I am considering the purchase of an HP Elitebook 840 G4 with WQHD Display (2560 x 1440). It is IPS, which is good, but I'm concerned about such a high resolution on a 14" screen.
Ordinarily, I'd think 1920 x 1080 would be the max for this screen size. I know Windows scaling can be used to help with this high resolution but I also understand that it is unreliable and doesn't work with everything.
What do you guys think.
Thanks!

Battery life. Do you need it? Do you need 6 hours or more typically? Then I would suggest looking elsewhere.
About scaling, it depends on the program. Almost every program works fine with scaling, it can look kinda ugly but it will still work.
Old programs might not scale.
The WQHD is a nice display though for sure. -
I'd prefer more than 6 hours. Would I be better off with an 830? Is there another HP I could consider?
I'm some what limited in notebook choice as this is a corporate computer and we are an HP shop. I personally prefer Lenovo for a work notebook but that isn't a choice here.
We are also still on Windows 7. I've read that Windows scaling is better with Windows 10.
Also, how do these high res monitors handle just being set to a lower resolution, say 1920 x 1080?

There is no 830. Yet... 820, 840 and 850.
Elitebook 1030 is a new 13" one. It has Core M cpu, so it has long battery life and no fan but less performance compared to Core i5 or i7 computers.
Latest Intel Kaby Lake systems do not support old OS like Win7. Only 10. That info was originally released over a year ago but it is now reality. 840 G4 is Kaby Lake system, so installing Win7 in it would not be wise. If you must have Windows 7, then you need to look at one generation older devices.
I chose a well equipped 840 G2 couple months ago. 1080p IPS, 4G LTE, dual storage (M.2 and 2.5" both). I was deciding between 840 G2 and G3 for a while but chose older one because it still uses that old power plug. I have tons of those old power supplies around (and computers to go with them). Performance wise I would do fine even with a Core M cpu, since laptop wouldn't be my only PC.
I have work issued T450s and it is pretty much same laptop as G840 G2. Diffrences are outer shell (plastic vs metal) and input devices (clickpad vs. touchpad). Both are good choises but that clickpad... sigh.
