My 320GB originally got warm with the fans off. With the fans always on, it barely gets warm now.

Do you know what temp your drive reads at? mines at 46 C 114F...

That seems hot doesnt it? Or is that normal? It's uncomfortable to use at this point. Wondering if I should just send it back..

Helps to some matter, but just turn off the low-light compensation. And then adjust the colors yourself till you have a more realistic tone.

That's what I'm expecting. Are the dual hard-drive setups in some sort of bracket that could be preassembled before putting it in a notebook? Either way, I think it makes sense that they'd go through old inventory this way (assuming we don't see G1s in the dual setup).

I can't believe they're now offering a 640GB 5400RPM option. You pay $50 more than the 500GB for an additional 140GB but a much slower drive.

Well, in fact, some 5400RPM drives can be as fast as 7200RPM ones...I dont quite understand it, but higher density drives are normally faster.

    For example, I remember reading a 500GB 5400RPM being as fast as a 320GB 7200RPM...

A quick question as I'm somewhat new to having ATi graphics...

Is the Catalyst drivers found on ATi's site for the HD 5800 cards both for desktop cards and laptop gpu's?

Drivers have to be modified to work with mobility chips. There is an app but it doesn't currently work on newer drivers. The author is working on it tho. You can get some from www.strags.com . He just posted a new 8.70 one on the 2/11 but I havent tried them yet.

Okay, I feel dumb, but I just went to configure at 15" envy and no matter what I do, it seems like the store just wants me to have 4GB of ram, no more. The thing complains that the video card requires 2 DIMMS or less.

    What is going on?

I mentioned earlier that Strags.com had posted some newer 8.70's but I'm honestly not sure if they will work or not. I did a search for PCI/VEN_1002&DEV_68A1 and it was only showing up in older builds. Can someone confirm if the 8.70's strags has up will work with our cards or point me to a set that have been fixed to work
    Thanks

That is the device ID for the 5830. So they should work.

Also, you can easily mod any ATI driver to work with the 5830. See my previous post below:

Ah okay. I went and read your post and it seems pretty easy just a couple questions. When I go to device manager and pull up details for the 5830 I get the following info:
    Under Hardware Ids
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1&SUBSYS_1522103C&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1&SUBSYS_1522103C
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1&CC_0300

    and under Compatible ids
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1
    PCI\VEN_1002&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_1002&CC_0300
    PCI\VEN_1002
    PCI\CC_030000

Which is the line I want to add? Your post mentions adding "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series" = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A14" and none of my numbers are an exact match. Also should I just stick with the CCC that hp installed or is there any benefit to installing the CCC from the 10.1 download?

Sorry for dumb questions but if I don't ask I won't learn :)

Here are the 1333's I am using: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=D3-13S4GS

They are the actual Samsung made parts and have been working great for me. According to CPU-Z they also match the timing of the 1066's @7-7-7-20 so no latency issues and they're $15 cheaper (less when coupons available).

It doesn't matter which one as long as it matches one.

The one I made does match but I believe you have a typo in your copy/paste. My post uses "PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1" vs 68A14 which is an incorrect device id.

A list of IDs can be found here:
    http://developer.amd.com/drivers/pc_vendor_id/pages/default.aspx

I installed the CCC from 10.1 but I saw no difference.

NP, my bad. I just highlighted the entire message and pasted it into a notepad file so could read offline. I see now that wordwrap screwed up some of spacing and some txt from the next line got tacked on, sorry.

Since I also have an ATI card in my main x64 desktop I went ahead and looked in the ATI folder on that system and my directory structure and inf numbers are diffrent than the ones you mention. Mine are:

    Path : C:\ATI\Support\10-1_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display

and the infs are all numbered either C7_94296 or CH_94296. Would I just want to edit the one that starts with C7?

Sent my laptop to HP on 2/3 and according to their website I won't have it back until 3/3. Simply for them to replace a fan.

I'm trying to get a hold of an executive case manager right now, as no one at HP seems willing to help me or get me in touch with something who can figure out what the hell is going on.

I was also lied to, when I initially called I was told I couldn't exchange the computer and have a new one sent out. I was told a few days ago this would have been possible and would have been the best option.

