So I ordered an Envy 14 in early January and it came with the GS30N. The second one I received last week came with a UJ897.

There seems to be plenty of info available for the GS30N, but not for the UJ897. In addition, there appears to be several software compatibility issues with the UJ897.

    Is anybody knowledgeable about this?

I have the UJ897 too, so far it has worked for me. I have yet to try some more advanced operations : burning CDs and DVDs and backing up some audio CDs into mp3

Only bad thing is that it's noisy and vibrate when reading a disc.

What kind of software issue have you heard of ?

AnyDvd doesn't work with it. Others with the drive reported the same issue. After doing some more research, it appears that other software publishers either don't support or only partially support this drive.

Do you have a 1200 series Envy?

I have a GS20N (not GS30N) and it's extremely loud and shakes the laptop pretty strongly when spinning at full. I've seen the UJ897 and it doesn't get nearly as loud or shakey. Is this typical of drives when they get older? Is my drive just busted? Can I replace it?

    I have a 1000 series (CTO-1000, original run with the radiance and i5 520m).

I have a UJ897. It can get loud. I have not tried anydvd with it.

Does yours get pretty loud and rickety too? Mine shakes the laptop pretty heavily.

hmmm. mine doesn't shake the laptop. it just revs up. (though not a gs20/30n so that's probably why)
