Completely off topic but since we're Speaking of Sony...how about those Z series notebooks if you've got a wad of cash to drop?

If budget is not a concern, the Vaio Z from Sony is a no-brainer unless you're brain damaged imo.
-
UK specs - Quad core version (dont fear im sure there will be an I5 version)

LOL I know. If I could afford one I would not hesitate clicking that buy button. -
Not really, I guess it has some heat issues, and the small fan makes a loud whine, plus the SSD's are proprietary and can't be swapped with a traditional SSD. Not to mention relying on Sony's driver updates because rarely does Sony allow use of third party ones, including nVidia and ATi.

Aww ht...just rain all over my happy parade. LOL
Not like I can even get one of these to begin with but if I had indespensible cash, I still would. A drop of change for some. -
there better be an i5 version or i will unleash hell on HP UK... they have disappointed the consumer market one too many times
Edit: how did you find this? -
Although if they had a 50% BCB then it might be contender over the Envy 14. But I don't know if I could come up with the $2500 up front. LOL.
-
sony vaio Z is so pricey ugh

What about a mbp? lol

BEGONE ÞE DEMON!!!

It is going to be a real tough choice... the envy 14 or the acer timeline...
I just read this: Acer Aspire Timeline X laptops arrive stateside sans ULV processors -- Engadget
Oh the choices! -
mbp screen is tiny and its not very powerful.
13 at least
the 15 is just overpriced. -
found it on the uk hp website. just searched for envy 14. i have the search page up everyday just refresh it lol
-
Acers are in my experience "budget" at best. Cheap and low quality. They're great if you want the cheapest possible PC wrapped in the cheapest possible plastic, but that's about it.
Aside from the Envy 14 I've been thinking of....
MacBook Pro - I have ethical reasons to object to Apple entirely, but they do make finely crafted Pro notebook. Sadly, it is underpowered and overpriced. If HP can put an 820 Quad in a 14" notebook, Apple should be able to do it in a 15 and 17. Likewise with the weak 512mb GT330. The 13" MBP is inexcusable, still hosting a Core 2 Duo. Great construction and ancillary features, but core features are overpriced and underpowered.
Asus Bamboo 13" U33 - I wanted to buy this laptop when it was announced back in bloody January. Sadly, it has never come to pass and STILL is not available here. Even if it was a GT310 and Core i5/i7 dual core, at the price it would have been nice. Asus is a great brand but seems to take bloody forever getting their products onto the market. Too bad.
Sony Z - The big one. Small, awesome looking, best-of-the-best display. Sadly, it is godawful expensive. I would have put up with the cost of the base model but the upgrades are expensive as well. The Core i7-620 would have been fine for me in a 13" even if I couldn't have a Quad, though I'd rather have a GT335 1gb instead of a 330. Wish the extended battery was an Envy-like Slice instead of a "hump". I could forgive all this however, if they didn't force the price higher with a crappy proprietary SSD that costs a fortune, and had standardized drivers for video and other functions. I just can't justify the price premium over the Envy's better performance, though I LOVE the Japanese Z's aesthetic. -
ah ok... i just hope there will be an i5 model, i've wanted this laptop so badly after waiting for like a year for the 2nd gen envy 15 in the uk
-
I am now 60/40 Sony over HP...I'm thinking of making myself wait 'till Sunday to order the Sony, so just in case I change my mind...

I just don't like their SSD setup in the Z. Plus I like the 14.5.

1366*768 FTL
-
Haha, I've never seen FTL before...nice
I will wait and compare specs and price. Something about the hp just looks off to me. It's not as sexy as the Sony. -

