So you play with V-sync on, and everything else completely maxed out except 2x AA at 1920x1080? Have you overclocked your 5830 to do this?

nope... everything is at stock no oc, My battery profile is set to high performance, and I play it on a external 24in 1920x1080 monitor and it gets at least 50fps

I just checked with fraps and I'm getting 15-20 fps during any action at all, and I'm just using default settings.

Edit: With battery profile on high performance, and using Envy 15's screen at 1920x1080.
Edit2: I switched the resolution to 1280x720, and I got the same FPS. What's up?

I'm not sure. That is odd. You should probably try and downloaded the newest graphic card drivers and reinstalling them.

Yeah, first it happened on the old drivers, so I updated to the new drivers and it still happened. I didn't uninstall the old drivers, though. I ran 3DMark06 and got 7929. What do people usually get with the 5830 at standard clocks?

Silly question, but are you plugged in and using a 90/120w adapter?
It sounds like the cpu maybe throttling hence your fps not changing with res.

On battery the cpu is locked at 1200mhz on i5 and that does hurt cpu intense games (valve games and bfbc2 to name a couple)

Yeah, when I got the same FPS at lower res I thought that it might be the cpu, too. I'm plugged in using the 120w adapter that came with it. I checked CPU-Z after playing and it said 2.793 GHz. Would it throttle while playing for some reason (i would think it would be the opposite)? I can check that later, I don't have time right now, though.

Does the 5830 underclock itself when not doing anything intensive? AMD GPU Clock Tool says it's at 100/200 when I start it up without a game running. The "graphics" tab of CPU-Z says it's at 100/200 as well, and so does the "sensors" tab of GPU-Z, although the main page says 500/800. It goes up to "500/800" when gaming, though, and I used AMD GPU Clock Tool to set it to 550/900, and I still got low FPS.

Thanks for helping me with this, guys.

Edit: I have the i5-520m. Forgot to say that.

Try going to the CCC panel and click the options tab (upper left) > preferences > restore factory defaults... Then reboot and double check that your in the high performance power plan and the advance settings for ATI power play is set to max performance when plugged in.

If that doesn't help I would consider completely uninstalling the ATI drivers and run driver sweeper then reintstalling the newest drivers from ATI from the VGA (MS) driver. Note this means unistalling ALL ATI programs including CCC etc. and install the full driver package with CCC from ATI. Each new version of the drivers has it's own matching CCC version. ATI's release notes even recommend uninstalling previous versions before updating.

    Hope that helps....

Well I just got my envy 15 and I think I may have gotten the wrong screen :( I ordered the glossy screen, and i think mine is the matte. Is the glossy screen is supposed to have edge to edge glass? Cuz mine doesn't :(

Whoa. I just used the webcam, and everything is extremely tinted with a white-ish purple-ish color. How can I change this?

@eight35pm Windows 7 looks different on mine as well. Have you figured out how to change it to what the dv6tse looked like?
EDIT: Nvm. I changed it. I opened StarDock MyColors and changed the theme to windows 7 aero, instead of the default envy theme.

EDIT2: Well I just installed JJB's %100 brightness profile and it looks good, but everything seems a bit brown.
EDIT3: Hmmm. I just tried the other one (the one that has 7500k in the name) and it looks better IMO

the purplish color is the lowlight feature for you can be seen better in almost no light conditions...if you turn it off in the webcam settings it gets better

alright so i have tried plugging my envy 15 into my 720p+ TV via HDMI and when I do, no matter the screen resolution the icons and close, minamize, maximize buttons are really big. is there anyway to solve this? i would much rather use my gaming keyboard but i need to be able to use the tv for this. any suggestions?

You think it's the graphics card despite the fact that I get the same FPS at low settings? By the way, before I said at lower res, but it was also at lowest settings. I don't know if that makes a difference (since a lower res should increase the fps anyways), and I don't know why I forgot to mention the lower settings.

Edit: What do you mean "reinstalling the newest drivers from ATI from the VGA (MS) driver"?

I did everything in the first paragraph, and it didn't help. I'll try the second paragraph when I have time.

I had this happen with Prototype, problem was driver, I don't remember if it was audio or graphics, but basically I got 5fps no matter the settings (my desktop is PLENTY powerful enough to play Prototype)...

It would seem that if you did lowest settings and your fps didn't change, it would be a software issue of some sort...

It can't be the GPU itself if your getting ~8000 in 3Dmark06 because thats about right at default settings.

I meant that you need to uninstall ALL ATI/AMD software until your running on the default Microsoft VGA graphics driver and then run driver sweeper, you'll be amazed at how much it finds that remained behind after uninstall.

A couple of tips; first make sure you do not have the auto driver update in win 7 turned on or it will just reinstall what you have. Turn off wifi before you reboot so it won't search and install the original driver from HP. Delete the AMD, ATI and ATI Tech folders on C: drive (except clock tool) also in program files and program files (x86). Also download the new driver and save to your desktop before you begin, it's easier to find and run it when at VGA resolution (which you can increase by right clicking the desktop) . You may also need to download the other ATI features seperately (Hydravision, video converter, HDMI etc) and install after you do the driver / CCC combo install, this seems to vary with each new release from AMD but if those are not included in the main download then they always have a link to the 'extras' below the primary driver package...

