Yes, HP does give you a little bit off the price of the laptop, but the real gold is the no tax benefit. In California, where the tax rate is one of the highest in the country (0.0825), this discount will save you a good $200-$400 depending upon your notebook.

The Academic discount I got was 6% of the cost of my Dv4000; the discount varies with the amount of your purchase. I also got the $50.00 rebate.

Are you sure there is no tax? How can they drop the sales tax without an tax exemption certificate. I live in NY and I believe APP or not, HP charges sales tax. If I am wrong that would be great - any NYers buy using Ed discount and avoid tax???

I expect HP has a presence in New York, so likely they would charge you sales tax in New York. Unless the rules have changed, sales tax does not need to be paid unless the seller has a presence in the state where the sale is made. In Maine, Gateway products could be bought tax free until Gateway opened a County Store (remember that ill fated experiment?). Regardless of HPs practice of not charging sales tax, some individual states have statutes that require buyers to pay the sales taxes themselves. In Maine there is a space on the State Income Tax form specifically for this purpose. Beware the Tax Man he, and casinos, always win in the end.

If you shop on HPShopping.com you're buying mail order. In most states, HP doesn't charge sales tax from that site, buying mail order. It has nothing to do with the educational discount, it's cuz it's mail order. However, there are a half dozen states where you DO have to pay sales tax on HPShopping.com. NY might be one of them but I'm not sure.

NY definitely is. Unfortunately, Dell too.
