Did the price drop on the Envy 15? Every couple days I price one out and don't buy it :) It looks like the upgrade from 720QM -> 820QM is now $200, I think it used to be $250. And 4GB -> 16GB is $600 now, I think that used to be more?

    @auslander

Nope the pricing looks the same as it's been for months.

Good news is I just got emailed a new coupon code for the envy 15 and 17 for $200 off NBA5193862 .

It says limited quantity available so act quickly these normally don't work for long.

EDIT: Here is another one for $25 off SVMB39487 Not sure if you can 'stack' them.

Edit 2: expires 6/26 or after 1300 uses...

Dammit, you're not helping me not spend money :) Very tempting, that $200 almost pays for another 8GB of memory (not from HP)

You mention things about a new manual and etc...

is there a refresh coming out for the envy 15? 9although the 14 is about to be released?)

My envy 15 is here finally hoorah!

JJB, when you post those temperatures of your CPU being in the mid 30s or so, are you using a cooling mat or something like that? Are you using a power saver mode too?

I have Core i5 540M and mine idles at 45 degrees or so.

Though amazingly, I can use this envy on my lap in high performance mode without sterlizing myself. It's actually cooler than my older macbook pro 15".

    @Sylphic

No those are my normal idle temps with light usage and the windows 7 'balanced' power plan. Right now I only have IE8 open with 9 tabs and have been basically returning emails, downoading several large (~4GB) image proofs from my photo printing company and general browsing. After 2 hours of this here are my temps (F .28 and ATI 10.6, room temp 67F):

    temps1.PNG

One easy way to check if your CPU is actually idling is to leave Task manager open and see how quickly the CPU usage drops to '0'% after you stop doing things, it should be within 1 to 2 seconds. If it continuously fluctuates from 0 to 3-4% then something is running in the backround. From the factory with all the crapware from HP the CPU never truly idles due to all the backround processes.

Edit: FYI I have a total of 48 processes with all programs closed (except Task manager)

glad to say I'm keeping my Envy 15 Beats edition. The 17 was fun to play with for a day or 2, but dang it, the 15 is just nicer all around.

lesson I learned: don't whine about the i7 being too hot with the 15, its really not bad at all compared to the 17. not bad at all.

I just did a fresh install of Win7 and noticed my temps are about 10c hotter then before. Ambient temps are the same, now my system runs at 50-58 on Idle. CPU usage is 1-5%. Running the latest BIOS.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hey guys I was wondering if the heat and battery life issues are still present on the Gen 2. apparently there's also a blank screen issue though I'm not sure if it was just a Gen 1 thing or not. Reason I'm asking is because there's a huge thread on the hp forums about the blank screen issue but there wasn't much talk about it here. I just wanna know if it's worth it to get a envy 15 now or wait for the 14

    thanks in advance

theres honestly no issues with the gen 2 with the i5 that I know of...The thing runs cool and only gets a little loud when playing graphic intensive games (bad company 2). I have a different black screen issue with mine and i think its my fault... I use my 24in lcd when im at home so I have my profile set not to sleep when the laptop is shut but when I hibernate my machine and pack up for my friends house and then turn it back on...black screen...but if i type my password in and press enter it works normal again...might just be my situation

thanks for the reply :) I just find it odd that some people have awesome temps vs some who have really bad temps...and some people who are reporting blank screens after many RMA's and others who haven't had any issues.

user that are usually complaining about bad temps are the one that own the core i7 laptop. i dont know about the i5, but some users in NBR says the system runs cool and even on idle.

my laptop are never off the desk or on my lap, so i dont complain about heat on the bottom.

the only heat complain is when playing light or intense game. The keyboard gets warm and the palmrest gets hot. the fan noise does get loud (normal).

i do recommend notebook air cooler too keep the temp down, just make sure u get the correct air flow and the fan placement on the cooler that matches the air intake on your laptop.

    NZXT Cryo S

The vents are aligned perfectly with the fans on the NZXT Cryo S.

ill prefer the NZXT Cryo S, due to the fan placement on the cooler. the cooler that you have linked only have 1 large fan in the center. the envy fans are on the left and right side.

FYI, there is really no need for any cooler with any of the i5 models. Once properly setup (clean install) they barely even get warm when under full load.

Does anyone else have the funny issue of the battery meter in windows 7 not displaying estimated battery time? Mine only shows a %tage. It's a minor niggle, but I wish it would show approximately how much time I had left.

When I had mine, it did not show battery life either..

a clean install should be easy, just boot from a windows cd or USB thumb drive,

and use the custom install to wipe everything.

If your looking for a alternative to windows failure of a battery meter try a google search for battery bar.... It does 110% better job then windows at predicting your battery time left and for a few bucks more you get a premium version with tons more options...but the free version is still kick @ss. I bought it for my laptop and use the free version on netbook and its perfect!

    link to batterybar

    EDIT:
Its onsale for a buck so ya... theres no excuse not to upgrade! ... Just bought a licence for my netbook :)

I would get the pro version if you have the slice battery as the program gets a little confused when you plug it in on the free version. If you have pro then option up options menu and tell it to use separate profiles per power scheme and if you did not download the beta use it and then the slice gets calculated quite nicely....

Ya I found out about battery bar from another user a while back in the hp forums... and get pro..its a dollar....its like the price of a candy bar but lasts for a lifetime...really..get it....not kidding....its cheaper then a softdrink at a store......really if you must be cheap if you dont get it.....

while on the topic of batteries, lemme bring up a question that I still have: is draining it down to about 70% and then plugging it back up again considered a full charging cycle? if I do this repeatedly am I damaging the battery life? I ask this because most of the time when I unplug it I only use it for about 30 minutes before I go to the outlet again...

I do the same thing a lot and never worry about it, it is a "smart charger" with a "smart pin" after all :p I actually forget where the info on battery charging is located, either the SD card user manual or on the HP website on the drivers and support pages. There is quite a bit of info available with tips and guidelines for how to get the longest battery life, charging and storage guidlines etc. Sorry I can't post the link right now, I am on a very slooooow WAN connection that cannot even keep up with my typing, so going to the HP site would take like 30 minutes to load.....

Has anyone tried software raid in Linux on the dual-ssd Envy? It looks like TRIM is not supported if you use the hardware raid, but what about md-raid on Linux? Would TRIM be available then, since the actual disk devices would still be visible to the OS?

Even though it's not hardware RAID, it should still perform *very* well.

The manual and drivers for a new model of Envy 15 are on the hp support site. Which means it should be coming soon... I am just curious if anyone has a better idea of when

I preordered an Envy 14 and will run Linux on it. Now someone posted in the Envy 14 thread, that the 1st gen Envy 15 models did not have ACPI compliant BIOS, so thermal management needed the HP crapware for Windows and would not work with Linux.

Can someone please tell me, whether the 2. gen Envy 15 BIOS is ACPI compliant? This is a vital information for me...

In fact, the 740 and 840 are already showing as available options on the E17 config pages, so it shouldn't be too much longer for the E15. Wonder if the 840 models will be endorsed by George Foreman. :D
