Hi, up until around a day or two ago, my internet and computer were working fine, but lately, it's completely gone to hell in the internet department. (I'm actually surprised I barely managed to type all of this and submit it as a thread)
The pages barely ever load, when they do, they either take up to a full minute, or load with text/links only (no images or formatting).
When they fail, however, like they usually do, they end up with the following error: http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq273/shishi041/DNS.png
I don't know what is causing it. I have followed the instructions there, and they didn't help. I also tried changing the DNS on my machine to the Google DNS, and that didn't work. I also tried a few other things with the command line, like flushing and re-registering the DNS, but that didn't work either...
I'm almost at the end of my rope here.. If anyone could help me, please do!
Let me know if you need any logs or any info about my setup..
For now, I can say:
ISP: Shaw
Connection: Wireless to Router
Computer: HP ENVY 17 3D 3000

I have also experienced a lot of DNS problems at certain internet cafes, but not others. Sometimes it helps to open up Network Connections, disable wireless adapter then enable.
First try connecting with CAT5 cable directly to your modem and see if it is the wireless router that is causing the problem. You might also want to try buying a new router and return it if it doesn't fix the problem. -
I've tried that, and I rather not buy a new router if possible..

Try calling your ISP - not sure about Shaw but in the US, if you keep complaining they often give you a partial credit for the monthly bill.

The alternative is to see if your router is support by DD-WRT custom firmware and see if this can bring new life to your old router. Follow the instructions carefully, however, as you can brick your router if you don't do it right.
This might be in the wrong forum, as it doesn't sound like its related to your laptop, but your home network. -
I have tried:
Resetting the Router.
Power-cycling the Router.
Connecting through Ethernet Cable.
Using Different Browsers.
Using nslookup in cmd.
Using other prescribed methods with cmd.
Changing the DNS server to an open/google DNS server.
None of these have alleviated the issue...
I have, however, found that when I start the computer in safe-mde with Networking, it connects fine and pages load properly - is it possible it's a driver issue?
If so, what's the quickest way to find out which driver or program is causing this? I really just want to get this done and over with - my computer worked fine until this happened... -
When I have had that problem, something downloaded and added on to my browser tool bar or something interfered with my home page. Check the tool bar and look at your software. I have deleted software that was the issue and things returned to normal.

how about when you go to a different location to use the internet? is the same problem still occuring?
Did you try connecting directly from your cable modem to your laptop (skipping the router) - or are you already using your modem as the router? -
I am now at my other house, and it's acting fine - it seems that there's some setting that is on my computer, that is conflicting with a setting on the router.
The router doesn't have any problems with the other 3 computers in the house, but it seems to have an issue with mine - using this info, does anyone know what's wrong? -
It seems to be only at this one house, because at both College and my other house, but here it is messed up..
While it works fine with the other computers, it is barely working with this computer, always showing DNS errors and "cannot find" errors.
Knowing all of these facts, what can I do to fix them? Is it the router? Even though the other computers are working fine? -
You could try flushing your DNS cache and your ARP cache on your system, although I think this is a shot in the dark since you said it works OK elsewhere.
I blame the router/modem. I hate those all-in-one units.
However, if you want to try ....
Run command prompt as Administrator.
The command is "ipconfig /flushdns" (no quotes),
Look at your ARP table. Run the command prompt as Administrator.
The command is "arp -a". Is it huge?
To flush your ARP, run "arp -d -a" followed by "netsh interface ip delete arpcache"
Run "arp -a" again to verify the ARP table is empty.
Reboot and reconnect to the wireless AP.
Your system will relearn everything.
Also, what DNS are you using at home? FreeDNS? Google? Or have you not set this up? -
-
I just tried that - and it did not work - thank you very much for the help though.
So now, I don't even know what to do... It works fine at other locations... but here, everything is just messed up, even though all of the other computers are working fine.. -
Log into your router and check the settings. Make sure you don't have a QoS (Quality of Service) enabled or if something is throttling bandwidth if there are too many devices on the network.
