I sent my laptop in to fix the fan cpu whine issue.
I should get it back august 17th and will update if the fix has fixed it.
I have also taken alot of pictures of the laptop, so if there is any damage i can prove hp did it.

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
-
Is there any better video recordings of whine issue? I am yet to understand what the problem.
-
Try to play with the bluetooth/USB ports by connecting devices and see if a whine appears.
Mine only whines when USB mouse adapter is connected, but I haven't tried bluetooth since I don't really use that feature -
Mine whines regardless of what's connected. Funnily, my whine stopped when I was playing the audio file of someone else's whine.
-
Repair in Norway takes 2-3 weeks.
-
I5-450... no whine
-
The difficulty addressing this issue stems from the fact that the CPU whine varies according to several factors:
1. CPU load-the whine only occurs at very low processor usage (0-5%).
2. Whether or not a USB device is plugged in.
3. Whether or not bluetooth is turned on (this doesn't affect my whine, but other users have reported it).
4. The sensitivity of the person listening to it. As you may know, as we age we lose the ability to hear sounds in the extremely high pitched range. This may account for some people reporting no whine when there actually is one. -
I have 2 Envy 14s and I initially thought both mine were free of the whine despite reading details about it here. Eventually I heard the whine by putting my ear really close to the center of the keyboard or underneath the laptop.
-
Ok guys..
I didn't think I had the whine before and was very happy with the laptop
But now, it's been past the 21 days RMA period and I hear it. The longer I hear it, the worse it rings in my ears.
Can I do something about this or am I SOL? -
-
I'm glad I bought the extra HP care warranty so I can have them come to my house to try and fix the whine.
-
I don't really care if I have to keep bluetooth on to keep the whine away. I am still getting great battery life with it on and I haven't even done a clean install yet. My average discharge rate is around 13000 mWh and I get 4:30 on battery life.
-
I guess I don't have whine because nothing bothers me about the noise in ultra silent environment other then occasional fan cycles.
If that matters... I am a healthy with no ear problems -
disregard this post.
-
Any solution?
-
I was thinking of buying one, but the whine has me concerned. Is it worth waiting for a latter batch?
-
Damn, I thought I got by with a no-whine cpu, but after a few weeks with the laptop it has started up. Seemed to kick in as soon a I installed my first piece of software (MS Office). Wow is it annoying. I'm probably past my 21 days too, crap.
-
I am scared to purchase the laptop now. It seems like it's more common with the i5-450m...maybe i shouldn't get that processor?
-
Well, I got my e14 i5 520m back from repair on Friday. I have a normal(?) sounding fan, and seemingly less whine. It's a bit hard for me to compare...but there's still a tiny bit of high pitched noise when idle. If i didn't have the problem originally, I'd say this wasnt even noticeable.
On a related note, they formatted my 256 ssd while in repair. Actually, I wouldn't know the difference between a formatted drive, new drive, or whole new machine. Who knows. In any case, no TRIM. -
I have used both of mine in quiet rooms, at night, with and without USB or Bluetooth devices, no noticable noise. On battery and on power, no noise, no whine, no squeal. Now, if I put my ear up against my system, very close, I can pick up something but all notbooks I have used make some noise. My daughter's new DV5T makes no noise, as well. Or, perhaps, my ears are so worn out that I cannot detect any pitch above 10K effectively
-
-
Guess problems come in pairs or triplets. After my CPU whine started my fans also started triggering on and off at high speed fairly frequently (as others had mentioned before). For the first few weeks they were silent. Oh and then I had my first freeze. I was going to hibernate mode and it froze up, screen went black but machine was still on. Took me about 4 hard power down and power ups to get the screen back on.
And she falls apart... -
Oh and I forgot to mention I think my battery door is broke. The locking mechanism is very resistent to sliding all the way over, so I fear it will break if I force it.
-
The whine's really driving me mad when there are no other sounds... I also seem to have fan cycling every once in a while, but thankfully that's nothing a BIOS update can't fix.
The whine's more discouraging though since I cannot possibly ship it back in time (I need it for school). Did we even get clear positive results from the supposed fan replacement fix? -
I went with the Macbook Pro. Simply could not risk having this whine for college, as RMA would be out of the question. Good luck everyone, I'm out.
