How to make the inductor coils quiet? - XtremeSystems Forums
The New Rebels Haven Forum!!: AN35N making noises
Not sure if that will completely help any of you on the whine noise, cred to htwingnut for the inductor coil find.
-
Alright, I found something from a different forum.
-
Based on this photo though, I don't see where there would be any inductors or capacitors. I think someone brave enough has to tear theirs apart.
Could it be something underneath the CPU? There's several rows of resistors, any inductors there (desktop i5, assuming mobile i5 is similar?)
I dunno. It'll be a wild goose chase I think. -
Ugh, this fix I posted might end up breaking some Envys of brave users.
-
Let's see if that helps.
Eidt: Crap, that won't help at all. -
For me, it seems like the whining noise only appears whenever I plug in s USB device.
-
-
The inductors won't look like those... they will look like a big giant square where it is enclosed with a plastic shell. They are chip inductors and not the ones you will find on a desktop.
-
I just noticed today not only does the CPU whine, but the power brick whines at a much higher frequency when the computer is turned off. Anyone notice this?
-
-
I found my NBR whines a lot lately in the HP forums...
-
I have not really noticed any significant whine on either of the Envy 14's. Then again, I use Bluetooth external mice and keyboards and have not used anything in the slot but a USB hard drive. No noise using that, either.
-
I GOT THE WHINE AFTER A FORMAT AND FRESH WINDOWS INSTALL!! Its f"'''''' annoying....
((( i-450 ssd
-
-
i have the i7-840 never heard any whine
-
I have a 520 and there is now a whine after about 3 days of use. Dont know if im going to RMA.
Can you just request a repair? so i can keep my price... -
My i3-370m is is whining quite loudly now... I don't know if I'll be able to put up with this. I really like the laptop otherwise.
-
My i5-450 seems to have minor whine randomly when I start it up. Some sessions, it would be fine, others I can hear the whine, but I don't think its too bad, since my power brick seems to whine much louder and at a higher frequency and I really don't notice the CPU whine unless I'm thinking about it, so maybe tracking my laptop all the way from China made me go crazy.
-
-
Second BCB purchase group and has slight whine in 450M
-
2nd BCB order here, 7/12 order date, no whine with 520m.
-
can someone make a recording or explain what the heck is this whine? I hear something, but I wouldn't describe it as whine
-
YouTube - HP ENVY 14 Fan Cycling/CPU Whine -
i hear a lot of whine here
Do you really sit and listen to all the noises around you? Unless it interrupts whatever you are doing when you blast music or watch youtube video this is really a minor thing.
-
I just started getting whine on my i3 last night. Not really audible unless you're close to the laptop and/or trying to hear it.
Lame. -
I have whine on my i520m. Simply put this whine is horrid, I RMA'd my laptop today and am hoping my next one is not so bad.
-
I ordered my laptop with the BCB discount and I want to exchange it cuz of this freakin whine. Will I lose the discount or could they just send me an identical laptop?
-
Augh. I definitely have the whine, but I can't RMA because I'd be in college (and need the laptop) way before I got it back. I'm just hoping there'll be a DIY cure at some point.
-
I think I have a possible explanation of why the e14 seems to have relatively loud whine. I noticed that if I put my hand flat over sections of the keyboard I can feel a little air current.
I think they designed the computer so that the fans intake air through the keyboard. Looking at the bottom of the laptop you can see that there is hardly any venting.
If the keyboard assembly is built with some holes in the bottom to allow air flow through that would also let more of the noise escape. -
hi guys,
i720 here, no whine whatsoever. Extremely happy with this laptop. ( running ubuntu 10.4) -
btw, 2nd batch, i5-520... its pretty annoying Im thinking of RMA'in it -
I have no whine. Well, I thought I had it once for about 30 seconds, hard to tell though because I had my kids yelling and playing in the background. Right now its quiet out and hear no whine.
-
Update! The whine is GONE. I havent made any changes. Don't know why...
Those who wonder what the whine is... It is a liight high tone that you hear when you do ear tests. Like the tone for those who got ear problem. -
isn't it on all i5's though? not just envys?
