Hey, so I kind of signed up here to ask about this one specific thing, I've come here before and read through some things, and got some good information, so I figured it was worth signing up to ask.

I've had my Envy 17 for almost a year now, and slowly over the course of that year there have been weird performance stutters that have become more and more frequent.

When it started it seemed to slow to a crawl for a couple of minutes if I was doing something graphically intense, like playing a game. Since then it has gotten to the point where it does it in normal use, slowing to a stop for upwards of 10 minutes at a time several times a day with nothing more than two or three tabs in Google Chrome open.

It varies in severity, sometimes causing the mouse to stick and lag, other times the mouse remains responsive, but windows remain unresponsive and laggy.

This problem is almost always signified by the fan getting louder, though the couple of times I have been able to get into the task manager it doesn't seem like when this happens it is using up more CPU or system memory on anything.

Anyway, sorry if this situation has already been resolved in another thread, but I would be very grateful for any help you have to offer.

    Thanks!

First question I have for you. What bios version do you have???

Early bios versions before f.15 had a throttling issue, where when the CPU and GPU were both running hot...the machine would slow down to "speedstep" speeds. To find your bios version simply hit FN-ESC and it will bring it up. My recommendation would be f.18. DO NOT upgrade to the latest f.!A, for it seems to cause issues like you are experiencing.

I seem to have F.1A, I guess I must have updated at some point without realizing it. Is it possible to downgrade?

After using my computer some today it did it again, the fan kicked up and the performance slowed down.

Sometimes also when it is starting up it get's stuck on the Windows logo animation until I do a hard reset.

Depending on the version of Coolsense that you have....turn OFF or to Performance. Also, while the machine is cool...blow out the exaust fan and intake. Make sure that your machine isn't clogging...

Oh, alright, I turned Coolsense off and also switched the Desktop mode off of slideshow, as I was noticing that it tended to stutter whenever it was about to switch desktops.

I don't have any condensed air on me, but as soon as I get a chance I will definitely pick some up and clean the exhaust fan.

Thanks again for all your help!
