DO i need anything other than a bare 2.5in ssd to install in primary slot and move the original hdd to secondary (so I can have boot on ssd and files on hdd)??????? I have asked like 500 times so far and not one answer. Is it a stupid question!?@!@? If it is, Id rather ask stupid questions now than when I get the laptop and find out i have to order something from amazon and wait couple more days as a result.

I am seriously wondering why no one answers this question? I considered everything... maybe the envy 17 has only one hdd slot maybe very stupid question maybe only I see the posts I make maybe I dont exist in the matrix I am so confused.

I'm not sure where to purchase the bracket/caddy, just don't buy this one Hard Drive Caddy & Cable for HP Envy 17 (also works with SSD) [HP-ENVY-17] - $38.55 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks since other say it's not compatible with 3rd gen. Envy. I read that some customers just use velcro to secure the drive for now.

I just spoke to a HP Agent & she adviced to call HP Parts dept.
www.hp.com/buy/parts or by phone at 1-800-227-8164 between 8:30 am - 6pm EST, Monday thru Friday. They are also open on Saturdays from 7:00AM – 7:00PM Central Standard Time.

Let me know if you ever find the correct part, when I get my new Envy 17 I also will be adding a SSD.

Wait who said that the kit from newmodeus does NOT work? Has this been verified? And if so where can one find the right caddy kit? This is frustrating. I have the one linked above cuz I originally was gonna get the old Envy....

    $40 for a caddy -.-

looks like im taping my ssd in the bay 1 and putting the hdd and caddy in bay 2.

Does ssd have to be in bay 1 for it to be boot drive? and im not gonna worry about set up until I get the laptop because I have no clue how to make an ssd the boot drive and stuff.
Im gonna worry about the hardware now and setup later.

You can install windows and boot from either slot, but the first one is your only Sata3 port... so i recommend using that if you get a nice SSD.

I had both cages already, but when i was in there working it seemed that with some velcro and little stick on rubber pads it would be just fine for a SSD without the cage.

Thanks for the info. Guess I have to figure out what to do with the caddy I currently posess. I doubt I'll be able to return it and get my money back....

And ironman you're saying the current caddy kit is $40? That sounds a lil higher but if it's the right thing then fine....

Didn't we settle the whole "SATA 3" argument a while back? Aren't both of em SATA 3?

It's almost comical how I don't even own this laptop yet and it's giving me a headache...

Due to all the helpful and informative post I bit the bullet and placed my order- HP ENVY 17 customizable Notebook PC Order in production
(Estimated to ship on February 7, 2012)
Reading through the posts I've come across some things to look for when I first receive ie- sound issues. I also took a look at the bloatware removal & Win 7 guide. I've been piecing this together but is there any master list of what I should do/look for first upon receipt? thanks

There is no master list. In fact, you shouldn't even think in such terms. Reason being, what is good for one may not be good or applicable to another.

The very basic thing to do is to make recovery discs and back up the swsetup folder. That's really it.

And of course make sure everything works. But that goes without saying.

Well I don't really know if it's settled, we have two different answers in this thread.

Based on what I see here (if it's actually an HM65 chipset inside the new Envy) : Intel® HM65 Express Chipset

There should be two Sata III ports supported. Maybe the second is used for the mSata port then?

As for the caddy I own the 2nd gen one and might try to make it fit some way in my future 3rd gen Envy (although it is reported it doesn't). Otherwise that'll be just tape for my SSD!

I have no idea but perhaps you are right. I just wish we could get a clear answer once and for all on the matter. One person says yes and the other says no. if I had an Envy and knew which test to run to determine the answer I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I guess its just as well that I'm waiting till the Ivy Bridge refresh. Maybe they'll change the chip-set to one that has SATA 3 for all the ports....one can hope.

As an owner I can confirm it has two 2,5" SATA3 drive places. Mine (and it seems all) have two sata cables for the drives although only one caddy and that's the one the original HDD sits in. If fitting an SSD and a mechanical drive you could just put in some foam etc. to keep the SSD from rattling around and securing the HD in the caddy.

It does also have an mSata. That's the one that looks like a mini PCIe and that one is par mSata specification only SATA2.

Hope this clear up things. I have a Corsair Force GT 240 GB SSD drive in mine (no other HDD or mSata) and I definitely sees write and especially read speeds way beyond Sata2 although not quite up to Force GT advertizements but that can be due to a lot of things which I'll not got into details with here.

Just got my Envy 17 3D (3rd gen), and it's awesome. I added an SSD drive, and got everything else working. I have one issue I haven't been able to figure out:

I'm coming from an older HP dv7 that had a VGA out. It was connected to an older Sceptre 24" monitor that went up to 1900x1200, and only has VGA or DVI connections.

I got a displayport to VGA adapter from monoprice, but it's only recognizing the monitor as 1920x1080. I didn't realize how much I liked that extra 120 pixels :(.

