Okay is anyone getting a hissing sound with headphones with their Envy 17 SB?
I've updated drivers and all but nothing.
-
I have nothing specific I need to do other than general use of my computer. My modem is in the hallway, and I don't wanna stand out there with my laptop all day
Getting a Cisco router tomorrow, and we'll see. -
Um...you mean the turbo boost that speeds the processor from 2.3 GHz to 3.4 GHz? You mean that isn't working right out of the box? Or is this something different?
-
Don't know if it's working or not, but atleast there's a driver for it that I'm unable to install. Would be nice to see if anyone else is able to.
-
TurboBoost is one of the core features of Intel's processor. SURELY it must work right out of the box without the need to install a new driver. I just don't know how/where you would go to verify what speed the processor is currently running at. I will play around when I get mine tomorrow.
-
I noticed the Envy bios has a built in memory test. Gonna run that tonight just to exclude the memory. (Kinda wish it was the memory, cause then $80 for 2x4GB of Crucial RAM would fix the entire problem
)
-
I can't wait until I get mine!!! Ugh...as of 6 hours ago, my Envy 17 3D is sitting in a "Destination Sort Facility" which is less than 15 minutes from here. Although my estimated delivery time isn't until Thursday, I'm hoping it shows up tomorrow.
-
Download the turbo boost monitor here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...ng&OSVersion=Windows 7, 64-bit*&DownloadType=
Put it on your desktop and do normal things. You should see the processor boosting frequency. The turbo boost frequency, according to an old post on HP forums:
The TurboBoost Driver is required for Intel i5 and i7 Series Processors with Integrated Graphics on them...This Driver helps in 'TurboBoost' Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) Frequancy....Intel's Core i7-720QM, i7-740QM,i7-820QM and i7-840QM Processors, do not have Integrated Graphics on them...
Hope this is helpful. Your processor should have no problem with Turbo boost as long as it is enabled in your bios -
Jeezzz....going to bed and hoping the next batch of arrivals fares better....almost sounds like a horror movie reading appoxxx, crimsoned, etc posts
-
Yea it happens very often even after booting up for a long time. I don't know what is happening. This is so annoying.
-
So, if I understand correctly...the driver that controls Turbo Boost should be already installed from the factory...and it should be enabled already in the BIOS. This program you are referring us to is just a monitor, to actually SEE the "boosting." Correct? And is this program designed to work with the 2nd generation processors as well?
-
Yes....the time of the quote was during the first generation. They had Turbo Boost v 1.0 We have Turbo Boost v 2.0. The monitor should work and when your processor is working...you will see the bar jump up and down

Working to get the full video up in HD. Sorry for the delay guys (Huh, delays, I feel like I'm HP). It's final upload quality will be in 720p (DVD quality) because the 14 minute video in 1080p is about 5 GBs and definitely exceeds the YouTube limit.
Thanks for watching and waiting.

I've got to say that I might never buy a laptop online again. I'd just buy it in person. This is just too much. Hopefully my laptop isn't flawed. I'd be doing some testing on it soon. Well 'soon' meaning if I even receive the darn thing.
-
Agreed, I'm definitely more nervous about getting my new Envy than I was a few days ago. I really hope a lot of these little issues turn out to be easily fixed (updates, etc). It seems like such an amazing computer, it would be tragic if it is plagued with issues.
-
Status: On Vehicle for Delivery!!
(I'm not going to work today.) -
KILLAJOE, if my hard drives are RAIDed Im definitely calling HP Resolutions. Luckily I have the transcript of my chat with HP reps telling me they 100% guarantee me there is no RAID 0 on the hard drives. So I pretty much have them by the b@lls and they will HAVE to give me a credit. $100 would be nice.
-
Stephan C, I'm refreshing YouTube constantly to see if the HD version of the video is up. I'm dying to see the computer's detail in HD!

Quick Question:
I found something I want for my new Envy on Amazon that is being sold by a third party vendor for a much lower price than the other well known vendor's and Amazon.com's price.
It's still through Amazon.com, but should I be careful about such a vendor? -
Just did a HD check while sleeping. Took over 4 hours. Which leads me to believe I have a motherboard fault like Killa Joe.
Could any of you be so kind as to just start the HD check and tell me what the estimated time says? (You can cancel the test immediately.
To do this, restart, press esc during the HP logo, then F2 for System Diagnostics. -
Won't be able to help you on this one til Friday, when the machine supposedly arrives here. BUT...have you called Tech support (btw...they are located in Little Rock, Arkansas). Tell them what is going on and see what their take is. I am curious about this because I want to see if their assessment for you is the same as Joe. I had not heard of a pathway issue, prior to Joe's diagnosis from TS. Here is tech's number: 866-408-5408
Don't talk about Joe's diagnosis. Just tell them what is wrong with your machine and Let them come to you with "what is wrong". Let's see if there is consistency in their way to diagnose and repair an issue... -
Great. cam121 posted that he received $100 not to RMA, so that is at least the standing credit for the RAID issue.... let's keep it updated. Thanks.
KJ
-
Ohhh, no you got it too!
As mentioned, Envy tech told me this test should not take more than 1 hour to 1.5 hours. I'd get right on this and call Envy.... This issue alone got me a huge discount on my current system.
Apoxxx, you can exchange, and now ask for the SSD/HDD combo. Keep us posted.
I agree, others should perform this test regardless of slow downs or not, just so we can get a base measure of the time it takes for this procedure.

