7 multiboot without any problem this is my first time i encountered a disaster problem like this with raid config !!!!!!!!
-
OK your structure is not raid you cannot config raid on one ssd and one sata drives, mine is two 1TB and is raid 0 i will not have any problem with your drives structure and you don't need raid at all because ssd is fast enough !
-
No, I don't need RAID. But for some reason, you are getting the error when attempting to install Windows Server on your second partition. If the install is like Windows 7, you should be given option for Custom install. That is where the RAID drivers would go. I run RAID on my desktop, although no dual boot. Most times, the install will fail without the F6 drivers on installation
Just read something as well. Are you installing Server from the Service Pak 1 disc? Seems that according to MS boards...there were issues with non SP 1 disks...look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2466753 -
Yes i use F6 drivers on my desktop too but why F6 drivers doesn't works on this notebook ?!
-
They should...not sure whey they would not. ICH10 controller...those are the drivers. The article I posted previously had more to do with the version of Server you are installing. Guess there were issues before SP1 with RAID. Do you have SP1?
-
yes it is sp1 and detects all partitions but cannot continue installation .
-
I think this model has serious problem in Bios or raid controller that caused this wonderful disaster !!!
-
Interesting take. Just to doublecheck. When installing Server...you choose custom. Then, during custom installation...you choose to add drivers and then have Win read the flash drive with the F6 drivers? At that point, it should tell you Intel RAID drivers for ICH10....once done with that...you should be able to continue to finish. This might be a question for Microsoft, if the progression of events doesn't work...
-
Actually HP doesn't mod the bios to do anything like that. In your bios setup...the ICH10 is assumed as a RAID controller. ON and it lets you configure RAID. OFF and it is a dual SATA port...but in both cases, AHCI is a given. There is no such thing as the old SATA non AHCI in the machine, by design. That is why it is so hard to flash firmware for SSD's while they are in the Envy. But...the RAID rom should accept the drivers. regardless of the version. Example, the RAID rom on my desktop board is 9.5, yet I run drivers 10.1...with no issues...

Thanks so much buddy for all of your helps but the only solution that seems to work was this :
Devocalypse - Install Windows 7 on a Simple Dynamic Disk (Pro and Ultimate Only)
now i'm installing windows 2008 server r2 to the second partition but i hope this doesn't destroy my windows 7 that installed to the first partition . -
Does anybody else have problems playing Blu-Ray disks? I used to be able to watch them though some films such as Tangled would stutter or freeze. But now none of my Blu-Ray or 3D disks work. DVDs still work fine but anytime I put a Blu-Ray into the slot and open PowerDVD the disk just stutter spins and PowerDVD freezes. Any ideas? I have PowerDVD 11 and the latest HP graphics drivers. I should also mentioned that things got progressively worse. 3D films that had run fine started stuttering lately and now don't work at all.
-
I just tried setting the graphics clock rate to the lowest and try to play MW3, but it still was hot as heck... I'm going to send it to HP Greece soon...

Hi guys. Do anyone of you know what HP does with the throttle issue?
Got an Envy 2100eo 2 days ago, and it got this wierd problem, that when Im gaiming/skyping/listening to music, the cpu (every core & thread) will spike to 100%, making everything, the sound the picture lagg.
Tried reisntalling the system and flashing the bios.
Now Ill contact either HP to fix it, or the reseller to get a new one, depending on the solution -
Again if anyone needs the caddy kit for the 2nd hard drive bay I have one in my possession that I will not need anymore. So if interested please feel free to PM.
-
Hey guys, I just purchased, second hand, the HP Envy 17 3D and love it. I been reading the forum for years for past laptop info and issues and love it. I just registered and wanted to say thanks....in general, but lots of good reading here.
im reading up still on updating the graphics, but i may have some questions, but for now i just wanted to stop in and say hello.
oh and SWTOR is my game of choice at the moment.

Re: Mini Displayport
Has anyone tried to connect an external monitor to the mini displayport (MDP) output? I bought a Kanex MDP6FT MDP to MDP cable (M/M 6ft) to connect to the MDP of my iMac 27" (mid-2010 that is non-Thunderbolt) so I could use the IPS panel of iMac as a secondary display. The iMac doesn't seem to sense video output from the Envy's MDP (though this cable was recommended by another purchaser for connecting to an iMac). -
Unfortunately new Intel driver 14.3.0.6 makes no difference. ENVY still locks on wifi - almost exclusively when using torrents in my case. Also tried it with a 6300 card and same problem.
Only fix is to use a USB wifi adapter. -
that really sucks.
-
I just bought a Seagate Expansion 2TB USB3 disk, works like a charm!
Now, I will take a backup and send it at HP next week. -
Very wise to do so. Hopefully they will repaste it properly and you will get a fully functional, cooler, machine back. Good luck
-
Thanks, I hope get some good temps on that after the repaste. Fortunately, the company my dad is working for has a deal with that HP reseller I'm sending it to so I will get it earlier. So I should better send it next Monday to have it fully functioning the next weekend.
I have heard other issues even about Pavilion laptops overheating. HP should probably learn more about laptop cooling that's for sure.