Any ideas how I could get it to recognize the resolution? I'm guessing it's something to do with the displayport to vga adapter?

    Thanks.

I think you contradicted yourself there... because without 2 SATA3 SSDs in there how could you confirm that?

If everyone wants to know FOR SURE, well you would need to have 2 SATA3 SSDs in there simultaneously each with a potential speed higher than the sata2 spec. Guess what, we are in luck because i have that running right here!

If anyone would like to show otherwise, please do.

Also, here is the Msata for anyone interested. I have all 3 in there.

Well I want the Envy 15, thought about trying it out and then deciding whether or not the orange bothered me, but I think I'm just going to avoid wasting my time and HP's time and just get an Envy 17.

So... as soon as I get my tax refund (probably Feb. 1st) I'll likely put in an order.

Question: does the 160hz display come standard? I was fooling around on the HP site yesterday and couldn't get the option for 160hz display to show up in the config menu.

It's 120Hz and it's only on the Envy 17 3D (comes standard - in fact due to 3D).

@lsramair: yup, you seem to prove otherwise. I don't really mind since I would use SATA III only for my SSD. But that's always a good thing to know...

Do you think the upgrade is worth it if I'm not planning on using the 3D option at all? Just the screen on its own merits?

I have to say, I'm impressed at the battery life on the 17 3D considering it's a 6 cell.

Mine is lasting 4+ hours with:
    • Battery settings at High Performance
    • Laptop Screen at 65% Brightness
    • Running 2 screens at 1080p
    • Listening to music and using the internet
    • Running a full system virus scan
    • Charging an iPad 2 and iPod touch at the same time.

Has anyone else tried to use a Sony flash card via an SD adapter in the SD slot? I cannot get it to work to save my life, and it sucks. I have to waste battery power on my camera to get my photos off now.

Just to be a bit more detailed, it ended up lasting around 4 hours and 10 minutes before flat out dying. This is with everything I mentioned above.

If I am using just the laptop on recommended settings, and using it to play music and use the internet, it lasts 7 hours +

Apart from the 3D and 120Hz screen, is there much difference between the regular 17 and the 3D version? There's about $80 difference on it at the moment.

Well, you will have glasses with the 3D version, but I think apart from the screen it's the same.

I took 3D not because I wanted to watch movies, but because I read in the forum that the display was much smoother (120Hz effect).

I just wanted some opinions in regards to purchasing a SSD drive. I'm still waiting for my Envy 17 to arrive, just want to have the drive before the laptop arrives.

Would either of these drives be a good buy:

Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Chronos MKNSSDCR120GB 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) = $169.99 - Max Sequential ReadUp to 550MB/s, Max Sequential WriteUp to 515MB/s

    Newegg.com - Plextor M3 Series PX-128M3 2.5" 128GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) = $144.99 After $10 Mail-in-Rebate - Max Sequential ReadUp to 510 MB/s, Max Sequential WriteUp to 210 MB/s - Warranty Parts/Labor 5 years limited

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=u0t3869584f9fp0dd0c0s701&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&Item=N82E16820139601&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na = $154.99 After $60 Mail-in-Rebate - Max Sequential ReadUp to 550MB/s (SATA 6Gb/s), Max Sequential WriteUp to 510MB/s (SATA 6Gb/s)

So honestly, how is the panel on the 17? Obviously not IPS, but at least it produces red lol.

How is it though as far as brightness? Colors? Contrast? Viewing angles?

I actually prefer the screen on my ENVY 17 to the 95% gamut screen I had on my Malibal P151HM1.

Obviously it's not as good in contrast, but it's much better in everything else.

I've got the 17 and I love it but don't get the 17 because of a few rotten apples with issues with the 15 ... the 17 is HUGE so if you are just browsing web and editing Word docs stay with 15. If on the other hand you do professional work and need a 17 you cant go wrong.

the price of the envy 17 is only a little more than the 15 and doesn't have the red orange issue but is it too impractical to take it around with you? Does it fit in a backpack?

    Hi Gang,

I purchased a HP Envy 3070 2 weeks ago, upon receiving I noticed immediately that it has 2 stuck pixels (green in color) and the proximity sensors didn't work. HP remotely into the machine took screen grabs and reported back 3 days later it was a fairly common issue - was curious if anyone here knew that to be true.
Needless to say, I returned the machine and the sales agent sweetened an offer for the 3090NR.

Received the 3090NR on Monday, used it for one full today and it was awesome. Next day immediately upon powering up, I received a 90B Fan error message. They had me to a manufacturers hard reset and that didn't correct the issue. Needless to say, this item was returned on Wednesday.

HP is trying to sweeten the offer again but I've lost a lost of faith in HP and this product. Are they truly that poorly made?

The last HP I had was several years ago, an HP DV6000 and it worked for years without complaint. I'm torn between trying a 3rd machine or cutting my losses and looking at Toshiba or Dell.

    Thoughts?