Bobmitch, that is a brilliant and such a real life practicle way to go about this.

Got my laptop! I didn't realize how amazingly big the screen is. Wow! No flaws so far. Let test this thing.
-
Remind us of your basic specs again? CPU, HDD, RAM.
Waiting to hear the good news that your laptop is perfect! -
Definitely do that HD check thing that Apoxxx and KJ did.
I'm really hoping you don't have any issues. Mine is drawing closer too...April 20th will be here before I know it. -
I was about to suggest that Apoxxx. Before I tried to buy an Envy, I tried to upgrade my old Toshiba. Thought buying a 7200 RPM HDD and more memory would make it usable for work. If both memory chips that I bought were installed, it behaved exactly like you described with your envy. When I removed either module, the laptop was stable. I never did get both memory modules to work in that laptop and I ended up RMA'ing one module back to the company. Good luck!
Awhile ago (~2004) I bought an HP laptop from Circuit city. The processor got so hot, it burned a hole through the bottom of the plastic casing. Whether you buy online or not, there is always the possibility of having problems. In my case, Circuit City didn't even want to help me. At first they were going to force me to send it back to HP for warranty service but at that time, I was told I would be without a laptop for several months. Since this was my work laptop (and I was self employed at the time), I couldn't be without one. I convinced Circuit City to give me a store credit. Bought my Toshiba which is still with me to this day (albeit useless and slow now - but at least no hole in the bottom of the laptop!!!).
Other than the stupid RAID0 stripe across the HDD+SSD, I received a perfectly working Envy. I'm really sad that I have to send back a perfectly working unit b/c HP won't work with me on an alternative solution to my remorse over the SSD pricing.
It's unfortunate but lemons do exist. In this day and age of mass production and low profit margins, as consumers we are saying we are OK with dealing with lemons as long as lemon laws protect our investment. They key is to chalk the first unfortunate experience up to bad luck and try to move forward. If your lemon is replaced with another lemon, then you can be really mad and complain to your hearts content. -
CAM121, you said you have buyers remorse over buying the SSD+HDD? Did you pay full price or did you have any type of coupon? I got 25% off the laptop so for me the dual hard drives was basically for free and then some.
-
The thing is that I can't be without a laptop for 3 weeks again, so if HP wanna fix this they send me a new one and I return this one when I get it. It's their fault afterall.
-
Looks like I will pick up mine at FedEX across from my office around noon. I believe I have the same drive as you, so I will run a test if nobody else has done it by then.

Working off my Envy now. Received it miraculously. It was supposed to have been shipped to my home address instead of my university's address, but FedEX decided to not reroute the package even after confirming that it had been rerouted. So I had to pick it up quickly before leaving for the airport! Everything is working fine, except I get a hissing noise when I have my headphones in. I think this was happening to someone else. Are there any solutions? Btw, I'm actually writing this from the airport

Here's my specs
2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
1GB Radeon(TM) HD 6850M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI]
6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
---
The box it came in had no damage
I read somewhere on here about a Blu-Ray problem with inconsistencies of noises, mines plays silently no weird sounds coming out of it.
3D pops out great like it should.
I have no internet as of yet, (been without a laptop for 2 yrs) Wifi around here is all secured so I couldn't check.
No scars or damage on the laptop itself.

I wouldn't know where to go to check about hdd. I'm not familiar with that stuff. I'm sorry if I missed any more questions. I'm on a Blackberry. -
My Envy's in my hands!! I went home and met FedEx. Now, I'm headed back to work to enjoy it on our 100 Mbps connection!!
-

