This thread is to help those who aren't too sure about the Envy 14; and are waiting for reviews / videos to see if it is up to their expectations. And to make it a little easier for newcomers to view info about the laptop because 300 pages in 1 thread is too much to go through.

Great Link for Info (PDF) http://h20424.www2.hp.com/campaign/consumer_notebooks/ap/en/resources/HP-ENVY-brochure.pdf

Below will be a list of the people who will be ordering the first day it becomes available.

Please tell me if you are getting it on day one to help the list expand.

    ~Estimated Release Date: June 27~
~Estimated Date for Pre-orders (if applicable) : Any day Now~

    -- (quote from addyct)
-The GPU setup will be Intel HD graphics+ATI RADEON 5650 (unless you get a quadcore CPU, which will not have integrated graphics). We have not seen any evidence that there will be any other options.
-Display options will include a 1600x900 "Radiance" Display and POSSIBLY a 1366x768 option. The former is definite, the latter is rumored but plausible.
-According to The newest Information we have, the CPU options will be a Dual core i5-430m, 520m, 540m, and a Quad Core i7-720GM. i3 options are not mentioned, but are still possible.
-Expected to have 7 hours battery life + 7 hours with battery slice (quote from video) While we know that's unlikely, we know the battery life will still be good.

    Rumors:

    1) The laptop will come with the new synaptic's touchpad
    2) The laptop will come with i3 and not an i5 processor (now highly unlikely)
    3) The laptop will have poor/bad build quality due to the Envy 17 having a bad batch
    4) (thanks to Oobleck) There is a possibility that at the back on the laptop there is poor ventilation that can lead to alot of heating /screen problems.

Nice summary of all the info, thanks!

You should consider adding information about the potential ventilation problem on the back of the laptop, near the screen

Too many rumours for my taste, but still thank you very much for that overview.

    However, I'd bet 50$ that there won't be a 1366 * 768 option :p

I agree. If you look on the PDF for every upgrade it shows each individually. but the only option in general for the envy 14 is the radiance display. This makes the deal even sweeter. We will see i guess when pre-orders are available.

Yeah, It has been in the back of my mind that they MIGHT offer it on the 999 dollar version, but then I read This Post and realized that if they did, there would be almost NO reason to buy the Envy over the dv6t:se.

This is going to be a tough choice between the E14 and the soon to be refreshed E15. I hope they drop the starting price of the E15 down from 1299. I also can't determine which size will be better for college. Just have to wait and see.

Regarding the rumors of the new synaptics touchpads...

    Unfortunately, that seems highly unlikely.
In the articles and pictures of the new touchpads, they did not have the dividing lines for left and right click. Rather they were mbp like, click to left click (anywhere on the pad) and NOT (like the current clickpads) still click on the lower left corner.

    Just my 2 cents.

I personally have gotten used to tapping to click. I haven't heard anything about the multitouch tap-clicking on the envys.
    Anyone know if it's 1 finger:left, 2 fingers:middle, 3 fingers:right or 1 finger:left, 2 fingers:right?

I'm planning on buying the 14 as soon as I get home from a family reunion that lies right on the release date. (I'm crossing my fingers for hotel wifi, my phone's 3g gets throttled to an unusable bandwidth if I exceed 5MB... which I always do)

I also forgot to add: One of the voodoo engineers said that the envy was getting around 5 hours of battery life when he was using it.
He said nothing about screen brightness, which gpu he was using, or any other power saving option :/

    I meant the clicking part.
Physical clicking, not tap to click.

The new synaptic ones allow you to press anywhere to click (not tap, physically click the clickpad), like the mbp.

The one I see on the envy 14, is similar the ones on the 15 and 17.
You can't physically click on the upper left or right or center, only the lower left and lower rgiht.

For college smaller is always better, imo. I'm questioning the 14.5" screen on the Envy 14 because it seems kind of big, but at the same time the 16xwhatever screen real-estate seems like a worthwhile trade...

I know, it's still 1 finger down and click is a left click, two is a middle click, three is a right click. Even on the new clickpad from Synaptics.

Is that for the current Envy notebooks or only the new synaptics that isn't on any of the Envy's yet?

In other words, can you put three fingers down for right click on the current synaptics Envy touchpads?

It's not a touchscreen. The little Arrow on the Screen (just like the one you have!) is where it clicks.

Yes, you can. you can do it with most multitouch trackpads that use Synaptics (which is most of them), not just HP machines.

So if you depress the entire surface of the pad it doesn't move the cursor when you put down your second and third fingers, basically?

It should work the same way the clickpads on Macbooks and MBP's work. the entire surface depresses. go check out a mac at a Best buy if you can't figure it out.

I went back to prepaid since I don't use my phone enough to justify paying for a plan. I bought my phone as a deal where it came with a free 5MB of 3g data per month, $5/mo ups it to (I think) 250MB, but I have to pay some amount to switch. My city's filled with wifi, so I don't have much of a need for a real data plan.

That's good news about the touchpad :D I've happily used a synaptics touchpad for the past couple of years and have gotten used to the slightly jerky scrolling, though I wouldn't mind the driver update HP/voodoo mentioned

To (hopefully) clear up a page of confusion: I was asking about tap to click, which is touching the touchpad with x fingers simultaneously to click ( without depressing it)
Depressing the bottom left performs a left click; the right a right click.
Touching the pad with multiple fingers does not make the cursor jump.
(assuming it'll have the touchpad it's shown with in all press shots and videos)

probably not, but who knows. When they were displaying it, it was on an Envy 15 ( Here's a story showing it) and It wouldnt be too much of a stretch to fit it to the 14's.

Actually, I'm willing to bet that the default screen IS the 1366x768, as both the Envy 15 and the Envy 13 base models had that resolution. Why offer the higher resolution at the default price when you can charge more and people will pay to get it?

Also, the only spec sheet released from HP for U.S. customers indicates that at least one model has 1366x768: ENVY 14-1010NR (see spec list on page 2).

That's the model number, not the serial number. Each machine will have a unique serial number.

As far as price, it may be a good estimate. However, if ordering directly from HP, one may see a lower price.

6GB is a $100 upgrade on the Envy 17, that plus $50 each for the HDD and CPU is my guess for the $200 increase.

I agree though - weird config.

So the best guess for the $999 base config seems to be:
    i5-430 , 4 GB DDR3 (2x2), 320 GB , Display 1366 x 768

but on the link on the front of this page (pdf) theres no option but the radiance screen. Which makes it interesting to think about because all others have the option of upgrading where available. It could be a marketing ploy but maybe.. just MAYBE its going to happen =p.

Ugh, looking at the Amazon page and saw this
    "Battery Life
    Up to 3.75 hours"

Was hoping the 7 hours was w/o slice, but it looks like I'm definitely getting the slice now. Maybe this is with dedicated graphics, wifi, bluetooth, and screen on high brightness; none of which I would have on (except wifi) when I'm trying to save battery.

I really don't see the purpose of the Envy 14 at this point.. you can get lighter, faster (not GPU wise), and more portability with the Dm4t for cheaper (with an SSD!), or get just as fast with the Dv6 for cheaper while not being too much bigger.

The only thing the Envy has is backlit keyboard (Dv6 has it too), and a higher res screen. That's not worth the extra dough for less for me.

    envy14>dm4t because:
    1. better screen
    2. better graphics
    3. better build quality (i hope... since this is the premium line)

From my viewpoint the main advantage of Envy14 ist the bright 1600x900 screen. Otherwise it's not really worth the extra money. I wouldn't buy the Envy14 with the low res screen.

    Don't get the i7. i5 = intergrated graphics = better battery life.