Anybody know who I should get in contact with and how? I've tried HP Executive Customer Service and they said they could only send me to my case manager or give me a new one. This is really unacceptable.

I'm 99% sure I'm going to return this machine when I do get it and wait for the MBP refresh.

Thats what I ran into when I needed to send my 1st Envy back. I could send it in and they would fix it and have it back to me in about a month or I could set it up as a return and just order a new one. I choose the later option. They did credit me back as soon as Fedex had the package I shipped back showing in their system.

I don't know if it will help or not but when I had all my problems over the Beat etc. I hand someone from a different part of HP call me and they tried to help work out my problems. You can try this number and see but no promises. 1-866-545-4683

Should I keep the Envy with the G1 SSD or send it back for a regular hard drive? I only paid 17XX bones for this, still a good deal no matter what. Just leaves that bad taste in your mouth you know? =X

Fan Always On: a little noisy(acceptable), but the whole computer stays VERY cool.
'Fan Always On' Off: very quite, but the surface turns out to be hot to touch, especially the left side.

Well, it kind of depends. Is the system going to be cheaper if you buy a new one has a regular drive than the one your sending back? I it isn't & you send it back then get rdy for a 2 hr or longer phone call to try and get a new one ordered that matches the price. They can do it but its a struggle.

    2. I didn't know about the exchange until they were repairing it. As I said I was lied to.
    3. Exchange now? And deal with this customer support? Forget it, I don't wanna risk having to deal with HP every again.

Thanks, that helped. Now I am itching to buy one. EPP gets me 7% discount or wait for the next $300 coupon if it ever comes....

Sad they dont offer 4GB bar x 2 on the Envy i5 as an option. It is such a waste to get 4GB from it and end up buying 2x4GB to replace it.

I assume it is easy to replace?

That's how the cookie crumbles, you get what they offer you... one of the two sticks of RAM is easy to replace, the second one requires a lot of screws to be removed before it can be reached since it's under the keyboard.

If you don't need a laptop now, I'd wait a bit. Maybe the newer ASUS computers with switcheable graphics will convince HP to release an Envy 15 V3 with that feature within a few months. HP has the feature in the Envy 13 already, so it's not a lack of expertise... just a lack of motivation that's preventing the Envy 15 from having such a feature.

I fixed the same problem on mine when I installed the 4GB internal memory. The problem is how they torqed the screws from below to the keyboard 'panel'. It should be very easy to fix by just removing three screws as follows:

First remove the rubber foot in the right front corner (tarckpad side). I used a dull butter knife to pry up one corner of the pad, it is reusable so just be careful handling it when it's removed, the adhesive stays on the rubber so don't let it get ditry.

Now all you have to do is loosen the screw where the rubber was, and the ones to either side of it, under right corner of touchpad and under USB connectors.

The key is retightening the screws while squeezing the keyboard very firmly together with the base right where the screw your torqing is. Start with touch pad screw, then the corner, then the USB. Just make sure each screw is fully loosend then squeeze together very firmly until your finished tightening the screws (also very firmly).

EDIT: make sure all 3 screws are looseend before you start the tightening in sequence.

Should do the trick and alot easier than trying for a return (and quicker) :D

I wonder if it has something to do with shortage of the Intel i5 chipset. Sony and Dell both experience similar issues.

Just got my Envy 15 today and the computer rocks back and forth when typing on a level surface. It's as if the rubber feet are not level or the system itself is a bit twisted. :-(

Other than that, I notice that the screen keeps changing brightness. I turned of the adaptive brightness setting, but still keeps going darker than lighter. Any advice?

Otherwise, I uninstalled that horrible HP windows theme, and now think it looks all nice and pretty again. Still getting used to it, but so far seems really nice (other than the issues above).

I don't think any of the US retail store / online store has the 2nd Gen Envy yet. Only from HP are you able to get 2nd Gen Envy.

Amazon, Bestbuy, etc all have the original 1st Gen.

As for ALS (Active Lighting System), I had that on the Asus. Annoying as hell.

    ***EDIT***

Check to make sure all of the rubber feet are fully in the 'recess' molded in the base. There is a very slight recess that is almost the exact size of the rubber pads and if it is even silightly off it will cause the rocking you described. You can carefully pry off the rubber and realign if needed.