Ah, hopefully mine is the same issue and after I reinstall the drivers it will be fixed.

After restarting like five times it hasn't done it again. No idea why.

Great, thank you very much. I'll do this.

Ordered my E15 (finally), and I picked the 250 GB 5400RPM HD + 160GB SSD drive option. I've been reading that the HD that HP uses is garbage and causes a lot of heat. For those who have it, is the problem the same with the 250 GB 5400RPM drive?

I had an Envy 17 for like 2 days, I may actually buy one again soon, thinking of selling my Envy Beats. But i did sink a lot of money in it for upgrades...

By the way, saw an Envy 15 with an i7-920MX CPU listed on Amazon. Is that even possible? higher wattage than the i7-7s or 8s, probably runs hotter too. Can you overclock on an Envy 15? Anybody know?

Actually that is incorrect, several people have been OCing the i5 and i3 CPU's in the envy 14 owners thread, as well as the Asus threads. There is a program called 'set FSB' or something close to that, unfortunatley I deleted the link when I couldn't figure out which clock generator worked with my 540M (hundred+ choices). IIRC some people with i5 450M's were running upward of 3Ghz base speeds fully stable....

EDIT: Here is the setFSB link: http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/ One of the clock generators works for the envy 14's but I forget which one. I think you can contact the author for help with support for specific MOBO's

Try right clicking the desktop > screen resolution > make text and other items larger or smaller.... Defualt is 125% so try the 100% setting if that's still to big you'll see a 'set custom DPI text size' option in the left column, don't know if that changes the icons or not...

You can also change the size of your desktop icons by right clicking > view > small icons. Same thing with the Taskbar icons Right click taskbar > properties > check the 'use small icons box' ....

You can also 'auto hide the taskbar to gain some more screen space on a lower res external display...

I tried this an it didn't work. I'm not sure if it's because it didn't work, or if it's because I didn't do something right. I'm pretty sure it's the latter, though. I hate to ask you to do all this work, but could you tell me what to do, step by step?

One reason I think I messed up is that my display doesn't appear under the "color management" window anymore. For some reason as i was doing stuff, it reverted to the default color profile instead of the 100% brightness one. I just checked color management to switch it back, but my display isn't listed as one of the devices. I'm kinda freaking out now.

Edit: I just tried to reinstall the display driver, but it says no driver found. I then turned back on the driver auto-update thing so it would go back to the original driver, but it still says no driver found.

You do have a gen 2 with the 5830 ? (I hope so since updating the 4830 gen 1 driver is a problem)

Have you rebooted after your install??

Did you Uninstall the driver first before you ran driver sweeper?

Does anything show up in device manager? Device manager > Display adapters > ATI Mobility Radeon.... If you see that then double click it and select the 'driver' tab and look at what driver version you have.

If you don't see 'Display adapters' (just a VGA listing) in the device manager list then it is not installed. You can also check and see if the CCC option appears when you right click the desktop.

Also where did you download the driver from? It's possible that you tried to install the desktop version. Here is the link to the newest Mobility driver from ATI: ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

If you need to reinstall it you should probably run driver sweeper again before trying it and delete the folders like I posted earlier. Then downoad the first option and install it with the automatic default options etc. and then reboot and look at device manger to confirm it's listed (it should say Version 8.762) and make sure you have the CCC panel available. Then you can go back to the link above and (optionally) install the last to items, Hydravison and Avivo if you want those features...

You probably couldn't get it working because the listed chipsets on that page only include the HM55 as far as the current generation. Nothing for the PM55 which is what we'd need. I'm thinking the Envy 15 CPU is still not overclockable.

With regards to the problem that arose, in device manager it did show the display adapter-> ATI Mobility Radeon, but for some reason it wasn't actually there. I don't quite understand what happened. It showed it under device manager but my computer was just like when I had unistalled it and it didn't appear under device manager. Anyways, I then uninstalled it, and I tried to install the drivers directly from ATI, and I was using the same page you posted, but it said there was no driver to reference or something. I redownloaded from HP instead, which worked this time. It says it's version 8.712.

I just did that, so I haven't checked my fps again yet. I'm going to do that now, and if it is still bad, I'll try to do what you said again. I'm pretty sure I did exactly that the first time around, though. It was when it didn't work and I retried some stuff it got messed up.

So if it once again doesn't work, is there anything else that could be causing the problem?

And thank you very, very much for all the help.

    Edit: Uggh, still 10-15 fps.
Edit2: Yeah, I have a 2nd gen Envy 15 with the 5830. I just got it a few days ago.

OK, so I uninstalled the driver, ran driver sweeper, rebooted. It tried to update my driver even though I turned the auto driver update off, but it said it couldn't find the VGA driver. I then downloaded the first one from the link. I ran it and pressed install, and it said,
"ATI Catalyst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer.

