Then what do you expect I should get, I've looked at every other company that's making laptops and there's nothing that will do what I want at 13 or 14 inches. So for a thousand or so dollars I can't really buy just something else, which really sucks.
-
Possibly the Acer or the new Asus JT series? I don't know what your requirements are, but if you have a hard stop deadline and the HP isn't available, I don't know what choice you will have but to either go without or buy something else.
-
Sorry for the off topic question but..
I am looking to buy a HD 1080p external monitor for my Envy 14 and Xbox 360 to use in college, but I am not sure what connection cables I need for both of them! It probably is a stupid question, but I am not too tech savy =( Thanks in advance for your help.
Most likely this monitor.. HP 2159m 21.5" Diagonal Full HD Widescreen LCD Monitor | HP® Official Store -

You will need a HDMI cable for the envy and probably for the xbox. Not sure on that one because I don't own one. -
Yep HDMI cable will cover them both! unless u have an xbox from 2006 or earlier which is when they didnt come with a HDMI port.
-
there's always the possibility of lightly overclocking
really in the end it's gonna depend on exactly what they charge for the upgrades for me.

The most intensive thing I plan on doing is gaming, and with that small a difference between them I'm all for not paying HP for an minimally useful upgrade -
hi! I have been following this thread for a long time. There are actually two models of envy 14 in Singapore according to the HP website. Both models have 4gb ram.
envy 14-1008tx
envy 14-1009tx -
Looks like the 520 is the min. config there. I can only hope that's the base $999 CPU for the US also. I really don't want to have to decide whether the upgrade from the 430 is worthwhile.
-
Illegal Operation Notebook Evangelist
Hmm, so they are putting an i7 in these...well at least in singapore eh? Wonder if the offerings will be the same state side. -
it's not the base for the US... it will most likely be the 430 or the 450 since on amazon the envy 14-1010nr has a i5-450m
-
I think the common CPU will be the i5-450M which is the same clocks as the i5-520M but does not have the IO virtualization. Atleast, that will be the common pre-config.

I pre-ordered the 1010NR model from Amazon and I have the 500 GB Momentus XT drive in hand. I am curious to see how this all plays out. -
If 450m is base CPU, then that $1199 price tag isn't so great, because what would justify the $200 cost increase other than 6GB RAM and 500GB HD, unless they're charging $150 for a 4GB module.
-
Yea 450m or 520m, comm suite's improvements lacking is no big deal unless you're uncompressing or encoding all day long (and even then, to get the 70% benefits of the new AES your application has to be using those "new AES instructions".) I don't even know if winrar does use that. If the software you are using hasn't been rewritten/recompiled to use the new features, it runs as before.
If the jump from 450m to 520m costs more than 50 bucks Im passing on it. -
oh nice I hadn't heard of the 450m. 2.4ghz but turbo only goes to 2.66 instead of 2.93. Not a big deal is it?
-
Ho well... I don't really care for less than 300mhz. If that gives me less heat and more battery life ahah.
-
somebody pointed out above that the 520 pulls less power over the 400-series chips. I'd be interested in more battery life, but I'm not too sure I'll need the extra CPU power. I guess all of this is pointless without the upgrade pricing.
-
Base is still the 430M. The upgrades to reach the $1199 price tag are the CPU ($50), hard drive ($50) and memory ($100) over the $999 base (430, 4 GB, 320 HDD).
-
We don't know that as a fact. Nothing indicates 430m as base. Only info we have is 1010NR which is a 450m. I'm assuming base will have 250GB as well since the Australian Envy brochure indicates 250GB/320GB/500GB or 160GB SSD option. But again, everything is speculation until HP releases more info or opens up ordering. Preferably the latter.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
450m has a faster dmi system bus than the other chips.
not sure how that'll compare to the .33ghz extra of turbo mode for the 520m -
Yes, nothing is a fact until proof of delivery, but, the processor offerings should parallel the Envy 17. The US brochure for the Envy 14 indicates a 430M as base.
There are two pre-config models for the North America Release.
Envy 14-1010NR WQ784UA#ABA
Envy 14-1011NR WQ786UA#ABA
They are the same price but I only have the 1010NR specs. Not sure what is different on the 1011NR, yet. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
true but you never know.
Hell HP may say "screw it, this thing costs $1199 base now" -
Yes that is quite strange. Almost twice as fast, wonder what's up with that? Also it says chip is to be launched Q3 '10, which is July, but it also says its already been launched.
-
this makes more sense since the other envys are well over 1k
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it may make sense but I hope it really is 999.
also the 450m seems to be a 2nd gen or so arrendale (or just a later generation arrendale) and that's why it has the higher DMI bus.
...which apparently is how it communicates from north bridge to south bridge.
still not sure what the heck it actually does or what that means or if that mean that the motherboard architecture can handle quicker ssds or something weird. -
Any hope that HP would add in a Momentus XT drive as an upgrade? I've been hearing good things about them. Not sure I want to drop the coin on a full blown SSD yet
-
But are you going to be using any multicore intensive apps? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I dunno. Dolphin/PCSX2 are mutli-core intensive.
Reencoding video hopefully uses 2 cores + the 2 extra threads/cores that i5s have. (I hope virtualdub isn't dumb enough to screw that up)
also That turtle is 'bout to pass the finish line. -
Alrighties. Better go do some reading. Probably see ya guys in a few hours.
-
Good luck to everyone waiting on one of these. Hope HP doesn't make you wait too long on the 27th. Is Bing Cash Back stilll at 25%. Anyway, good luck and congratulations to all prospective new Envy 14 owners.

