The only thing I can think of is the drivers, because safe mode doesn't load them. I'm wondering if anyone doesn't have the Intel Rapid Storage/Matrix Storage installed and could test, or perhaps from a new install.
-
-
Good idea, unfortunately there is no way to uninstall the RST driver short of a new clean install. Also look back at my previous post, I edited it to add a new CDM run based on the other thread I was reading, and it appears the issue may be a CPU power state setting. Counter intuitively the 4K (and other) W/R speeds improve significantly if you run Super Pi in the backround while running CrystaldiscMark because it overides the power saving CPU state.....

hey guys im facing very high temperatures on my envy 15 while playing games ,,,wen playing warhead the temperatures went as high as 86 for the cpu and 76 for the gpu.....should i be worried.....?the fans just roar at full speed...and very loud....is it fine to keep playing or shd i stop.....? what can i do to reduce the temperatures....?guys help me out..thks
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
its normal
-
@MM are such high temp common....?can i continue playing even wen the fans are at full speed
-
well considering you have the i7 its about 10ish c hotter then the i5...

yes you can

I've been wondering for a while now why the Envy models suffer this SSD speed reduction. I hope someone figures out a fix. I'll keep an eye on this thread to find out... -
People need to submit a formal query to HP requesting that adjustment of the C1E function be added in a future BIOS update for at least 2 reasons:
1- Allows SSDs to run at optimal speeds
2- Gets rid of the static/hissing noise that comes from the CPU in low-powered state.
Alternatively, someone may be able to program a script that installs in Windows and runs during POST which disables C1E. From my limited programming knowledge, this is very tricky though. -
hey guys,
while debating whether to keep the envy or not (I would have to sell it on ebay if anything), I'm regretting not getting the top end screen for it (1900x1080). I have the 1300 one. Is it possible to replace the screen aftermarket? I don't have a warranty on it anyway as I got it refurb.
Also, I searched but it returned so many results.. how do we disable the quick launch keys? I've found one post that bound calculator to mouse button 1, but that's a bit weird. Is there a way to fully disable them? -
For the replacement screen, start here:
HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts -
I found this when browsing that page :
HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts
A lot of anti glares/brightviews, but none actually show the # of pixels.
Out of curiosity, does anyone on this board do this type of stuff (paid?). I'm likely way out of my league if doing this on my own.
My alternative would be to buy a refurb envy 15 on ebay with the screen and switch my dual ssd's over. Is that easier? -
honestly if you can follow the service guide to the point it is quite easy... had to replace the keyboard for a client who owns the 15 because hp wouldn't accept his warranty..(weird i know) took about 40 mins but it was my first time opening the case....just follow the instructions
-
Any link to the guide? Searching this thread doesn't find much
-
Anyone know if you can buy an extra Envy 15 battery separately? I don't see it on HP's website.
Also, is it easy to replace the 500GB HDD with an SSD later, specifically on the Envy 15? I haven't done anything like that before.
And for what tasks would the 520m be a noticeable upgrade over the 430m? I'm mainly going to be doing heavy internet use, gaming, and multitasking but nothing too intensive with the multitasking, just a lot of things open. Some photo editing and stuff like that, but just for fun. -
nevermind, found it. Looks like it would be far easier to just swap the drives on a refurb envy. Since I already have dual SSD's, it would just be a matter of taking the assembly out of mine, and installing it into that one (and the 640GB drive in mine).
-
@MM thks.......i think i will just play and stop worring about the heat
-
I know probably few people care, but I did find the cause of this problem. Ironically it appears that the USB Microsoft Optical Comfort Mouse 3000 I use, if plugged in, will cause the computer to flake out when resuming from sleep. You'd think a microsoft mouse would work correctly with microsoft windows, but you'd be wrong. Without the mouse plugged in, the laptop resumes properly 100% of the time.
-
Finally got my Envy 15.
It has to go back because the V, Space, L CTRL keys are loose and come off if pressed on the side. *sigh* To top things off, they don't have i7 and greater than 4GB config available any more!
The thing is very nice over all, and is beautiful except for the crap keyboard. Another surprise, which shouldn't be a surprise considering it's a i7, was the size of the damn power adapter.
The laptop is nice and generally you do get what you pay for!

