If you are running raid, you can either check your drives through interl's rapid storage manager or restart your computer and right before you see the HP logo press Ctrl + i to enter the raid information menu.
If you are on a single drive a simple check in Device Manager will tell you the all the drive information.
-
Good to know, thanks.

All G2 drives support TRIM. The firmware update just makes them run a bit faster, but you have to take the drives out of the laptop to update them.
-
If you're going to go that route, it's cheaper (at least initially) to go the 160GB + 250 GB drive route in the Envy15, then "sell" the 250gig drive and buy a larger spindle drive. In the long run, it might be cheaper to buy the dual 160gig SSD's, as the 160 gig drive HP sells retails for about 400 dollars, but that will be highly dependent on whether you find a buyer. It's higher risk, but will probably net you more money back in your pocket. Plus, the market for the 1.8" drive is not as large as the market for the 2.5" laptop drives.
Then again, I can't find any 1.8" spindle drives on newegg right now... -
Anyone try the new touchpad drivers (from August 13) ?
I wonder, does updating the driver erase all your setting configs? -
Hello all,
I want your opinion, I have the envy listed below, and wanting a ssd. Should i get the g2 160 gig from Intel now, or do you all think the new g3's will be that much faster and cheaper ?
Envy 15
-i7 q720
-Radeon HD4830
-500 Gig
-6 gig 1333
-Led ultrabright view -
Well according to your specs that is a gen 1 envy which would come with the g1 Intel drives
-
-
Its a gen 2 1050nr, and i dont have a ssd i was wondering if i should get one now or wait
-
actually its a gen 1 if it has a ati 4830.... anyways if you need a ssd now get one... if its not important to you this minute wait for the tech to come down a little in its price

If you can wait about 4-6 months, you will be able to get a larger drive for cheaper, either from Intel or another manufacturer. Not sure whether they would be any faster. The X18-M G2's that came factory installed seem to be quite fast, I think the Q4 upgrade on the leaked Intel roadmap suggests the 160GB X18 and X25's will sell at the 80GB price point and the 300GB will sell at the 160GB price point. -
I have recently purchased a new ENVY 15 with a 160 GB SSD and a 250 GB HDD. I want to be able to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu with this new computer in the most efficient way using both drives. Could somebody lay out the best way to partition each drive and where to install each OS, along with corresponding locations for games/programs/documents/etc. Does anyone have a setup that works great for them on a similar machine?

So I was checking HP parts ordering online and they list the cable at $50 and the caddy at $50 as well. So $100 (without the drive) to move from 1.8 to 2.5.
What kind of cable is that? Isn't $50 for a cable exaggerated?
Does the above sound correct?
cable's part: 576828-001
caddy's part: 576827-001 -
anyone got a clue?
It almost always happen after a black screen, a problem that occurs very seldom for me now. -
I thought I would give an update on my shipment.

Notice the actual ship date and when it was expected to be delivered. How the hell they got it from Shanghai to "out for delivery" in three days blows my mind. I did not pay for a faster shipment. Just the standard free shipment it came with. I will chime in if it actually does get in my hands today. -
Might be a stupid question but reformatting and doing a fresh install of windows won't effect my warrenty will it?
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
no, not at all. -
Does anyone know if the motherboard supports USB Boot (Boot from USB drive)?
-
yes, it does.

