dlleno, I think the tech updates are still a good idea, maybe for a bit longer. You might not want to post it every couple days, maybe once every Friday and until the end of April? Don't ask me why Aprillol, maybe I figure by the end of April many more will have the Envy 17 3D SB in their hands. Up to you of course, since you are doing it for free, and many thanks. The color coding is very sweet stuff, ha.

I would like to point out that HP has lowered the baseline price point on the Envy 17 3D from $1649.99 to $1599.99. I talked to customer support and they told me they would credit me $50 after my replacement was shipped.

thats great feedback -- and the longer period between posts should work out to be more appropriate here than in the other thread. over there, I'd post an update and 6 replies later somone would ask a question already answered
who knows, soon we will be "waiting for Huron River Envy 17..." lol -

HP is soooooooo messing with our heads, but it was cool that they are crediting back the $50 for those who are now calling about it....

Ha, well, last 2 orders worked out nice, a day earlier, so maybe this will be sooner too. Hold on.
KJ -
Maybe this will make you feel better that you're not the only one? LOL And my patience is running out. I am planning to call and complain the moment it reaches March 18th if they still haven't ship it on that day -

Say, is this Envy using a "one piece" trackpad. (no separate buttons for right and left mouse click)?

I'm calling them NOW!!

lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Really sorry if I'm being lazy here (don't see references in several pages), but is a definitive battery time estimate available on the 17 SB dual/quad core refreshes? I'm a whimp: better battery life would be my main reason for replacing the E14 I have, and love, and I'm trying to decide if I need to rush and sell it, or just enjoy the excellent quality one I have and wait 6 more months. Thanks.

The "old" advice/popular opinion was to never clone from magnetic to SSD due to partition alignment / OS driver / Trim issues and probably a host of other stuff that I'm not remembering or simply don't understand.
With the advent of modern disk image tools that take care of the alignment for you and SSD tweak tools, people are much more comfortable lately doing this kind of thing.
I am in a bit of a unique circumstance, due the nature of my job, an agreement I have with my employer and agreements my employer has made with vendors I have access to legitimate, legal keys/installers for software from a number of major players, even for personal use on my personal computing devices. This includes Microsoft. Personal desktops I build from scratch, and notebooks I order completely bare-bones in terms of software and then just install whatever I want. So I ordered my Envy with Home Premium and I will install Ultimate on my new SSD.
From what I have seen of HP's recent builds, and the build of the Envy, the OS install is downright decent and bloatware free. It's in keeping of my theory about HP, that at the core they basically WANT to do the right thing, sometimes they just can't becuase they are this lumbering giant mess of bureaucracy, or they otherwise just take a damn long time getting there. I'd be fine with a stock HP OS install, or an anytime windows key upgrade, but I'm still a geek at heart and find some perverted odd joy in installing my own OS, even when the benefit is marginal at best, as it is in this case. -
Does anyone know how to play those 3D demos (NBA All-Star 2010 and Kung Foo Panda 2) that came pre-loaded? I uninstalled all Cyberlink software but I read somewhere that HP MediaSmart DVD, which also came pre-installed) can play those .mcv files. I tried it but it didn't support those files.

Ok....so back to the ram question.... for those who currently have their Envy 17 3D SB..... were you able to verify the ram speed? Did HP install the 1333MHz ram or the 1600MHz ram? I just Googled 8GB of 1600MHz ram for a laptop to see what the prices are...just in case HP only is using the 1333 MHz ram in the supposed 1600MHz bus.
Anyway, not sure, but this seems like a good deal maybe? If so, will these fit into our Envy 17 3D?

From what I was told, If you ordered the Envy 17 3D with the 28XX processor you should have 1600MHZ Ram in the unit...
Would love to have this confirmed...
Withthe 2630QM it will have 1333mhz as the 2630QM does not support 1600mhz ram...
You can mix speeds when you upgrade it will just clock it down ( I would save your money and just get 1333 mhz)... and yes it is ok if you only replace one chip... they don't ahve to match -
Hi guys, I just ordered ENVY 17 on 03/12 (old feature) which has :
• i5-480M Dual Core Processor (2.66GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz.
• 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI]
• 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 640GB 7200RPM HD
..........with $400 coupon code.........
So, should I return it to get the refreshed one?
• 2nd generation Intel(R) Dual Core(TM) i5-2410M (2.3 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
• 1GB Radeon(TM) HD 6850M GDDR5 Graphics
• 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 1TB 5400RPM HD
-------no coupon on this one T_T-----------
Is it worth? And, Does the refreshed one have CoolSense technology? I didn't see anyone talks about it ?!? -
In regards to all the shipping posts...
As far as when a unit is shipped and the timing, I can tell you I am 99% sure it has to do with the configuration you ordered it with...
Sometimes a processor is constrained so they know they can still hit the ship date so they don't move the ship date out yet a unit with a different processor or part will ship earlier even though it was ordered later because that units parts where not constrained...
It all goes back to supply chain... When I ordered my pc it shipped and I actually got notice of it shipping almost two days after it has already shipped... so some of your PCs are probably in transit... I hope -