I will need help with my Envy, it won't turn on and no light at all, I am sure the motherboard is dead and I need to change it. I know the spare part number 597597-001 and I check prices, it look like the cheapest is 480 in dectrader.
What do u think, should I buy it there or ask HP, my problem is I am living in Spain I will need a delivery. Thanks! -
Hmm, I hate to ask this, because I swear I've seen it in this thread before, but can I simply swap out my dual ssd's into an envy that comes with a normal hard drive? I know the enclosure is slightly different so I would need to swap that out. Is there anything else I need to do, or is it plug and play at that point?
Edit : They're in Raid0 (from factory) -
You just have to get the 2.5in hdd bracket if you wish to swap it out... not sure why you would want to though... I would just unraid the drives and personally i would be set for life

If I understand correctly, you have two Envy 15's, one that came with the dual 1.8" drive caddy and one that came with the single 2.5" caddy, and you are asking whether you can swap them.
The Envy that came with single 2.5" drive would need the dual 1.8" caddy and cables and vice versa. You may be able to use the caddies that came with each laptop; however, you will probably need to tape the additional 1.8" drive cable down somewhere after you install the dual 1.8" drive caddy on the one that came with the 2.5" - seems like a lot of work, especially to back up, un-Raid, re-Raid and restore the drives, but I imagine you have a good reason to do it. -
I am from Canada. There is only 100 bucks difference between Envy 14 and Envy 15. Envy 15 upgraded comes with i7 and 8GB ram. I was looking at in Best Buy. The Envy 15 is extremely HOt. What are you guys experiencing with Envy 15 with i7 Processor. How hot does it really get. On the other hand the Envy 14 was just like room temperature.
-
Best Buy (at least in US) dropped the Envy 15 over 6 months ago. They only ever stocked the gen 1 version with the 4830 GPU and the stock models had a very old BIOS which ran very hot. I would make sure your looking at a gen 2 model (which I doubt) with the 5830 GPU and the 2 USB 3.0 ports if not I would stay away from a gen 1 version even at a discount price when you should be able to order a gen 2 for not much more direct from HP...
PS: Also a lot of best buys stock was with the low res screen (1366x768)... -
I am looking at Gen 2. It comes with ATI 5830 and all. But I still find it hot. Hmm..... Decisions
-
I don't mind unraiding the drives (even if it means I need to reinstall windows). I'm looking at a fully loaded beats edition, but it comes with the 500GB drive (I assume 2.5 inch).
My question is basically, is it pretty simple (with unraided drives), to move my SSD's into the Beats laptop, and the 500GB one into the normal envy? I assume everything comes in each laptop already?
From what I gathered, the Beats will come with the 2.5 inch caddy, while I have the 2x 1.8 caddy. So just unscrewing the caddy from both is all that's needed, or am I missing other things? -
Yes it should be that simple, the only thing I'm not 100% sure of is if you go from an i5 to an i7 MOBO, if the CPU is the same series then you should have no problems. You should even be able to boot it up from your existing drives without reinstalling anything, the only issue may be Win 7 not recognizing the serial numbers and you may need to reactivate each OS with the proper key (but you should get 30 days to do that). Also, just to be safe, I would make sure that both machines have the same BIOS version before you do the swap...
-
One last question, I swear it. I'm also debating just getting a refurb envy 15 with the specs i want. It's not a bad idea by any means, and then I just sell mine on ebay.
HOWEVER, this thread has found the service manual for the 3rd gen envy. Does anyone at all think it will be released this year, or will it be well into 2011 (like the envy 2nd gen)
edit : nevermind. Found JJB's post about the new offerings, and nothing really interesting. No backlit KB, and the 5830 GPU will still be on top. CPU power isn't what's missing in this laptop. Thoughts on this?
What adapter are people using. I noticed a few links to amazon. Are any of them curve shaped (rather than sticking out like our default ones)? -
My Envy has been hanging more frequently. Does HP have a fix for this and has anyone experienced this and have it fixed? If so, what is the fix?
These random lockups are very annoying -
Without more info we can not really help... What exactly is locking up? Any apps you are running causing it to "lock up", is the computer bsoding? We need infoz
-
Its fairly random. The screen will freeze completely, no error message, no BSOD. This hapens while just browsing, screen saver mode, typing in word. I have to do a hard power down and power up.
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
I experienced frequent hangs and black screens with the first two E15 models that I bought and returned within the 21-day period. It occurred randomly with both laptops (sometimes even when no applications were running). My understanding is that this was resolved with a BIOS update within the past few months. Did you try updating your BIOS, graphics drivers and Catalyst? -
I have the some problem.
But ..
1. happened after it goes into idle for some time.
2. you can still move the cursor.
3. control key like wifi sound is still funtional (light up)
4. if you press power key for 5 6 seconds, it might turn off by itself after a few mins....
I think my problem is about the cpu status?
Anyone knows that? -
it seems like you have an application then causing the problem... Are you on the stock hp image? or have you reinstalled cleanly

