yeah I only just realized that yesterday.
still kinda blows me away that onboard is part of the damn processor.

He said GT which is the least powerful of them all. But really the 8 series corresponded to the (much later) ATI 2 series, from then to now nVidia and ATI have both had 3 generations (9 series, gt200, gt400 for nv; 3 series, 4 series, 5 series for ATI), so I don't think it is entirely unreasonable to expect, with 3 generations of Moore's law, that the current mid-end laptop chip could correspond to that generation's upper mid end chip...
*edit*
These guys are pulling an average of ~30fps with their 8800gt's in crysis (high), whereas the 5650 averages 27fps in crysis (high) according to the notebookcheck page. I looked closely and the resolutions seemed comprable between the desktops and the lappies that were benched, the only thing is their old AMD cpus might have been bottlenecking the GPUs.

AMD's been talking about it for a few years now...its kind of a shame that Intel beat them to it, imo. Less competitive market and such.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah.
feel bad for amd getting their butts whooped.
We need more competition.
Think the last AMD I used was a 1ghz T-bird in my old desktop.
heh. that thing ran pretty hot (was a nice space heater). I built it myself and didn't do the best job. Forgot the rubber shocks on the motherboard for the first couple of weeks. -
Ah, my desk uses an athlon x2 2.6ghz right now...what a terrible decision! I lag on left 4 dead with it. Can't wait to get the envy with an i5...that thing will beast all over my current performance. Even my Asus lappy's 2.0ghz core 2 mobile is faster...
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
heh.
which asus lappy do you have? I've been using a G1 for the past 3.5 years. Man I'm glad I didn't get one of the bad G1s (or well a G1S). Good 'ole go 7700. you're the b*stard stepchild of a 7600 and a 7400 but at least you won't die randomly.
..man I hope this place doesn't ban for bypassing profanity filters. -
An f8, 3650 1gb gpu, 12x10 crappy crappy crappy screen (part of the reason I want the radiance screen on Envy 14), and like 1.5 hours of battery life. Not an awesome first laptop, but it lasted me through the 36 hour record setting insanity of the nVision LAN party
-
I actually meant a DESKTOP 8800GT, not the mobile one. I was just wondering how a mobile 5650 would compare to a desktop 8800GT, which is what my current gaming rig has
-
If only someone had compared the desktop 8800gt to the mobility 5650.
Wait... -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
huh.
so crysis'll run on a dv6t:se and envy14 then?
good. I seem to have come into contact with some cd keys for it (in exchange for D2 and D2LoD cd keys) -
ah, thanks lagitiup! I thought that thread was comparing the 5650 to a mobile 8800gt. Its late and i need some sleep XD
anyways, Im glad it performs so well then. My desktop sucks except for the 8800gt in it. the amd 4200x2 is a huuuuge bottleneck. -
I highly doubt that, as I had the exact same processor in my last desktop, and it played games beautifully, including left for dead and more importantly Empire Total War was playable and is extremely CPU intensive.. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem was elsewhere.
-
I replace laptops usually right after they go out of warranty which is 1-1.5 years, there are exceptions of course when you buy pos that you can't deal with (aka m11x) and you take a hit just to get rid of it asap. With Envy I hope it will last me until next iteration of Windows 7 assuming it will be everything HP claims its going to be.
-
I hope so too. But every laptop has its ups and DOWNS.