-
I have it one my i3 as well. It started a few days ago. It's not there 100% of the time, just comes on when it feels like it. I get over it, since my music is on pretty much 24/7. It's probably not as loud as other peoples though.
-
From my experience all laptops have this what you are calling"whine" which is actually more like electric buzzing. The noise levels do vary depending on what you are doing with the laptop. I can hear it when I put my ear against the center of the keyboard on my Envy. The problem is that Envy fans are way too quiet and especially when they turn off, this electric buzzing is the only noise that stands out. I have Lenovo X61 which is 3 years old and Toshiba m400 (5 years) and both have the same electric buzzing if you put your ear against the keyboard. The fans are too loud on both of them, so it's the only way for me to hear this. So, I would suggest you all guys to get over this and enjoy your Envy, especially if you got a sweet deal with BCB.
-
For people who use Google Chrome--can you try opening Chrome (with no other programs loaded and at the Google homepage) and tell me if the buzzing is worse than when you are just at the desktop not running anything?
I just noticed the buzzing is much worse for me when I'm using Chrome except when at a webpage with a lot of flash or whatever which loads the cpu.
Interestingly, Internet Explorer doesn't cause it. -
p.s. I prefer listening to my 3 year old HP's loud fans + buzzing over the Envy's whine -
How do we know the polls are correct. Not to offend anyone by calling them old, but as people age, their hearing starts to fail starting with the higher frequencies. So perhaps everyone does have the whine, just some people aren't picking it up.
Edit: I hear whine on my E14, it's like holding a note, but it's taking frequent breaths. -
-
As someone pointed out in one of the owners thread, most of the whining seems to be coming when the laptop is idle... -
i try to defrag (using PerfectDisk) to keep my cpu running but i still hear it. i use adaware scanner and slightly hear it... unless i'm using more intensive programming it can really be bothersome when i want to study in front of my laptop -
-
This poll is kinda vague. My CPU whine goes on and off only when I'm plugging in/out a USB device or toggling Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is off and I have no USB devices I have no whine, but for whatever reason, if I reboot my envy, I start to get whines again unless I toggle bluetooth on then off.
-
I just got my second envy 14...There's no whine without a usb mouse...as soon as i plug one in though it goes rampart... Well it was nice knowing you guys, I am done with this laptop, 1300 is to much to spend for something i am not completely satisfied with.
-
i know the whine sucks,
but i posted a temp/perm fix here if your willing to deal with it a lil.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...blem-high-pitch-sound-source-confirmed-2.html
and yes i know it really does suck that we even have to do this -
I didn't have any whine for the first several days of usage. After using the OD drive to rip my cd collection yesterday, I now have constant whine.
Have to give serious props to HP on this one. -
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
Well I just recieved my envy in perfect condition, except for a slight whine.
Reading all of the reviews on it, i thought it would be a constant high pitched whine, which you would easily hear.
I can hear the whine only if the room is dead silent. I can also hear it when I am looking for it, but it does not bother me at all. The whine does get louder at sound points, but not unbearable.
The whine was the biggest concern for me, but it does not bother me that much at all. If I really cannot stand the whine, the fix posted above works pretty good.
Other then the whine, my envy came in excellent condition. The touchpad is slightly raised on the right side, but doesn't bother me at all. I have some ke flex around the P and E key, but is unoticable while typing. My HP logo is perfect, no marks or scratches, just a slight CPU whine, which does not bother me at all.
Others may have a louder whine, but I believe everyone has this whine, but some do not hear it. I cannot really hear the whine over the fans or the Hard Drive sounds, so to me, it's just another computer sound. -
I know this has been mentioned repeated times but every time I pull out my mouse's USB receiver, the whine completely disappears.
So those of you are who not reporting the whine, can you try to attach a USB receiver to any port and see if a whine appears a few minutes after???
Too bad I think the mousepad on the Envy sucks.... \= -
i had my nano receiver in my lappy since day one so i never tried that.
hopefully it stays silent like this... ok time to invest in a bluetooth mouse
