is it unreasonable to hope that an HP Envy 14 Beats Edition with the first-generation i5-480 processor to last four years? What're the chances that it will make it through the third year, in terms of both internal and external components?

I'm planning on switching out the hard drive to an SSD after two years in an effort to clear out the memory and improve performance, and I keep very good care of my stuff, though I'll be in college if that make a difference.

Ultimately, what is the lifespan I can expect the Envy to last me? The reason for my asking is I'm debating whether I should pay $400+ more for the Sandy Bridge Envy. And this is a random afterthought/question, but how long can the m11x-r2 (i5) possibly last?

    Thanks in advance everyone. :)

Yup, it should last you that long, if like you said, you take care of your stuff. It is a pretty durable laptop compared to the previous HP laptops. My 2008 model lasted me 3 years with rough usage, so I am sure this should last 4.

So, it would probably be more worth it to save the $400+ for now and splurge later when I actually need a stronger laptop in grad school? Cool. :D I was just worried because the current advancements make it seem as though things are becoming obsolete faster and faster, and this is already an "older" model. XDD

    Thanks again. :) +Rep!

Oh, ok if you meant will in last, in terms of technology. I would suggest you want and get the New Envy 14. I returned mine, so I could pick up this one.

Well, I just meant technology in general is increasing its pace, as in websites and videos are becoming much more demanding whilst processors are getting stronger.

I just need it to keep up with software and Internet standards haha! I'm typing on a 2008 HP right now, and I know that it's given up on Vista and it has a hard time playing 720p videos.

Yeah, and now that 1080p is standard, I'm hearing about higher resolutions being introduced in the future.

Thats kinda weird, I play xvid 720p videos with a celeron 700 on a HDTV and the thing doesnt even lag.
So i am surprised a 2008 machine cant handle what a 2001 poor celeron can.

note : I use VLC Videolan which I understand is much better optimized than other players, that could be why.

I had a 6yr old sony vaio vgn-s260 from 2004 to late 2010. Worked great for most activites except gaming because it only had a 32mb video card. Motherboard died I think. Hoping this envy lasts that long too.
