Hi. On my Envy my touchpad seems to work perfectly fine, however when i push anywhere on it, it clicks in like a button. Does this server a purpose? I am not talking about the left and right click areas on the bottom of the touchpad, but anywhere on the touchpad above those areas. I looked at the Synaptic settings but didn't see this listed as a button and it doesn't appear to do anything while in applications.

The entire touchpad is clickable, but because the trackpad is designed like this, it's easier to click on the bottom rather than the top.

    ___________________ < Trackpad surface
    ^.....................B

^ = hinge on side close to keyboard, B = button towards bottom of the touchpad.

Synaptics accidentally released a trackpad version that allows clicking anywhere on the surface, Macbook style. Synaptics has since patched this feature.

    Driver available here: http://www.mediafire.com/?zwr3c0fac925gm2

The trackpad model name is clickpad for a reason.

They wanted to get rid of dedicated clicking buttons. Honestly I would be immensely happy the touchpad just relied on taps.

You should be seeing something like the post above ^

Either it's you, or I'm experiencing a good problem

IMO being able to click anywhere is such an improvement for me. I actually prefer using this trackpad over a mouse now.

    EAFD-

Thank you very much for posting that ability to use the main trackpad surface clicking (not tapping) with the non-OEM Synaptics 7.4 drivers.

This was one of my major gripes with the E14's pad and now I can use it how I intended. Hopefully more people see your post because it's much easier for friends and family to use when they can "click" the pad like they've become accustomed to since the unipad MBP.

whelp. time to try out competent drivers for the first time in awhile.

Hopefully there is some sort of deadzone still so I can click and drag Like with how Reil's and the last driver accidentally creates (I got lucky, seems most people don't get that pseudo dead zone thing..or whatever I have where I can click and still drag with the other finger)

Has anyone else experienced the issue of not being able to disable the orange touchpad light after installing the standard 7.4 drivers?

I've gone through the settings multiple times and can't figure out how to get the light to turn off...it isn't actually deactivated as the light suggests, it's just on and sort of annoying me.

    Thanks the help in advance.

huh. sounds like the drivers are annoyed.

I've never had the button not work. Though I've always installed ontop/over the HP drivers.

Yeah, that's the main problem. I never use the disable myself, but the problem with these drivers is that you can't disable. I had the HP drivers installed before, and installing these drivers over it breaks the disable function.

Don't install the latest drivers off of Synaptics.com. Even though it's the same version, the click anywhere option is disabled. I happened to download and keep a "broken" version of the 15.2.7 drivers

I do still have a working triple tap the area in the top left and it shuts down.

I'm on the ..uh...*rolls back and checks*

    version: 15.1.6.64

    date: 9/30/2010

it was the one that added palm checking stuff or whatever that actually works (at least for me). I can left click on the button and then it forgets my finger is there (with the help of reil's) and can drag around with another finger to select text.

Mine does not show any of that stuff or works anything at all like yours does on those drivers. Whatever. Reil's and the late september drivers work fine for me

I get something kinda like your image except there's no click and drag and there's no click action. And it shows buttons at the bottom (instead of just one big pad)

Ok, so basically what a few people and I are experiencing is a nice glitch in the drivers.

I wonder how many people are able to click anywhere using the linked drivers. If you read this, could you reply and tell me if it worked?

BTW Magnus, I installed the driver directly over HP's default touchpad driver after I did a minimized recovery.

Alright. I may try that later (getting rid of the touchpad drivers).

but really if that means losing my for whatever reason large dead zone (that actually covers all of the two buttons now instead of half way to the line that marks out the top edge of the two buttons) I may just pass.

It's also not really a normal dead zone. the cursor works down there if you haven't actually left clicked/right clicked. But once you click (and so long as you don't let go of that click) it forgets your finger is down there like it's supposed to.

The older drivers didn't work that way (nor did that one that is mediafired)

well test something. Left click down but do it near the top half of stuff and then use your right finger to try to select text.

if you can do that on yours then maybe my drivers are just all sorts of "aww screw you Magus" Or the touchpad/clickpad may have been swapped for the later envys.

Because everyone was complaining about no deadzone/a tiny unworkbable deadzone for the clickpad buttons when the computer first came out (cto 1000 models)

With these drivers, I can click anywhere with one finger and then use another to move the cursor around, if the other finger isn't too close to the first finger.

These drivers make the touchpad functionally the same as a Macbook, only it's harder to click at the top.

I also just realized your name was magus, not magnus. Fail on me D:

heheheh. It happens. Dun worry about it.

About your clickpad: That's cool. I wonder how that's even possible. I was under the impression that the clickpad didn't actually have a sensor anywhere up top (it was only at the bottom under the lines for the buttons)

It was the drivers that weren't registering a click outside of the line, regardless of the state of the physical button. With these drivers, the lines are ignored. This means you can't right click anymore, unless you set clicking with 2 fingers to trigger a right click.

awww yeah. It works how yours works now.

But with a slight difference. I can't use a second finger to drag around. I CAN just drag the finger that clicked down instead.

also right click works (if you right click on the right click button portion).

also I can still click down on the left click button and then I can drag with my right finger to highlight text/whatever.

edit: to get it to work I had to uninstall my touchpad drivers, install the stock ones and then put the ones from mediafire ontop of the stock drivers.

twofingerscroll doesn't allow me to scroll any smoother than Reil's for some reason...

I ended up changing scrolling to 1 tick and upping the speed in Reil's, but it's kind of annoying when using a mouse.

I haven't gotten it to work. All I know is if you install this driver after a clean install, the disable light stays orange but the trackpad still works. Installing the stock drivers, then overwriting them makes the light turn off.

    hmmm. well damn.

that's annoying. Well at least Reil's works this time. Didn't work when installing this over the other stuff. I mean I'm sure you could make some sorta keyboard shortcut macro for it.

(in fact I've come across that I just wish I could make it be the tap in the corner stuff but I don't think it'd work. Once the touchpad is off you won't be able to tap in the corner again to turn it on)

Yeah, you'd need a keyboard shortcut to disable the touchpad from now on. Originally I was going to assign a program to a corner tap, but then I reread your post and realized I was about to make the same mistake xD

If someone here knows how to make autohotkey scripts, then you could use this:

Lifehacker, tips and downloads for getting things done

And modify it a bit to trigger when a certain hotkey is pressed.

Edit: this might just disable the mouse movement instead of just the trackpad. Not sure how many of you disable the trackpad while using an external mouse.

I have scrolling in Windows set to 1 line at a time for smoother scrolling. If you're using the default 3 lines at a time, you'll want a scrolling speed in the 60s.

I mean I could write a second thing if I knew what command brought up the synaptics personal mouse settings (since that brings up the right mouse settings after you hit cancel)

    check my attachments.

basically I need to either find the shortcut or just the thing I need to run that'll let me open up the first one.

    the "correct' shortcut doesn't work.

I mean this wouldn't be a problem if I decided "ahh screw it" and installed VB.Net and just used that.

But I Really don't want to go find VB.NET 2005 from college 6 years ago just to see if it plays nice with windows 7 64-bit

    oh ****! you're right?!

    how the...thank you synaptics?!

If this is the case I may not need to disable the thing.

Also my light turns on when I disable the touchpad, so that's a plus.

the driver not stopping reil's stuff, not a plus. Oh well. Can't expect it to actually stop reil.
