The results may be biased because of the whine's frequency.

You really should make a voting option that says "I don't have mine yet" since some people just like to vote to see poll results even though you can just click view poll results.

    2/17 have the whine.

this forum is annoying. Why are the loud mouths always made to seem like the majority.

this thread has done well so far.

People who have the whine, is it all the time or is it just in certain instances...for me I believe it's only when there's something plugged into a usb port

Is it that all 520m and 450m's have this whine, but most people can't hear it? Or are the cpus that whine actually defective?

This same question has been asked on the forums of every computer maker that uses icores. I have no idea. I really want to listen to a supposedly "silent" laptop. I have a sick feeling that they all make the same noise, but many people don't have decent hearing in that range.

Maybe i should just deafen myself?

This is biased. There are people who don't think I have a whine because they haven't honed in on it to listen for it correctly.

Please put this guide and instruct them to attempt it first.

I'd say remake this entire poll.

Well why would you want to LOOK for the whine then complain about it? if you dont hear it unless your ear is 100% next to the keyboard then who cares?

I'd rather find it now then after my 21 days is up. Also I am not LOOKING for it; I hear it now because my brain recognizes the sound/pitch. Also, I can hear the whine from about 2 feet away from my keyboard.

It could take hours or days to hear/trigger the first whine, its better to know what to look for now before you realize a month in and then can't get it out of your head.

I didn't hear it until I had used it for about 6 hours. Perhaps thats when my cpu usage dropped, or when it got quiet enough, either way I guarantee you after identifying you can't stop hearing it, its not something easily ignored,

So, why prolong the inevitable XD

It's better for people who aren't comfortable opening a laptop to hear it within their 21 days, no?

I have two Envy 14's and both make an almost inaudible whine. It is more of a screech than a whine. If it is really quiet with absolutely no background noise, I can pick it up. Sounds like a noisy capacitor much like what you hear out of a power supply. Are we on battery or plugged in when the noise occurs?

those of you who have the whine, just try to make sure it isn't coming from the power adapter. i can hear high pitched sounds like those annoying ringtones so i know i have no whine on my laptop. however the power adapter produces a very annoying high frequency sound which i can hear from several feet away. i talked to an hp online support technician and will be sent a new power adapter.

If you return it for a replacement, it won't be built until th 13th of August... Fortunately I convinced them to give me free 2 day shipping and its $20 cheaper now (i think its because they charged for self made recovery disks)

Also, for those of you who still have the CPU Whine try install the newest version of catalyst (10.6)...It seems like the whine isnt as loud for me now.

Is there anyone with a Quad that has whine? Of course, I'm also interested in those with quads that have no whine. Data from 840 owners would be even better.

It would be a good idea to store the current results of the poll and then compare in two weeks with the results of the second batch of envy 14 that will get delivered in a few days.
Whine % age should be similar, won't they ?

just curious but will the whine be noticeable right away or does it take days to show up. i got my envy yesterday and it its extremely quite and i have been using a blue-tooth mouse and i transferred some files via USB drive. so am i to understand that if it hasn't shown up by now its not going to?

    best wishes,

I was seriously set on the Dv6z select edition, mainly because of it having features the Envy didn't (Fingerprint reader, touch screen), but I don't think my parents will buy in time to have the $150 rebate help out.

They're pretty stuborn, so the Dv6zse might end up costing to much, and I'd have to op out the touch screen. I think I configured an Envy 14 that is pretty much the same, but does it make a loud whine?

Did all of the Envy 14's make a whine? I will be gaming partly, just some Gmod, Portal, and TF2 maybe.

If THAT many people think that it doesn't have a whine, it probably isn't bad. Alright, I don't think a 1366 x 768 res is that bad, so Envy 14 is a backup just incase the unforseen happens.

Just wondering, but have any of the recently bought Envy 14's made any noise?

I'm hoping that it's something that only came with the first bought Envy 14's.

You should be all set. Two things you should do is put your ear right up against the middle of the keyboard with the sound turned off while being in a silent room. Do the same thing, but put your ear on the middle vent on the underside of the laptop. If you dont hear anything you should not have the whine, or you simply cannot hear it. Either way, I would keep checking until your 21 days is up.

Hmm, after doing some reading, it appears that inductor coils can make a whine if not completely fixed to the motherboard. Capacitors can contribute but the actual noise is most likely an inductor coil.
