    Hi,

So I recently bought an Envy 14 and I love it but I need it to be able to connect to VGA for presentations in college. I do these frequently so this is an absolute must.

Does anyone know if the official HP HDMI to VGA cable works with the Envy 14. It seems to list the Envy 17 as compatible but not the 14 and I don't want to spend 50 euro on a cable that doesn't work with my machine.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or solutions?

This is the Official HP cable which I've found for 50 euro including shipping:

HP HDMI to VGA Display Adapter | HP® Official Store

Oh and separately if anyone can recommend where to get a cheap HDMI to DVI cable (must ship to Ireland) then that would be great.

    Thanks a lot

    J

    It should work fine.

And dont buy official cables, they overcharge like crazy.

    Try this one

Isn't that one you've just linked just a cable though? I would have thought there would be issues converting digital into analog with just a cable?

If anyone has any personal experience with HDMI output to VGA input and the Envy 14 please share. And cable recommendations or warnings really appreciated.

If one can get Meritline to ship to one's location, one would be saving one's money alot more than one might save buying from another shop that one chose.

Has anyone come up with a satisfactory solution to this problem of connecting to a VGA monitor?

I thought that DVI outputs also carry a VGA signal, so that's why the DVI to VGA connectors are very simple. Does HDMI not carry the analogue signal?
Otherwise a simple VGA to HDMI cable would work?

VGA is analogue. HDMI is digital.

You would need an expensive analogue to digital converter.

There is no such things as a simple HDMI-VGA cable. The one's that exist are a fraud.

oops, maybe i wasn't clear on my other post, i need a HDMI to VGA solution. I was suprised that such a thing doesn't exist because you could do it with DVI because it had the VGA embedded, i thought the same was true for HDMI.

That aside- what would someone recommend for use with the envy 14? it appears, from a quick, google search that users have had mixed luck with various devices.

    Cheers

Thats the other way around if you wanna change your VGA so you can use an HDMI cable. He wants it so he can use the HDMI port thats already in the Envy to connect to a projector that has VGA only.

Same problem in either direction since HDMI is digital, VGA is analogue.

Still needs either a D/A (HDMI to VGA) or A/D (VGA to HDMI) converter.

As an example of HDMI to VGA: http://www.svideo.com/ext-dvi-2-vga.html

I own the HP HDMI-to-VGA adapter and it works like a charm: HP HDMI to VGA Display Adapter | HP® Official Store

I connect it to the Envy's HDMI port to drive a projector that has only VGA input (with an additional VGA cable in between).

I could make a phone call over an HDMI cable after all it is just a bunch of copper wires. An HDMI port has more pins than a VGA port there is no reason you cant send a VGA signal over an HDMI cable.

I don't think this is correct RE the Envy's. If you look at the HP HDMI to VGA adapter, there is no need for an external power source. I think the ENVY itself outputs both digital and analog signal, so there is no digital-to-analog conversion happening in the HP HDMI to VGA adapter.

Dude I went to a local store (Frye's, I know it's not all over) and got an HDMI to DVI for like $12. Don't spend any more than $20 on a cable. ANY cable 6' or under. Never ever ever ever. Cables for Less | HDMI, VGA, RCA, Network Cable and More!

Though be aware the miniDP to VGA that I got from the Apple store does NOT work. It MUST be a powered one. That requires (typically) additional USB support. Screw that. HDMI to DVI is fine.

Edit: unless you don't want to order online, then you probably could end up spending $30 on hdmi cables. Like those Belkin ones that are decent...But that's like the most expensive cable you should be buying. Honestly, in this economy? What's wrong with these companies?

a google search for my problem brought me to this thread, i'm sorry about bringing it back from the dead

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/554607-external-monitor-problems-w-envy14-help.html

I posted in the thread above

I'm trying to link two external monitors (Samsung syncmaster b2430h) with the Envy 14 to monitors that support a DVI connection natively.

If I connect the monitor using an HDMI cable the picture quality is extremely poor and the edges of the screen are cut off.

I called the Samsung rep who told me that the monitors have the hdmi port solely for tv purposes, and must be connected by a DVI cable.

If I connect the monitors using conversion cables, to connect into the DVI ports, will they work?

What do I need to do and will a "minidisplay to DVI" and a "hdmi to DVI" cables do the job as if I had DVI ports on my laptop?

    Thank you.

HDMI to DVI would never be a problem as they are both digital. There are a few, note, a FEW device that can output an analog signal over an HDMI connection.

To reach the price threshold for the $500 off coupon, I went ahead and got the HP HDMI to VGA adapter. However, I recently tried it and it did not work - I was trying to hook it up to a HDTV via the VGA port at a lab meeting and it said invalid signal. All the TVs only have VGA cables for connecting laptops. I could bring my own HDMI cable but that would be a pain to set up as the TVs are mounted high on the walls ;p.

Also, I hope this problem is limited to TVs, as I need to use it for projectors that are VGA only.

Hey guys sorry to bring this back from the dead but what is the best way to create a VGA output from this computer. I don't care if it is mini display port or hdmi. I know it is a digital signal going to an analog signal but what is the cheapest way to output to vga.

    Thanks

    This is HP's solution:
HP HDMI to VGA Display Adapter | HP® Official Store.
Although the Sandy Bridge Envy series isn't specifically mentioned in the "compatibility" list, it should work with any version 1.4 HDMI-compliant port. I even tried it on my son's 4 year old, then-entry level laptop, and it worked flawlessly.