I do think its time for a new thread, as this thread is growing larger and larger, and majority of the posts since March have been assumptions. With 2 weeks remaining, details should be leaking out, and places like NBR, Engadget, etc. should also be receiving demo units, I would hope.
-
please don't make a new thread. no new info have been leaked out. if you don't want readers getting caught up in assumptions, just edit the first post and state that the first 200 pages are speculation
-
Coriolis, I love your sig. Lmao.
Oh, and to make this not completely off topic, I think there are some people who got burned by overheating/melting nVidia chips (like me) who are buying new laptops much sooner than they anticipated. I was planning on using my current laptop for at least 3 years but now I'm having to get a new one this summer. -
Fair enough, one of the main reasons why a new thread is a good idea is that sifting through 2000+ posts, many of which are unrelated(lol, all in good fun though) isn't everyones cup of tea. But regardless, we'll see how things go.
-
My HP dv2610us is going in into its 3rd year mark. Purchased in November 2007. I hope they still make 'em like they used to.
-
been going almost 9 years with my old sony, such a great laptop. Dropped it plenty of times, still great for everything i need but i felt it was time to get a more flashy new laptop now that uni is coming up and since my xbox just died needed something that had some decent graphics power
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
Next iteration of Windows 7? I'm not sure I follow you. Do you mean Windows 7 SP1? Windows 7.1: Bobcat? Windows 8? -
I meant windows 8
-
What's wrong with the m11x? I'd be interested to know.
-
why did they decide to call in windows 7? I mean windows 95,98,2000 then XP then vista then windows 7?
What's the logic behind the names? maybe a stupid question to some but i genuinely don't know after XP where the names have come from -
Probably because they wanted to synchronize the naming structure of their consumer, business and mobile lines, i.e. Windows 7, Windows Mobile 7, etc. This is to encourage a perception of total software integration in the customer's mind, which is normally used to hearing about how hard it is to get Windows to 'talk' to other peripherals like printers, mobile phones, mp3 players, etc.
-
XP because it had experience.
Vista because it didn't last long and it was just visiting between XP and 7
7 because it's heaven
If I am correct I think it's the 7th release of windows.
*Edit - I don't think it's the 7th release, sorry. -
This wait is killing me. I really hope HP sends out some review units so we can hear from reliable sources how good or bad the Envy 14 is.
I have personally talked with a couple YouTube reviewers, and I've been informed they're in talks with HP about getting a review unit-- whether or not that happens I guess is up to HP. -
XP originally stood for the eXPerience because, iirc, Windows XP was going to be subscription-based, initially. I've not heard where they came up with Vista, but I think that using the version number was an attempt to simplify the name visually for more simple, attractive graphic art.
-
Bleck, I have an 8800gts in my desk and the athlon 5200 bottlenecks it to death. I don't know why I switched out my 7950gt, a c2d would've helped so much moar.
-
93/95/98/2000/XP/Vista/Seven/Eight/Nine/Ten...
You see why now ? -
combination of things, build, sub par screen, noisy fan.
-
There was no 93, it was 3.0 and it was 3rd iteration according to wiki. followed by 3.1
Windows 3.0 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -
no i really don't
-
Same here!
-
What about NT, ME, etc?
"derp derp" haha
-
Windows 7 is actually Windows 6.1.7000.
I think the primary reason they named it "Windows 7" was to remove the taste of Vista from consumer's mouths. The main reason Microsoft left the version number intact was so that driver support would carryover from Vista, since a new version number would require new drivers (since most, if not all drivers check the Windows version before allowing the install to proceed).
This same scheme is present in the server versions of the OS:
Windows Vista -> Windows Server 2008
Windows 7 -> Windows Server 2008r2
This comparison also serves to illustrate just how much in common the two OSes share in terms of code-base. -
NT and ME were failures, yet you can count ME instead of 93 which was 3.0 and the real first windows sticking with the current concept of it.
The point is that windows 7 is the 7th edition of window that was widely sold and used by the masses.
So yeah, derpderp. -
Windows NT was not a failure. Indeed, it was the "stable" line of Windows operating systems and was widely used in the business world. Windows XP was so successful because it was built using NT instead of "Windows-on-DOS" (95, 98, ME).
-
So it's become a discussion of Windows rather than the Envy now? Sorry, haven't checked this thread in a week, anything new? reviews? Guess not (from reading only 2 pages back)
-
Hmmm...is it normal for websites to not release any pre-production reviews before release date? If they're not going to post any soon, shouldn't HP be allowing for reviews by now or sending out models?
-
Derp derp, lol, we can on forever.
Whatever the case they named it windows 7 and that's it.
/end thread (about windows)
this envy 14 is taking too long.
I hate patience. -
HP didn't do that with the 17 rollout. I would expect that they will follow suit with the 14.
-
Better a noisy fan than a hot chasis.
-
This.
Is a laptop fan easy to replace?
I have no experience with laptops, just swapped out the HD and RAM. -
Better a well-thought-out cooling solution to negate both.
-
So, to get back on topic, what do you guys think..
Should I confirm my reservation and buy it now for 1234,05€?
They offered to include a second power adapter for 1.282,39€ total.. Is 50€ a good price for a power brick?
That would make sure I get it as soon as possible..
If something turns funny I could always return it.. -
Why do people order 2 power adapters?
I would rather order the battery slice since it already comes with a power adapter -

Looks like the bottom of the case is plastic like the 17... 1.11" thick, no blu-ray... aweee that sucks.
Those are minor, but the thing that bothers me the most is HP's brand reputation. When people see "Apple" they think premium, when they see "HP" they think cheap. Kinda like a Hyundai Mercedes lookalike, still seems cheap compared to the real deal.
Thoughts anyone? -
If such a cooling system appears in the Envy 14, it would be a first.
