I can get my hand on one of these today by simply walking into a retail store and buying one. The unit model HP Envy TouchSmart 15-J009TX has been here available for the last 2 weeks of the shelf. Although the only thing that has been stopping me is the touch screen is only 1366 x 768 and the GPU is a 740M.

If i had a sponsor, then I would gladly get it and do a review of the above unit.

Personally I am wanting a model with FHD (which I don't think we are getting over here anyway with the Intel quad). And the GPU must be at least a 750M. However there is a wait till 5th of July on the model with 750M in my country.
Also I would like to point out the model HP Envy TouchSmart 15-J023TX has been confirmed by 3 different online retailers that its 750M will come with DDR3 and not GDDR5, therefore if that is true, then I would be expecting that all 750M models this year will be shipped with DDR3

Where do you live that it's available. I checked my local Best Buy and they still don't have any Haswell laptops. At least according to the guy working in the computers department.....

    New Zealand.

They have been available here in both non-touch and touch screen models, both models feature Intel i7-4700MQ and Nvidia 740M.

So anyone got this? Any impressions/reviews will be great - am about to pull the plug - debating between this and the Ideapad Y510P

    Thanks!

I have the Y510p, and it's an excellent laptop with a great screen and keyboard. Only reason I might return it is because it's battery life is only lasting me 3 hrs! Which sucks because the website said it was supposed to last 5 hrs!
HP's website claims up to 9.5 hrs for the j000, I'm sure it would be a bit lower with the 740M video card but not that much lower, certainly more than 3 hrs.
I'm gonna be starting college this fall so battery life will be important to me...

So I discovered the Lenovo outlet and that decided things for me.

You can get a maxed out Y500 (dual 750M's, i7-3630, 16gb of ram, 1tb HD+16gb caching ssd) for $934+tax and it even ships for free. Link here in the event that anyone else is interested.

I'm going to wait for a review for the envy 15t j000 before I hand over the money :) I wanted the Envy 6 ultrabook, but after reading some reviews that said that the laptop's keyboard and hinges are pretty bad, I hesitated, and plus the fact the screen resolution is so poor. This Envy 15t j000 sounds perfect in theory, just gotta see its build quality now.

I bought the Y510p but unfortunately had to return it. Turns out that Autodesk and Adobe software doesn't take advantage of the SLI configuration which means one of the GPUs would never get used (probably should've researched a little more before purchase). Other than that it was a great computer, the battery life was bad but it's to be expected with so much power. Anyone looking for an affordable gaming rig the lenovo will play anything you throw at it.

I have ordered the hp envy 15 and hopefully it's as good as it sounds.

740m is pretty battery friendly, especially when paired with the lower tdp cpu. I can't imagine your batter life would be impacted more than an hour or so (unless you're heavy gaming obviously.)

Is there really a big difference on the 750m and the 740m that this one has? I just picked one of these up for $880 shipped and I'm wondering if it was worth it. 1080p, 740m, i7 4th gen?

    I got it to work:

Well, for sure it has a good price/quality ratio, just remains to see how it`s the build quality and if there will be any overheating problems. Ship date? 4 july?

The hard drive is user replaceable ?

Any 2.5" hard drive or ssd will fit.

These were my questions to the rep I spoke with though:

    1. What is the voltage of the RAM? A: 1.35V
    2. What is the clock speed of the RAM? A: 1333 mHz
    3. Is there an open mSata slot since you offer an mSSD cache? A: No, the cache value would just deduct from your 1TB HD space.
    4. Is the motherboard SATA III 6 gb/s? A: Yes

All in all a pretty great buy imo. $1000 for a touch screen, discrete graphics and haswell processor plus office and some other features is EXCELLENT value for the money. First thing I'm going to do when I get it is replace the HDD with an SSD and repaste the CPU and GPU with some of my trusty MX-4. I expect this baby to run cool as ice!

If I'm feeling particularly eager I might buy two 8 gb sticks of the Kingston Hyper X CL9 1600mhz LoVo Ram on Newegg, but I doubt that would have very much impact on performance.

EDIT: I didn't ask, but I'm sure the screen is glossy like most (all?) touchscreens.

I'm interested in the Envy 15t-j000 Quad Edition, and while I was customizing it I saw that you could choose both the 1TB hybrid hard drive and the 24GB mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache. I had read somewhere that having both a hybrid drive and acceleration cache could be conflicting, is there any truth to that? And would there be a visible improvement in speed with both the hybrid drive and cache?

    Thanks in advance!

Well, they both do the same thing, there is no reason to get both...better get the msata SSD and normal hdd or no msata ssd and a full 2.5 ssd, the downside of msata ssd is that you can`t go more than 8 gb :D

Okay thanks for the help! I would like to eventually upgrade to a full ssd, but I'm hesitant on doing it myself because I'm afraid I'll screw something up haha. But we'll see, so I'll stick with the normal hdd for now.