That's not true, is it??? -
According to a german review the display af the 14" Acer TimelineX is of standard quality with quite low contrast.
The big advantage of Envy14 should be the high quality 1600x900 display with high brightness and contrast (according to the advertising , no reviews yet).
Yes that's true. Ati 5650 is in base config. No way to avoid it
-
But why should Apple do that? The dual cores run hot already!
You have to be realistic with your expectations when dealing with Apple. They're not going to put something out if they don't see it as making any sense or fitting with their image. They aren't going to put out a laptop with terrible battery life and terrible heat management only to satisfy a very small number of users.
I agree with the rest of your comments though. They should have at least put the half decent 335M in the 15" and 17" MBPs and the C2Ds in the 13" is a joke. -
Hot damn! I may be 65/35 toward the Envy again!
-
Does anyone know what the E14's charge connector looks like? Is it the same as the other laptops in the Envy line?
-
I thought the E13 had a different adapter compared to the E15 because it handled both power and wired network, right? Since the spec sheet of the E14 sais it needs a 90W charger, I ordered the 90W SmartPin adapter together with the E14. Since it comes with multiple pins, it lis likely to fit, isn't it?
-
I really have no idea when it comes to any of them. I just want to see what it looks like.
-
How much of a height difference would it be to stick a Blu-ray player in?
-
What do you mean?
There should be no difference as there are slimline Blu-ray drives right now.
Edit: Nevermind. Current slot loading Blu-ray drives are too big to fit into the Envy 14. -
I wonder how much thicker the slot load BD drives are compared with DVD drives? Surprised that they didn't design with that in mind. A few mm of thickness wouldn't hurt much overall, allow for a little better cooling too possibly.
-
I'm sure the OEMs are working on it right now, though with broadband speeds rising and people using their ODDs less and less, I can't see them investing as much engineering resources into that task as they originally did with CD drives and later DVD drives.
-
well i tested bing cashback with $20 gift card and did not get anything.
-
You won't. Bing's rules are no coupon, gift card, etc. will be stacked onto their purchase. I learned the hardway when purchasing a HP Media Smart Server. Just use Bing and don't get greedy.
-
Takes 1-2 days. I got an email sayin my order was declined because i typed in the wrong zip code =/
I'll try again when i get my money back. -
The slot load BD drives are 12.7mm right now. They need to be 9.5mm to fit in notebooks like the Envy 14 and the Macbook Pro.
-
Actually in some cases there are in games like crisis, cards with 512mb will start to lose FPS because there isn't enough space to store stuff while it waits to get processed. that was actually a major problem a year ago trying to run crossfire 4770(desktop) and playing crisis. This problem can also arise in CAD programs when you have either alot of parts or details on your screen. so that is probably why your department requires 512mb of gpu ram
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
I'm planning on buying as soon as the 14 can be customized on the website. Assuming the BCB is 10% when I buy, is there any way for me to gain leverage to bump it to 25% if the discount goes back up that high? Would I need to order again at 25% and cancel the 10% order (thus pushing back my ship date
), or do you think it would be possible to talk an HP rep into "upgrading" me? If I'm going to rebuy and cancel anyway, it's in HP's best interest to avoid that mess and just give me the 25%, isn't it?
-
Does HP have a payment plan and if so does it work with BCB?
-
Okay so after a bit of research... I got a better way to say my point.
I highly doubt that the envy 14 clickpad is the new suite 3 synaptic clickpads.
(With palm sensing technology, and scrybe enabled features and etc.)
Can any current envy users testify that the clickpad is improved more via the hardware update (like suite 2 or suite 3 synaptic clickpads) or software? -
they money isn't coming from them. or I guess it would be called HPCB?
-
Lets say we order as soon as possible on Sunday morning. what kind of dates are we looking at to receive the envy?
The Envy 17 was first configurable on May 19th, with an estimated build date of June 1st. Thats about 13 days for it to be built, and then 2 days (if you have the premium shipping) for it to get to you. So in IDEAL situations if we order on the 27th we should get it by July 12th - 13th.
A lot of the early adopters for the E17 experienced delays though, lets hope HP doesnt make the same mistake twice! -
hmm amazon.ca has a envy 14 up that many other canadian retailers also have up for preorder. The only difference is the 500 premium amazon wants for it
is this normal?
-
Is there concrete evidence the base screen isn't 1600x900? Other than the one tech page that goes against every other press release we've seen?
-
???
Amazon.com: HP ENVY 14-1010NR 14.5-Inch Laptop: Computer & Accessories
Price: $1,199.99 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. -
It seems to me that the only country that doesnt get screwed is the States.
The E15 in canada still has a $300+ premium on it. This is why Im ordering from the US online store and going to pick it up. Getting it shipped here isnt worth the extra 500 dollars that could be spent on upgrades. -
Kitsune is referring to the Canadian amazon site.
-
Hah. Canada and California. Easy to confuse both.
-
How safe would you guys think it would be to ship it through UPS to Canada?
If the info I've gotten on their site is correct it should be about 100$. The price im not worried about, Will it be safe? -

so far it looks like the radiance screen is in the base price. which is amazing.