SOLUTION FOUND FOR SLOW SSD SPEEDS!
NOTE: THIS WORKS ON THE ENVY 15 AND SEVERAL OTHER PM55 AND HM55 CHIPSET NOTBOOKS AND HAS BEEN CONFIRMED ON INTEL, SAMSUNG, VORTEX AND CRUCIAL DRIVES (so far).
This is a solution to fix the slow 4K R/W speeds of the intel and other SSD's in the Envy series. It actually appears to affect all CPU's using the PM55 or HM55 chipset. The negative impact of this 'fix' is that it will cuase your CPU to idle at full speed under no load in order to override the 'C1E' power savings state which is the culprit that bottlenecks the SSD speeds.
Here are my 'normal speeds' vs. improved speeds with this tweak:
View attachment 55232 original speeds
View attachment 55233 speeds after disabling idle state
The good news is you can easily set single (or more) power plan settings to use when you want (or need) maximum SSD performance and switch back to normal by changing power plans. Bad news is while in this mode your temps will be high even at idle. My 540M idles at 65C when in this mode but still just gets lukewarm to the touch after an hour, those of you with i7's may have much higher temps.
CAUTION! This is a registry edit tweak and should be done with extreme care after backing up your registry so you can reverse it if you make an error etc. Not responsible for errors on your part.... (Just covering my a**).
1. Go to "regedit"
2 .Locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power \ PowerSettings \ 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 \ 5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad
3. Change Attributes from 1 to 0.
4. Then go to any Advanced Power Plan settings, select Processor Power Management, There will be a new option 'processor idle disable'. This will show in all 6 default power plan settings (3 for plugged in and 3 for on battery)
5. Change this to 'disable idle' on the plans you want to have full SSD performance
NOTE: Doing this will cause the CPU to idle at full speed at 0% load. It also works on the battery settings but will kill your battery life, my 540M idles at ~19W in this state vs. 5.5W in normal mode....
Some people are attempting to see if this can be adjusted to just disable idle on 1 core or ideally on just 1 thread which would reduce heat and power draw significantly, probably be a full time fix while plugged in. Will update here if any improvements are found.
PS: I really do see a big improvement, for example, in my Nikon photo viewing app. I can now scroll through a 500+ 20MB image folder at full screen full resolution without any pauses or skipping (grey out) of any images. Never been able to do this before, the whole folder takes like 65 seconds to scroll through.....Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Hi Guys,
I am new to the forum so apologies if this question has already been answered. I am looking to purchase a replacement keyboard for my Envy 15. I am living in Ireland so need a supplier that will ship to here. I contacted HP support in Ireland and they said to contact the local distributor which I did & they don't stock them. I have searched & searched the internet to no avail, can anyone help? -
-
@Pitabred
Thanks for posting the Crucial results. I added a note to the beginning of my post above adding known SSD brands that benefit from this tweak.
Any ideas of how to limit the 'disable idle' to just one core (or one thread)? If you look at the descriptions of power options near the one that gets changed you see several options mentioning core states and core 'parking' etc. I'm just leary of trial and error testing of CPU adjustments. It appears the benefits of speed increases still occur with as little as 1 thread being locked at full speed. You can test this by running Super Pi which uses a single thread while running CDM. It's not quite as much of a boost, but temps would run much cooler with only 1 core or thread idling at max speed.... -
It is a clean install with latest BIOS F.2A and Catalyst Drivers. I would use it for an hour or two and it would hang.
-
@JJB
Tried your fix for the SSDs. My i7 820qm idles at ~80C in a 70C environment. While the fix is a great find, unfortunately it's not entirely practical (at least permanently) for i7 users I think. -
I got nothing for right now. I don't really have time to dig deeply into it with work and all at the moment.
-
Well looks like HP is a step closer to releasing the Gen 3 version. Below is a link to a new Envy marketing net page for the envy line, the 15 mentions the 5730 as an option but other than that no new details or specs. It does show the same original Gen 1 pictures with an E2E screen and bumpers on the palmrest but makes no mention of E2E, so I think the marketing idiots just used the old pics without knowing they were incorrect, just like the Gen 1 pics.... Note: the links for specs goes to the original Gen 2 .PDF which is obviously not the correct data sheet...
High Performance Laptops w/ Free Audio Software | HP Envy Features
Also look at the Envy 14 Beats edition, pretty cool looking with the Red backlit keyboard. Also shows the upcoming Envy 17 3D display version... -
If they're gonna do a 3D display, they better stuff a 5870 in the machine instead of the 5850. 3D cuts your framerates in half.
-
@pitabred
Hey, just curious what your idle temps were after trying the 'diasable idle' tweak?
Mine hit a max of 67C when the room temp warmed up yesterday to about 72F.... -
My idle temps hover a bit over 70C, with the fan constantly on. I'm not sure if my heatsink is properly attached to the CPU though. I know it wasn't on the GPU when I first got this machine. I got over a 10C max temperature drop by replacing the pad with proper paste on the GPU.
-
I have tried out some of the 3d products that nvidia and others have been putting out to the market..to me, I can NOT stand them... if I look at them for more then 30 seconds my eyes start to hurt and then shortly after i will get a painful headache.... as with some of the 3rd gen info coming out...I do not see what the huge deal is for some of the people waiting...it looks almost exactly the same aside from maybe adding bumpers on the sides of the edges
-
Tried the ssd fix and my speeds pretty much improved across the board. However, my non-raid g2's are still significantly slower than JJB's results. Not sure if it's the drives or perhaps my windows config/running processes. Happy with the change though.
CPU temps have between 58-62C.

hmm don't have that
oh wait, i am on my thinkpad...hahaha -