I plugged in my Beats Studio headphones and have not heard any hissing sounds. -
So glad...now we just have to wait for Hyperboled to catch up!!!
-
Regarding the bluray drive does it make any noticeable sound when you first boot up the notebook?
-
Well I didn't have a blanket % coupon like some people. I got a straight $300 off plus my EPP savings. I then received an extra $100 for my troubles with the broken stripe. Overall I paid just over $2300 for the max configuration. I discovered that I could forgo the SSD option and save $630. I could then buy the SAME Intel SSD for about $300. This would leave with the same envy with a slightly larger but slower second HDD and save $300 on top of the same savings I originally got.
$300 is a lot of cash, too much to just let it go because of the inconvenience of sending the laptop back which is why I originally said another $200 off would probably make me happy. I'd be willing to eat a $100 savings in order to keep my current laptop, but not $300. I also now have the option of paying $500ish for a Gen3 SSD if I'd prefer to eat up some of my savings on better technology.
Overall though, I think I will just buy the Intel SSD, use it for about a year until the current GEN SSD's catch up (maybe lower pricing too), then give this SSD to my gf and buy a new Gen3 (or 4) SSD. -
I know I'm probably beating a dead horse here - BUT...if you didn't purchase the in home warranty - maybe it would be a great time to call and add that on to your system and have them get their butts out there and fix it, this way you won't HAVE to be without it at all. I'd just verify that the in home warranty is refundable if you ultimately decide not to keep the machine. Electronic components fail, it's just a fact of life. Worth every penny of the $200 to have peace of mind to not have to hand your system off and almost without a doubt, they will have to pay you a visit more than once over the next three years...... good luck getting it worked out, sounds frustraaating!!
-
Hi,
Thanks for thinking of me. I am hanging on to every word. I called the resolutions number yesterday and was told that my system would be built on April 18 as stated in my "delayed" email. I pointed out that others who have placed their orders after mine have had their orders shipped. She offered no explanation other than "product constraints" which I guess can mean anything. Maybe I am being punished for calling them early on regarding the raid issue after cam121 reported it. Or maybe they are walking my system through the process to make certain I get a "perfect" system. HaHa.
And thanks to all for posting your impressions. So nice to hear that some systems are being received without apparent issues; gives us hope. Also helps when you include your specifications especially when there are problems.
Best wishes to all. -
New router in place. Cisco this time, so here goes nothing
If anyone could do the HD test I'd be very glad. I know one rep told Killa Joe that it's supposed to take 1 hour, but I really don't trust they always know what they are saying. -
Thank you slotti, I'd appreciate that. It only takes around 1min, the estimated time comes up right away, and if that time is around 3h 50m to 4h then mine is working as it should.

Alright you guys there a few changes in the Envy 17 SB and the Previous Envy 17.
1. The Trackpad is slightly different. It has a raised ridge where the two buttons are, it's quite nice.
2. The trackpad's texture has been changed to be a bit more rougher instead of smoother.
3. The trackpad seems considerably more responsive and smoother.
4. The trackpad is not as badly raised as my previous 17 SB.
5. The bag shipped with the Envy 17 has changed, it's is a better quality bag. The material has changed. The legacy Envy 17 came with a stretchy micro fiber suede like bag. The new Envy 17 SB comes with a less stretchy bag, of unknown material. It feels much nicer and has better "HP Envy 17" logo that looks to be embossed vs textured on the legacy Envy 17. The stitching is better too.
Lastly and more importantly the LCD seems to have changed, the legacy Envy 17 has slightly different colors/viewing angles compared to the SB. I think the legacy Envy 17 has slightly less black crush.
The keyboard seems identical in shape/size/backlight/tactile feel.
Everything else seems identical. -
New router didn't help at all, no change.
It times out, then locks up. Guess this one is going back then, but not before I get my replacement.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
Just picked mine up at FedEx. Box was actually heavily dented. Inside looks fone though. A little gap in between the case and the keyboard encasing on the lower right corner, but it's no more than 1/16" so I don't worry about it at this time.
I am charging the battery right now...if the LED was white, right when you plugged it in, does that mean it came fully charged?
Don't have time to really start the initial boot up before around noon (PDT).
Apoxxx, I will run the HDD test today, but it miht be towards the evening.
I'll keep you posted. -
The support details on System Diagnostics say that the hard disk test may take an hour or more depending on the size and speed of the Hard Drive.
Would this hard disk test be an appropriate test for a solid state drive? -
That is an
understatement! I have some interesting news....well not really because you know HP already...I'm on the line with them now...will post about my converstaion after I hang up with them...stay tuned....

Apoxxx, I'm glad to hear you are attempting a replacement! Do try to get a hefty credit for your troubles. Best of luck.

I would like to raise a vote to make a new thread named:
"HP Envy 17 & 17 3D Sandy Bridge (2xxx) series) Savings Lounge and HP quarterly losses"

Ok, I am a little bit lost for words, but I'll just say what I spoke to HP about. I called Envy tech to let them know about the SSD/HDD in RAID 0...that my Envy is still in "production" and was hoping they can catch it on time to make sure mine does not have the RAID 0 config. Envy tech switched me to Home & Office. Home & Office first of all asked me, "What is RAID 0?" Huh? Really?
I know they are not tech. support but they never heard of it. So he asked his supervisor...he heard of it, but told the sales rep that drives of different size
CANNOT BE RAIDED 0.
While still on the phone I Googled RAID 0 different drive size...sure enough.... Standard RAID levels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You can RAID 0 different drive size, but look what happens.... As some of you guys are experiencing.... You see 320GB... Well, the info here states:
A RAID 0 can be created with disks of differing sizes, but the storage space added to the array by each disk is limited to the size of the smallest disk. For example, if a 120 GB disk is striped together with a 100 GB disk, the size of the array will be 200 GB.
That is why you guys have the 320GB!!! 160GB is the limiting size of the SSD, so 160x2=320GB. Wow, I get some education today.
Anyway, I asked them to transfer me to Resulotions..... The guy I spoke with told me they did get a call a month ago about this issue and told their engineers...he promised they fixed it....but you guys are still reporting a RAID 0 config... So who is lying? HP...wow
He gave me a guarantee with his phone number, that mine won't have this problem...well, let's see...