-
-
-
How does the return policy work after the 21 day "no questions asked period"? My E14 started to whine, but I have already started school and can't be without a laptop. Can I wait till fall break and then get it worked out?
-
-
Has anyone who has sent theirs back for repairs and/or returned the laptop due to the whine issue had it resolved? Mine's very irritating, but until I hear of others getting positive resolutions on this, I'm just going to hold onto it and keep ignoring it, as irritating as it is...
-
I sent mine in for repair. I still have whine
But at least the loud fan was fixed. It's been a week since I got the repaired machine back. I'll probably call HP tomorrow and see what my options are.
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
wait so did u send it in for the whine to get fixed? if so, did they tell you it was the CPU fan?
-
Yes and yes "fan assembly".
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
Wow i knew it wasnt the fan. I should have gotten mine back last week but now i should get it next week.
If mine still has the whine, i dont know what im going to do... R u sending yours back in? -
updated my bios to .12 and i have no more whine with bt on, mic on, usb ports used.
-
Updated the bios .12 , still have the whine. Its no more a still tone, but biip biip biip high frequensy.. intervalls of 0,5 secs.
-
So i got rid of the whine by using that fix a few pages ago, but I also get this screeching noise when my cpu is processing something. Its definately better than the whine but its kind of loud at times, is there any fix to this?
-
are there any news concerning the whine?? i am RMAing my i5 520m for constant whine. is there any hope that the next one will be better? did anybody get its whine repaired from hp?
-
the cmd fix works really well
-
sorry, i dont find that cmd fix... which one is it?
-
It makes your processor work constantly, i.e., kills your battery and runs up your heat.
It's not a fix, it's a poor workaround until HP gets off their asses.
EDIT: Scoured the thread for the link but couldn't find it... -
i dont have any whine but i have heard the same high frequency pitch coming out of my AC Brick... some of you should check that...
-
I also had that high frequency pitch coming out of the AC Brick. It was nothing against the whine though: much more quiet, continous frequency, no morse effect. The AC sound was basically a high pitched sinus tone.
I RMAd my Envy today for CPU Whining Issues. Now I don't know if its worth ordering another one... -
how r u guys figuring the freq ? this poll really should include all envys. i had 2 17s so far one i5 the other i7 with noise coming from around the enter key (wireless module). however the noise on the i7 has almost disappeared. maybe the circuits need a good break in ...
-
Should I return my envy to Futureshop, I would return it, but I'm worried that any future Envy's they give me will also have the whine, oh and I have to restore everything to default settings, and whatnot.
-
Just got my envy back from repair and it sill has the whine
-
tell u guys wat: heres the number to the customer accounts manager hotline (its a us/canada based center) . ask for Eric and complain about it. i have forwarded an email to him with several links to here and other complaints around the net).
beware, they may scratch your notebook cause they dont use plastic pry tools.

This isn't a solution, but if you can't return it, or if they repair it and it still has the whine and you don't mind a bit of extra heat/power consumption/fan noise, then run folding@home (the regular version). It will keep your cpu from idling, and unlike other methods of preventing cpu idling, at least this way you are helping a good cause.
-
I even left a detailed letter as well as recordings, a spectrographic analysis of the sound and location map of it's origin and they didn't seem to be interested.
I posted on this here.
It almost seemed like it went away when I upgraded to f12, but I remember it coming back again, I think. My new one is at f6 and I'm sticking with this until something newer than f12 comes out that hopefully wont have as many problems.
ALSO, GUYS, CHECK THIS OUT: In my class, I've got a guy sitting in back of me with an i5 powered Thinkpad and I heard his computer making the same noise. I don't know if that computer shares the same mobo, but it *does* have the same CPU as me and I most definitely heard it. This means it's not necessarily HP's fault. While they could try and track it down, I think we're all just going to have to live with the fact that this generation of Intel CPU's are just noticeably noisy. I seem to remember the second batch of PIII's having the same problem.
Regardless, the sound is at 15.8-16.2kHz, and since this is at the upper end of the majority of the population's hearing, don't expect a fix to come any time soon. -
Is the "whine" more of a "beep" sound?