Has anybody from the UK been able to place an order for a Sandy Bridge Envy?
I currently have a Dell on order but my true preference is for the Envy. As usual, the UK seems to be getting a raw deal cos I don't see Sandy bridge Envy's on the website. But...I suspect some intrepid souls either may have been able to place an early order or have a good idea of when Sandy Bridge Envy's will appear in the UK.
Any constructive comments will be well received. -

what is your ship date? -

I placed mine on 3/8/11 for the 2820 also..... The estimated build date is 3/29/11..... now its only been 9 days............
20 minutes ago I received an email from HP....
MY ORDER IS READY TO SHIP@#@#$@!!!!$#@%%Estimated to arrive to me by next Tuesday March 22, 2011.
How is that even possible? Only 9 days to build my custom PC?Is this normal? I'm just hoping its not a refurb..... I am so sceptical, lol.
Anyway, I can't wait to find out about the ram speed.... I do hope HP Nate is right and the 2820 will have the 1600MHz
KJ -
Looks like we're in the same boat!
Estimated build date: 3/28
Shipping notification: 3/17
Estimated delivery: 3/22
Beyond excited...in fact I may have shrieked a bit when I saw the e-mail. Just a bit though -
Its just my first Envy 17 3D first gen took a good month.... how is it they are quick on production this time? Just wondering.

I don't think HP would be stupid enough to sell refurbs at new on their top-line stuff -
But think about this. If we accept that the XMP profiles (inside the RAM) signal the processor re: the speed at which they can run, and noting what HP is saying, namely, "Support for DDR3 1600MHz RAM" and "available on select i7 processors only" I think the following suggestions are credible:
1. the system has been tested and qualified to run at 1600MHz. It has to be; otherwise HP wouldn't say they supported 1600 MHz RAM
2. The 2820 will talk (to the RAM) at 1600MHz when the installed RAM is capable of it. That is evident from the way XMP works.
3. HP is telling us about a configuration (1600MHz RAM) that is not yet available and won't be available unless you also choose the 2820 processor.
4. We don't yet know what this configuration will cost, i.e. if it will be $200 more, on top of the $350 for the 2820 itself.
are there no 2820 Envy 17s in the wild yet? when the first ones arrive, someone needs to download and run the hwinfo tool (or something equivalent) and see what speed the memory is running -
-
Yeah, hope you and the sales lady are wrong....oh do I hope....but anyway, I've been looking around for a deal just in case..... not sure if this will work with our Envy 17 3D SB...any ideas? I'm not sure what is this Non-ECC, Unbuffered deal means...and if our system takes it....
Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB PC12800 DDR3 RAM - 1600MHz, 2x4096MB, Non-ECC, Unbuffered $109.99 does not seem so bad.

Is this inferior or something, just wondering since you stated that "this is all they have...." I figure if it works it works. Thanks SpartanJet.

Did you guys order from phone or different party? -

I ordered by phone...you can haggle the best deals that way. Good luck.

Okay, everybody. I have another dumb question...or have I reached my limit for the week? This might be addressed in a different thread completely, but with 8GB of RAM, will a 4GB flash drive using ReadyBoost be of any use? Would I notice any performance increase? LOL. Or should I just not even bother. LOL
-
wow $99 for 16000MHz RAM thats not bad, assuming this is the right stuff. Kingston's memory configuration tool doesn't show the Envy 17-2000 but that will come. Anxious to see what HP will charge for 1600 MHz RAM -- Right now the 6GB option is $60 cheeper than the 8GB option, so you can do the math: $40 to upgrade from HP 1333MHz RAM to after market 8GB 1600MHz RAM!
that would be sweet.
...and HP's 6GB RAM isn't wasted. you'll need that to stuff back into the laptop if you ever have to send it back.
I'm running after market RAM in my Dv8000t right now (Kingston) and it has worked flawlessly for five years. I don't even think I have the original memory that shipped from HP. But I did exactly the same thing: I bought after market memory because HP did not ship the fastest RAM available at the time -- so I configured my DV8000t with the smallest amount of RAM possible, and got the good stuff from Kingston, and I'd go back to them again in a heartbeat. -
iwantanenvy...
I have to tell you. I disabled very very few startup items on the machine...and when you check resources...machine only showed a memory load of 24%. With 8GB of ram...you have more than enough. I cannot see how ANY flash drive using Readyboost is gonna increase your performance. Unless you purchase something like the Patriot Extreme series...I don't think that would be money well spent. Right now...with i7...4 GB of Ram is adequate...6 is the sweet spot...and 8 is futureproofing...
My 2 cents -
FWIW I spent a fair amount of time looking yesterday, the only 1600Mhz sodimms I can find anywhere are the Kingstons being already discussed in the thread.
My Envy is going back (I just can't live with my stuck pixel), my re-order will be for the 2820. Based on projected ship dates I'm going to be about three weeks behind the curve. So I'll let you guys get this all sorted out for me while I sit and wait -
Hey guys, I reall yodnt NEED a new laptop but Im a gadget freak and I'd LIKE to have the new Envy 17 3d with SB. Now, having said that, for that reason I will only buy it if the deal is too good to pass up, meaning Id need the $400 off. OF course I dont have the coupon but do you think if I called HP and ordered over the phone and told them what I just told you theres ANY shot they might just take $400 off? Its the only way I'll buy it because I dont wanna spend $1700+. But for $1300 I'd do it.

Also totally useless side discussion for anyone interested: Did you notice that the display can do 96Hz?
Any video geeks want to play around and try to figure out if there are differences in the pulldown of 24fps media at 96 vs 120? -
I recommend calling until someone budges and says yes.