This is completely bogus. It either has to be an MSATA or NGFF M.2 slot... Does anyone know which it is? Y410p is NGFF M.2, but short form factor (42mm), so I returned it. I'd like an MSATA since I already have one in my old laptop...

Also, has anyone received theirs with the NVIDIA card yet? Can you run GPU-z and see if it's a GK208 chip? Thanks!

I asked 2 reps and they both said the same thing, but I imagine HP reps aren't the most reliable. If you find a different answer let me know as I would also be curious to see if I can add an mSata ssd.

EDIT: From what I have read about on other HP notebook discussions it is in fact an mSATA drive, however I haven't seen any posts yet indicated success in installing a new mSATA drive and using it.

EDIT2: I don't think they ship until July, but if I get mine and see GK208 I'll be returning it and exchanging it with something without a discrete gpu altogether.

Yup, they are not the brightest tacks in the box. The Lenovo reps were equally as incompetent. Could you link me to said discussions where others say it is MSATA? Funny, I'm the opposite... I want GK208 because it brings Compute Capability 3.5... I want to be able to work with Dynamic Parallelism in CUDA without having to be tied to a desktop.

They are mSATA drives but they are RAIDed with the 1TB drive so you cannot use them separately. The idea is that the system files are located on the mSSD portion. If you look in the administrative tools and in My Computer, it will all look like one C: drive.

    First post :)

When someone gets it, can you tell us how easy it is to swap the HDD? I have a 240gb SDD waiting to be used so I can clone the files from the HDD. Here in the U.S., the graphics option only goes up to Nvidia 740m, I was wondering if anyone could ask them whether they could up it to 750m. It would have been the perfect laptop under $1000, but right now I'm already probably going to buy it. Thanks.

The 17" touchsmart sold at best buy is IPS, so there is a chance that this would be as well. Only way to tell for sure is to call HP or see one in person though.

I am still interested to hear from people when they get their Envys especially about build quality and battery life.

Did you get the 740M, if so can you download the latest version of GPU-Z and post a screenshot of it.

Couple of benchmarks (game) will be nice.

The cooling system vent look bigger on this year model compared to the dv6. Can you put it under some heavy load, and monitor the temperature with HWmonitor, and let us know the temps it get up to, and how hot the bottom and keyboard gets?

For a laptop, you have to go 4th gen Haswell you guys, the desktops are idling at such ridiculously low voltages, that the batteries will for sure have way more time than Ivy Bridge laptops

I've used a hybrid drive on a DV6t and it worked great, I didn't see a huge gain to the SSD I bought. I just got paranoid about mechanical drive failure after I had one go on me. What I don't like is the unpredictability of the hybrid, when SSD is actually used, etc. however, if you know what a ram drive is, then photoshop/adobe guys won't care much about the hard drive.

As far as the HP goes, my DV6t wasn't the best quality, but I got used to the fingerprint reader and can't live without it anymore. Now that Envy has it, I'm game.

No, you can use the fingerprint reader to profile switch, launch applications, log into every website, etc. I've found it to be very secure. I have nearly 300 logins setup on the reader. I also have my laptop setup where my main profile doesn't have admin rights so my browsing activity can't compromise my machine. When I need to do something that requires admin rights, I profile switch. I've found this to be very handy as well when it comes to work. I have the Admin profile setup very clean for presentations so that there are no surprises when my machine is plugged into something public. I just use my fingerprint and it switches so quick.

I do not see the fingerprint scanner for the custom-build model, neither on the specs or on the configuration page. Is that now comes as a standard? Or is not available yet for the custom builds?
What do you think of the Screen quality? Brightness and color management? You think is passable/below average, or kind of washout as some people reported here before?

I can confirm that the fingerprint reader is in the custom built 15t. I also love having it since all you have to do is swipe your finger whenever you need to log in. The only problem is that you forget all your login/passwords since you never have to type them. Just like when cell phones were introduced. I used to have everyone's phone number memorized, but now that they're stored in my phone, I don't have any numbers memorized.

    Hi,
I'm thinking of getting this laptop as well. Can anyone explain in some detail whether or not I should get BOTH the Hybrid Hard Drive as well as the mSSD acceleration cache?
I talked to an HP rep, and they said I could add both without causing conflicts, but I'd expect them to do that.
Would it also save battery life to get both? If I could only get one, which should I get?

Hi, I asked the same question a few pages ago, and a few people have replied. So read those and it may help your decision.

Oh and does anyone know if there are video reviews of the 15t yet? Or even external written reviews?

Ahh I see. But since the mSSD is only $30, would it hurt to get it along with the Hybrid Hard Drive? Also, does anyone know how both of these would affect battery life?

    Thank you.
