Hello everyone, I am really interested by the new ENVY 17 3D, the first laptop which has Full HD 3D screen. Nice CPU and graphic card. Beautiful look. It seem to be the perfect one i am looking for.

Only one problem, why do not HP offer the possibility to choose ATI Radeon 5870? Because the 5850 one is good, but not good enough. If I could choose the 5870 one, I will immediately buy it.

So I want to know, if there is somebody who worked in HP or who may know if HP will offer this possibility so that customers could choose ATI Radeon 5870 HD as graphic card. If yes, when do you think this upgrade will be possible?

Thank you very much. Have a nice day all.

taliciststark, welcom to NBR. Yes, the 5850 is a powerful GPU initself... I know one other notebook that come with the 5870 is that the alienware? Anyway, HP is not offering this card. The only real advice I can give you is wait until Sandy Bridge comes out when the processors and the GPU will be upgraded.

HP is very tight liped about when or what comes out...I couldn't even get HP to tell me when the Envy 17 3D would come out when I called in September to cancel my HP Envy 17 when I heard the 3D was coming out. I was not happy that HP did not inform me the Envy 3D was out in November because I missed out on the infamous $400 coupon, lol.

So if you want to wait, then you can, but who even knows if HP will continue with the Envy line of just rename it to something else... waiting is sometimes overrated.... enjoy the computer now, have a good time here.

ok thank you for answering me. I think I will wait a little more. I want to buy this because it is really the only laptop which offers Full HD 3d screen at the moment. Also the design is good and the graphic card is powerful.

ASUS G73JW-3DE - XOTIC PC - ASUS Gaming Laptop

If you even have to second guess the graphics on the 3D Envy - that means it is not for you. *

You will regret it in the long run. As the card runs at 500/900. The card is distributed at 550/1000 and the Alienware guys are running it at 725/1100.

The 5850 used on the 3D is underpowered - partially because it's at its limits with regards to cooling. Don't expect a better card until HP puts in a second fan.

    * = I say this because it's a multimedia machine first, portability (7.5lbs that I have no trouble taking to class) second and gaming third.

Hi,thank you for the info. I didn't know that the GC will come underpowered. You just change my opinion.

I already know the asus you linked. And the thing which disturbs me is its design. I find that thing a little ugly compare to an Alienware and the HP. I think it should have excellent performance and cooling solution, but excuse me, I really don't appreciate the design.

But well, I will think about it. after all, it has Nvidia GTX 460 which performs better than ATI cards for games.

Once again, thank you for your advice.

The only reason why I linked that laptop is because currently, to my knowledge there are only 2 currently available 1080P 120hz 3D laptop out there - the 3D envy and the Asus.

You said you were looking for a full HD 3d screen; those are the only two available atm. Rumor is that the m17x R3 will have an option for a 1080P 3D screen when released.

yeah that's true, the asus looks really nice. I want to give up alienware, for the reason of weight and noise. I will think about the Asus one. After some videos, the look is not as bad as I think.

Anyway, I will wait for the end of my exams to make my decision. Thanks again.