Does anyone know if there are two fans in the Envy 14?
-
i hope there is but for some reason i doubt it... heat is becoming a concern, where the ODD is, is where one of fans on the envy 15 were so i'm not too sure
-
Then its got a faster communication speed between gpu & any other component (southbridge) and ram/cpu (northbridge).
-
looking at the design I am pretty sure its a single fan set up
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
Not sure how many fans it has.
I do know that both the right side and rear vents are exhaust vents. -
will the hp envy 14 be able to play sc2 on max settings flawlessly?
-
95% sure that it will. I've heard of people playing SC2 on an Nvidia 210M maxed out with no lag. If the minimum required card for SC2 is a 9800 Pro which I bought USED for $75 back in 2006, then I'm pretty damn sure the ATI 5650 will chug through it no problems. -
How do you know "that both the right side and rear vents are exhaust vents"?
I was hoping HP remedied most of the obvious design flaws of the Envy 15. HP put the backlight keyboard in, they put the optical drive in, and they forgot what keeps it running. They forgot how we use laptops in many different ways.
If you are correct (I hope your not for Envy 14 users' sake), that means all air intake is through the tiny strip on the bottom of the laptop. That is horrible design and will greatly infringe upon normal daily use of a laptop.
Woops, my leg is covering the vent.
Oh dont set that down on the couch!
Please move the laptop 4 inches to the left so it can ventilate properly.
Oh you cant use this laptop on a bed, go use a table!
These are the biggest complaints I have with my Envy 15. If both the intake vents are on the bottom of the Envy 14 & the touch pad is another amateur attempt at the multi touch... HP will have fooled us with its choice wording no longer.
HP will have waisted the whole Premium branding fiasco for good. -
What's premium then? I don't think any laptop is meant to be used on top of frabric. Even MBPs have cooling problems.
I don't mind the intake being on the bottom, the whole idea of hot air rising seems to work with the cooling system instead of against it like in the MBP's case. -
Photoshop 5 among others. Also, I'm buying a laptop to last 3+ years, and during that time I hope more apps begin making use of the multicores.
In a side note, although I've decided that the 520m is a definite upgrade over the 430m, I haven't been able to find any direct performance comparisons between the 450m and 520m yet. Please let me know if you find any.
Thanks! -
I do believe my boyfriends MBP plays all day and night on the couch (leather), lounge chair & ottoman (fabric), and our bed (fabric) because there are no vents on the bottom.
Many fast ultra thin laptops are warmer by nature, but not all have "cooling problems." This is a very potential "cooling problem" by lack of design.
Yes thats true. The whole idea of a quality metal construction lends to another simply wonderful inherent property of metal...the idea of heat induction so there is no need for vents on the bottom of a laptop.
-
Graphic card switching laptops on energy saving mode can be used on any kind of fabric, because if they are designed properly they don't use the fans at all for 90% of the time. My current UL80Vt never uses its fan longer than a few seconds every 10 minutes unless I'm gaming or watching high def content over 720p in this case it starts exhausting constantly at around 10% of its maximum fan speed wich is barely a problem provided you don't cover the exhaust holes with a pillow or something. See the good side of the envy... you have two vent holes to accidentally cover before it starts badly overheating instead of one ahah.
It's obvious you'll have those issues on an envy 15 cause no switchable integrated graphics = iddle radeon HD which prodiuces constant heat that needs constant fan work to remain cooled.
That said once you've got vents running, fresh air will somehow get inside by any means, even if the bottom is covered. What's on the other side bad with putting any laptop on a fabric is simply the fact that the fabric itself will start heating up (because it cannot move) while the warming air between a table and a laptop will go up and leave room for fresh air. -
It's final, no cashback on gift cards. I got a refund though.
-
how did you get refund? they specifically stated no refunds on gift cards.
-
I called them and said i was lied to.
Nevermind, after a while they offered me $150 dollars back. They said it'll process monday or tuesday. I guess I'll see how that goes. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
some vid or something said they were both exhaust and that yeah...the tiny vents on the bottom are intake (and they somehow aren't blocked by the slice) I think it was so and so posts back in this topic or in another one. We'll find out though. -
I don't care that you use your laptop on those surfaces, it's more likely to get dust in the airflow and thus get inside your system.
The Macbook Pro has a cooling problem because of it's design. You complain about not using the HP Envy 14 on your lap but then readily admit that the MBP is just fine, even though this magical induction would make it way too hot to use! Form over function just like the iPhone 4.
Having a solid metal bottom is dumb for two reasons, heat and airflow. The MBP has to work against the flow of air for it's intake and I wouldn't be surprised if that's a factor in why the bottom gets so hot!
It sounds like you're trying to come in here and spew BS. -
^ don't feed the troll
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
*shrugs* MBPs get hot though.
especially that one with the i7.
that maxed out at like 100 * C or something.
and only ran while on its side.
edit: I mean sure I think they were doing some sorta cpu benchmarking program with it but daaamn. -
ok, so you didn't get the refund? I tried with them too over chat and they woudln't refund me, although it was just $20, so not a big deal