I have installed and used with no problems Catalyst 10.6 and 10.7 over the past couple of months.
However, recently I tried to launch the catalyst control center and it was no longer in my system tray and I could not find CCC.exe anywhere on my computer.
Where would it be located? I couldn't find it in any of the ATI folders.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it installs successfully but I cannot launch the CCC.
I tweaked my services and startup applications to reduce my boot time about a month ago and I think perhaps there is some service that needs to be enabled or restarted.
I could not find any Catalyst services that were running or stopped or disabled in the services menu.
I read that this sometimes happens with a service called software licensing protection that needs to be stopped and restarted. I tried that and Catalyst still did not appear in the system tray or in process explorer or the services menu. -
Oh my god...it is in my hands. Hats off to FedEx for the amazing turn-around time. I have yet to open it but will do shortly. My first order of buisness is to do a fresh install of Windows. Does anyone have any advice on stuff to look out for?
Regards
Chad -
Very cool. Check it closely for any physical problems/imperfections. Before doing your fresh install, you might want to do a system backup to disc, as well copy the drivers folder and all updated drivers/bios/ati sw (from the drivers thread) onto an external backup.
After the fresh install, you may want to install disk, cpu, vid benchmarking software to see operating temps and make sure it's running as expected. The gpu clock tool is worth checking out, as are the calibrated color profiles (for glossy screen) posted waaaaay earlier in this thread. -
I would watch out for any bees in the package... along with any friends or family who want one and be willing to jack yours
other then that a reinstall and installation of the drivers from the drivers thread and your good to go
-
Remember to plug the CD/DVD into the SATA/USB port, not the regular usb's.
-
I used the regular straight usb to install windows..... it might have been a defect on the one persons envy
-
Ugh...I was trying to avoid buying an external drive but I think there is no way of getting around it. I was going to use a USB drive to install a fresh OS but then realized I need an external drive to burn the recovery disks.
Unless someone know how to create iso's.
-
I think hp has a tool that will place the recovery on the a flash drive but I cant remember if it worked or not
-
If I'm understanding you right, download an ISO from a torrent site (or maybe you can get it from microsoft?) and then use the "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" from the microsoft website. If you have a product key then it's not illegal, I think.
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
isn't there a way to use the recovery manager to burn your own recovery disks to a large .ISO file instead of to CDs or DVDs?
-
Nope....It immediatly stop from doing anything and tells you that you need an optical drive. I actullly talked to HP and the confired the same thing.
-
Why the hell can't I figure out how to get into my bios......f8,f12,...?
-
Nevermind: Esc -> F9
-
Hey Chad. Just got my Envy also and doing the USB re-install right now as we speak (well, technically, I'm still DL-ing the file to the USB). Hope this site helps you:
https://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool
PS. I had decided to cheap out and get Home through HP, and upgrade to Professional on my student status since it was cheaper that way. I got that link along with the iso link in the email response after purchasing it. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Can you explain the benefit of upgrading to Professional vs. Home Premium? If I understand correctly, it is a bit better for corporate security and can handle RAM up to 192 GB or something?.
-
Yes, it will fit (but you'll have to do significant disassembly... look elsewhere in the thread). And it looks like it's decent performance from a quick Google. Not a bad price/GB, currently the same price on Newegg.com (where I buy most of my stuff, I trust them).
-
I have the i7 version which has USB3.0. The only USB2.0 port is the SATA/USB. When you try to install win7 through the USB3 ports you get an error stating that Microsoft does not have drivers for the CD/DVD.
-
So,
My envy appears to be flawless at this point. No fit and finish problems, no dents, no cpu wine yet, and etx. I finished my fresh install of windows this morning and now am on to the optimization and benchmarking phase of things. I do have question and am looking for guidence.
1) What benchmarks should I run to insure things are working proper.
2) How do I go about setting my power managment.
REgards
Chad -
for #2. start --> control panel --> power options
-
Sorry I should have been more clear. I was looking for recommended power plans and optimization.
-
The power plans are your preference. I personally have a very strict one for my i7 while on battery and a very liberal one for AC power.
Run 3Dmark06, PCmark, memtest, and a couple of HDD benchmarks if you have SSDs. Test your wifi too (compare it to a device you currently use and know works correctly). -
Sounds good....I will run some of those benchmarks and post my results in hopes some users can give me feed back.
How do you turn the bluetooth off and on?
REgards
Chad -
A few people have posted their CrystalDiscMark results in this thread, so if you use that for one of your HDD checks, you will have other results for comparision.
You should have a systray icon for the bluetooth adapter, which has on/off toggle.
edit: For power config, the critical battery level can't be dropped below 7% or so within the windows gui. However, if you want to eek out some extra battery life it can be set to zero. There's some discussion of that in this thread. The command is :
powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_BATTERY BATACTIONCRIT 0 -
I might be missing something but when I right-click the bluetooth icon and select options there is no on/off. The only thing I can think might shut it off is the option to toggle off the allowance of bluetooth devices to connect. Is this correct?
Regards
Chad -
I turned off my Bluetooth by typing "View network connections" in the Start menu search, right-clicking on Bluetooth Network Connection, and then select Disable.
-
Thanks. I just did the same. Is there anyway to actually see if it is on or doing and work? Or is disabling it the only way to know for sure?
Regards
Chad -
Not sure why you don't have a bluetooth icon in the tray (see pic). You can also try right-clicking the battery icon in your tray and check the "windows mobility center".
-
I guess you could always try any Bluetooth device and see if it detects anything.
-
I sent in my laptop on 07/29/2010
It's still waiting for part arrival.... This is worest service happened to me ever
It said expected deliever date 08/19/2010
But nothing update at all, I would guess my laptop delay again.
so it's about a month for repair service. >,> -
Hey...I have yet to find a simple disable option. I have the same bluetooth icon as you do but when I right-click it this is what I get...
