I'm a proud owner of the HP Envy 14 and i'm really liking the laptop right now ...

I noticed that when I adjust the volume (using the function keys on top) that I no longer get a visual prompt to show me how high the volume is. The weird thing is I still get a visual prompt when I turn on/off the Beats Audio and when I turn off the touchpad. Anyone know whats going on

I did uninstall a bunch of things ... so I might have uninstalled something that was keeping the volume prompt there. So it was the HP Media smart menu I guess?

Not sure how to do it with the standard HP controls, but try 3RVX (courtesy of JJB):

3RVX: Skinnable Beautiful Volume Indicator For Windows 7

Aside from looking much better, it has an option for that.

well you have to first uninstall the old volume controller.

3rvx is a whole different volume on screen display altogether.

you'd have to uninstall hp mediasmart smartmenu to get rid of the old OSD

Has anyone figured out how to keep the position of the volume display from moving whenever you switch graphics with the Envy 14? I usually have to go in and manually select the correct display profile after switching...

nah. it has to do with your screen resolution dropping to 640x480 for a split second smashing the osd up to the top left or something

well. it not minimizing and being an osd is kind of the point.

you can turn off the sound it makes in the settings.

Is 3rVX not terribly responsive for anyone else? Like, there's a delay between button press and volume change.

Also, it looks like the new version will include brightness controls:

OK good I thought it was just mine for some reason. It feel kinda laggy and sometimes doesn't respond. Also when I'm using VLC it changes VLC's volume instead of the master volume.

3rvx being laggy may depend on how you have it setup. I mean for some of the skins it doesn't change a tick when the volume goes up/down because it's increasing/decreasing the volume by too small of an amount.

you have to increase the volume 3 or 4 times for it to show a change. You, again, can mess with settings some to make it increase by the # of ticks on the skin you're using.

Wow, I'm really glad I decided to poke around in this thread. I had previously uninstalled mediasmart, and I'm very glad to find this as an alternative.

I can't wait until brightness controls is implemented, then this program will be perfect. Anyone know when the "in-development" status was posted? Just curious when it might be released.

    Thanks for the recommendation, guys!

If you're experiencing lag you have it set up incorrectly. Go into settings/hotkeys and where it says "windowsoem+xxxxx" delete the string and replace it with the actual fn buttons, after which it should read "Volumexxxx" Once you do this you should have NO lag.

I know everyone keeps mention this 3vxxxx etc, but have you guys just tried uninstalling the drivers and software, making sure all remnants are removed from your machine, then letting win7 pick drivers for you?

Soon as I got this machine I installed my own copy of windows, my brightness and sound controls are work without flaw and they display nothing, absolutely nothing when I press them. No sounds, no pop up display, nothing just like it should be. All the keyboard functions work without flaw. So just a thought.

But isn't the gui kicking people out of full screen programs? I am operating under the assumption that no one would actually want a gui, seeing a meter for how much sound you should be getting just seems odd to me.

it only is if you use the OSD that comes with the computer (HP's)

3rvx is suggested because it DOESN'T kick you out and is a volume OSD if you still want one.
