I had gone to take a look on the new DV4's but sadly at almost $1100 there is no point and i looked around for some good ultrabooks.

HP's Folio is no good with that bottom and that god awful screen. The Acer M3 is available also but it just does not seem worth the money the touch/see feel is not there. I narrowed my search to Asus Zenbook UX31 and Macbook Air 13". The HP dealer gave me a call back about the ENVY 14 and i was loved the design and over all finish. So i ended up buying it, Now there are a few problems with the laptop:

The area under and left palm rest gets super hot when i am charging and doing net via wifi and the same happens near the exhaust.

The laptop hangs in simple games like Startrek Armada 2.

The whole thing absorbs sun light and converts it into heat energy faster than most sun-water heaters.

While I don't game often, I've been using the machine constantly and i haven't noticed any hot spots under the left palm rest.

So, without having your exact use case my first suspicion is badly applied thermal paste on your specific unit.

Maybe we can run a prime95 or furmark and compare results?

There is nothing underneath the left palm rest except the card reader and NFC chip and part of the battery. Maybe he has a different model then the spectre
