Since HP refreshes their Envy 15 lines, lets talk about it here
(Addition)
Information from the previous "New Envy 15 with i5" thread.

I'll be the first to add on in here
Hoping my machine is what I expect it to be, rather than what I'm afraid it might be
-
I honestly don't see the point of this topic. You could have at least used the opening post to detail the envy refresh and have a faq. This just seems lazy.
-
Who will get their new Envy the soonest? I'm most interested in hearing impressions of the new i5 versions and getting some of the unknowns resolved. I know there will be many that receive theirs before me, because mine says it will ship on the 20th and I went with the free shipping. I know some of you rich or impatient s shelled out for the 2-day! -
Mine's shipping on the 19th, but it's also free shipping.
-
I have 2 ordered:
1 says ESD 1/18 w/ free shipping and the other 1/19 w/ 2 day shipping.
We shall see -
I don't see the point of this thread either
Maybe an i5 thread would be better. -
Well, would be good to separate it since the other one is like almost 500 pages long.
-
Once the new ones start shipping I'd think it'd be a good thing to continue on in here, especially considering the hardware is a fair bit different in the Gen. 2 machines.
-
future owner here :]
Mine's shipping out on the 18th
I got the anti-glare screen with the i5-520m.
Looking forward to the unit :] -
Man, I'm totally watching this thread. While my current laptop is just fine, there's better available and that just kills nerds like myself.
DO WANT NOW! -
I'm thinking of skipping the dual SSD's in the Envy 15, and getting an 1.8" 80GB G2 and cramming in a 640GB HDD on top of it. It wasn't designed for this, but I think it could be done.
-
-
oooh
mine ships on the 19th...I've grown weary of speculation, its time to simply wait and see. Is shipping time long? I suppose they're shipped from china? So maybe a week to the east cost of the usa?
-
cool article on windows 7 and its ability to utilize multiple cores (specifically 4 or more):

Loved the tittle, made my Envy feel sad...
-

Depends on the shipping you chose. Mine shipped right on time. Some others that ordered the same day as me, got it delayed twice (and a coupon for the inconveniences)
I am really looking forward to details on this one, to see if I should hit the wall or just continue to brag about my Envy lol jk jk -
I don't think the shipping option you choose has anything to do with delays.
-
So where is the next coupon? Since a lot of people missed the last one heeh

I think now with the i5 release, I might end up with that instead of the i7. I think the whole heat complaint is a concern for me. Unless they have the i7-6xx series which is 2 core + HT. I think that has higher cache than i5m but same core amount.

$300 off coupon is being accepted by the Shop HP website again, just put in my Envy order. Think the coupon stated that it's valid for the next 1400 orders.
Current orders seem to have a build date of Jan 28, at least mine does.
Is it against forum policy to post the coupon code here? In any case one google search and you should find it. -
Hello there Mago and welcome to the NBR Forums, congratulations on your purchase!
There is also a 350 off coupon around here if anyone else is interested. Might want to call HP and bargain. -
-
-
What do you mean bt "heavy" altoid?
But I disagree, temps on my i7 are quite good when not stressed. -
-
Happy owner here....
-
People, can I add in 1 more 1.8" SSD 60GBs for booting along with the single 320Gbs 7200RPM HDD originally from HP ?

i5 or i7? What do you call CPU intensive?
With the i7, what used to be intensive, using CATIA V5 R19, a standard HP 90W adapter was able to charge the battery and run with no throttle, but the GPU was fairly passive. As long as you dont game, you can, and keep the brightness on a lower level, there is no problem, but if stressed those 90W are easy to hit with the i7. -
autocad 2009
pro/e
matlab
google sketchup
adobe creative suite
NI komplete
cubase sx
NI traktor
MS Office 07
and occasionally (certainly not professionally)
farcry
assassin's creed
crysis
EDIT: and if I could do those, with a 90W adapter that'd be mighty spiffy. -
AutoCad I am almost certain it is possible. CATIA is heavier and I had no problems.
Pro Engineer I have never used, but if it taxes the CPU and GPU it might be a no-go or you get some throttle due to the PSU not being able to feed the Envy.
Matlab is extremely CPU intensive, leave the GPU rest, and you should be fine.
Google SketchUp is very light, no problems there normally.
Office is very light and no problems there.
Not sure about NI software, but depends on what it taxes.
Gaming with the 90W PSU and i7 id s no go most likely. It may run, but I would rather not. Toping the PSU cant be good...right? -
NI stuff wouldn't use any gpu at all as far as I know. I'll just lug around the 120w monster hehe
I'm pretty excited to have a video card that can handle autocad and pro/e, its tough trying to render objects just to have colors essentially blink on and off so my gpu can cope, lol.
And it may not take over an hour to render a google sketchup video anymore...my last project I had to cut the frame rate and colors on a video because I didn't have 4 hours to wait for it to compile, it probably would've only taken minutes on the envy...i'll find out I still have the files on my external.
FWIW pro/e is a lot like CATIA. You can make complex 2nd shapes and extrude them to specific 3d dimensions then throw that ish into a CNC machine and have a new toy in minutes! -
A poll has been posted, what model are you getting? http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=451377
-
-
-
Fair enough.. I do think that for flights and airports, where you are not going to stress the laptop, the 90W can come in handy, instead of the monster I carry around...
-
true, i was looking at kensington adaptors today, you might want to check them out if you need something smaller
http://us.kensington.com/html/6612.html
of course thats the USA page which would be useless if you're not regularly plugging into a USA outlet. -
I can always use an adapter...that is what I do normally in order to charge the notebook here, I have an US model in France...lol
-
-
Actually, most of the rest of the world has standardized adapters. It is just the US/UK that do it all wrong.
-
What are your guy's estimates that the 2nd Gen Envy (with i5) will get on 3dMark06? 8000-9000?
Also, what do you guys think the maximum battery life could be on the Envy 15 with the i5 (Wifi off, bluetooth off, minimum brightness + only Microsoft Word on)?
Thanks,
Quad -