Your computer does not contain a proper graphics adapter."

And then the only options are "Finish" and "Cancel," so it does nothing.

The first link should automatically detect that you have a compatible GPU before it allows the download. I guess maybe try running it when you have the HP version installed and working.... It should work after uninstalling the old one but now that I think about it their may have been issues with getting the first driver update to take from the HP shipped version, I can't remember back that far, it was like 6 updates ago....

Also you never confirmed that you do have the 5830? If it's a gen 1 4830 then thats the problem..

Sorry, I edited into one of my above posts that I have the 5830.

So now I have version 8.762 after leaving the HP drivers there and installing the ATI ones over them. What's weird is I tried this before I posted about my problem, and the ATI download ran and installed something, but it never updated to 8.762.

Anyways, I'm still getting 10-15 fps on TF2 even with the new drivers...

    Edit: I did reboot.

Did you install the drivers from this thread?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-drivers-software-forum/426181-drivers-hp-envy-15-intel.html

When I got my Envy, I did a clean windows 7 install. I installed the mobility drivers from ATI website and I was getting kind of very low FPS. As soon as I installed those drivers (the ones from the thread above) I got really good FPS at almost every game (running in 1920x1080 too) I don't know if someone already directed you to that thread or gave you the direct link to the drivers, so sorry if you already did try those.

Those were actually the first I tried, but thanks for the help anyways. I'm really looking for any suggestions right now, any possible solution. Maybe I should try those again?

I haven't done a clean install, by the way. I did a minimized image recovery. I was thinking about doing a clean install, but I didn't have the time. Maybe I should just do one now since I'm having problems.

Does anyone know if you can still purchase extra batteries from HP and how much they cost for the envy 15? I see that the 9 cell splice battery is listed at $68 but is sold out. There's no link for the 6 cell, either.

I don't have my Envy in front of me, but when you run the installer it should extract your files to c:\ATI\something I believe. Can you right-click on the VGA device, and load the drivers directly from the disk?

    Hi All,

I haven't posted on here in a while.

I have a few questions for everyone:

    - Has anyone tried the HP slim charger on the Envy 15? It states it works, but what is everyone on here using? After 9 months the brick is weighing me down.

    - Also, I have 6g 1066 Ram in my i7, Where can I get the extra gig for to make it all powerful 8G? ;)

I still have some heating issues, but it is few and far between. The screen and size of the laptop is great (thanks JJB for the color profiles).

It is now my primary laptop for school -- I bought the Booq Mamba Shift backpack....fits it perfectly.....It could have a little more padding, but I am amazed with how much the bag can hold.

    - BTW, the apple Magic Mouse does NOT connect great with my laptop. Not sure if it is because it is Windows or because of the Bluetooth Stack....it keeps disconnected and takes a while to initially connect. But still looks great since I had it matched to the Beats case :)

Did anyone notice that the Envy 13 and 15 are not on the HP Website today? Maybe there is the 3rd Generation Envy coming out?!?!

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that the Envy 15 and 13 are no longer up on HP's site. Sorry if it was mentioned before.

    Are they now officially discontinued?

the ATI drivers are weird... I had to install it twice for it to work, because the first time it BSODed.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. What would this do differently?

Edit: I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, and now nothing I do installs the drivers. If I get them from ATI, it doesn't run (it says that message about no display adapter). So I downloaded them from HP and it installed CCC but not the display drivers. And I can't run CCC.

    Hi all!

My Envy is running amasingly slow, I really don't know what to do anymore!
I'm talking Adobe Cs3 software, Adobe Illustrator specificaly. My five years old pavillion ZD8000 is working better!
First unit was returend due to keyboard problem, and the second had blanc screen issue, but I've solved it with new bios update.
Now I can live with crappy camera, touchpad, sound problems, lousy USB ports, heat, but now keyboard freezes ocasionaly wich leaves me no option other than rebooth, and slow downs in Adobe illustrator is problem from the begginig and it's getting worse. I've tried to play with power options, didnt help, no matter what I do, it's slow.

    core i7 720
    8 gigs of ram
    ssd+hdd
    8530 gpu

    I'll appreciate any comment

Hmm, I've used Illustrator CS3, CS4 and CS5 versions on my laptop and they have all been incredibly fast, even when working with very large (2GB+) poster-sized files.

Is it possible there is something else running in the background that is slowing down your computer? Did you do a clean install of windows? Did you remove Norton Antivirus? You might try checking the box for "best performance" options in System Properties -> Advanced System Settings -> Performance. This will turn off Aero and other kinds of graphical things but speed up your application load times as well as shutdown and boot times. Also, you may want to review your power settings to make sure they are set up for maximum performance when running Illustrator.

Have you run Crystaldiskmark on your SSD? maybe you need to update to the latest intel SSD driver so that TRIM is enabled.

So I just did a system restore and got back to where I was before, having 8.712 installed and then installing 8.762 from ATI. Like I said, I'm still getting horrible FPS.

Is the 5830 supposed to underclock itself to 100/200 when not doing anything intensive? Mine does this.
