Can't remeber who, but someone researched this (and posted links) and basically found that the firmware upgrade really won't get you any real world performance difference as long as you have a G2 and trim working.

I believe the info was from Anandtech, I bookmarked it and when I get home I'll try to find the link(s) and post them.

Aré you talking about SSDs that come with the envy? You can't actually upgrade the firmware. They are not recognized by intel flasher regardless of where you put them. HP wires their own "ids" in the drives causing this.

you can upgrade the firmware on the g2 ssd. just not using the envy. my current firmware already supports trim, but i like having the most current updates.

    Hi,

Im a happy new owner of Envy 15

Here are the specs of my model

    http://www.elcorteingles.es/informatica/producto/producto.asp?referencia=15215535913

Ok, I´m burning now the recovery disks, but I´m used to work with XP as I need it in my job.

Can I format the PC after getting these recovery disks and use them only if I need it for warantee purposes?

And then, install XP as usual? I think it also comes with a stupid HP Magic Desktop or something so that I don´t want to have on my laptop.

Or maybe it´s better to keep Win7 as it´s better to get the 100% of the hardware? All the software I use is about graphic design and web development, are there any issues to use it on Win7?

    Thnks a lot, regards!!

You can't install xp because no driver for it. Your best bet will be use xp mode.

Ack, having 2 issues today. My partner wanted their own user account so I set a second user up, initially as a standard user. Now folders & shares that were made when the laptop only had one account as admin set up are giving him snit fits when he's logged in on his account saying he isn't authorized to use the folder and did he want to save a document to his user document folder. I thought okay and switched his account to admin and still it was giving this message. I also noticed that even tho he's now set as admin when he was logged in and I tried to copy something from my desktop to his laptop folder I got the same message. Any idea's what the problem is?

Also since the other day when I set him a seperate account now when I go into either his or my account and bring up synaptic control center the darn curly scroll option no longer shows up as an option. When I log into mine it will still do it but I see no option to turn it on or off. If I log into his account, even now that he's set as admin the onefinger scroll options doesnt offer the choice and he's stuck with the regular one finger scroll up down/ side to side options only.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Seems like my only option is to restore the system to factory default and start fresh, please help.
    WAAAH

You can add his name to these files in security tab. Or just add everyone.

@yejun-assuming your post wast to me:
Actually when I initially set up the shares I set them all to everyone but did this before there was a second user account. Do I need to redo that since there is a new account? I thought changing him to an admin would solve the issue but no joy so far. Also how do I fix the fact that saving to certain folders in the root of the main drive are giving this mssg.

You shouldn't have to restore system, you should be able to just remove the new user account and try again to add a second account with different settings.

On my first envy I set up 2 accounts, admin and myself, I didn't like it so I removed both accounts and created a single new one with admin control. All the files / folders / data stayed intact but moved to the common locations as if there were no 'users'.

Well, the discussion arose because we were debating the build quality of the Envy vs. MBP, and as someone who finds both build quality and value to be very important, I brought the price : performance ratio into play. I should have made it clear that I was comparing my build (520, 1080p, 5830, 7200rpm HDD) to what I believe I can get, at the price I think I can get it, when the MBP is refreshed.

Do you doubt that the refresh will match the specs of my signature below? I'm not running top of the line Envy here.

    come onn USPS...so impatient..

anyway, while reading a review about the mini 210, I wondered how exactly frustrating the trackpad can be.

see, I'm used to keeping my index on the left button while using the middle finger to move the cursor around. does that make the cursor bounce around?
I heard there can be a lot of unwanted zooming. does turning off some multitouch gestures fix the annoying behavior (I really can't see myself using pinch too often anyway)?

Any idea why the curly, sorry cant recall the proper name, scroll option has disappeared as of today or how to get it to show up again? I did notice that just in the last day or so Win7 downloaded some updates to both my desktop and laptop and wonder if one of those is what did it.

No idea, I'm using the original 'synaptics clickpad' software (V 7.4) that came with the Envy and have never seen the 'curly' option a lot of you keep talking about. Did you download that other 'scrybe' software?

All I know is my touchpad has worked perfectly for me after minor initial tweaking of the settings, 2 finger scroll, edge motion, momemtum and 3 finger swipe.

The video is a rendering of the original envy 15 preproduction model. They had all sorts of ads and data sheets out with real photos of what you see in that video. A lot of people were very disappointed when they recieved their pre-order envy's with no E2E. The story from a lead tech support person I talked with was that management had a firm goal of getting the envy under 5 lbs in production, the glass was the easiest thing to get rid of and saved ~4 oz.

So to answer you, no not a future release, but an original release that didn't make it.

I have taken the plunge and ordered Envy i5-540, 4gb, 160GB SSD + 250GB HD, 1920x1080 matte. It says ship date as March 8th. How reliable is that?

    Thanks.

    Congrats !

They seem to be pretty accurate as far as build dates, you will get an email comfirming when it ships from China with fedex tracking number. If it's late shipping you can call and complain and usally get some sort of credit back.

The flat reflection across the whole screen when looking at the last scene of the laptop is what makes it look like it's E2E.

You have to look at the reflections on the screen right where it goes over the inside edge of what appears to be the bezel (which is under the glass), the reflection doesn't 'jump' as it does with the screen your looking at when it passes over the inside edge of bezel. Another way to tell is look at the lack of rubber bumpers around the screen, they are on the edges of the palm rest.

    HP has pictures of this original preproduction model all over the website. Here is a link to the original gen 1 .PDF showing E2E;

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/pdf/vm247ua.pdf

    And here is the same older E2E picture used on the brand new Gen 2 datasheet;

    http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/envy/pdf/envy15_datasheet.pdf?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

It's obvious the advertising / marketing team is not aware of the subtle differrences, they probably have a pool of Envy images they use and no one has updated and removed the old pics.

It's definitely a matter of preference.

If it doesn't add to the ergonomics, performance, ruggedness or lightness of the computer, I would rather it not be on it, looks are the last thing on my list of wants.

Other people rank looks much higher on their preference list.

I for one am glad that the Matte screen option was added...

But maybe the Envy designers should take note and add an E2E option for those that want it. (Just don't take away my favorite matte option ;) )

strangely enough i walked into a local best buy and saw an envy gen1 with e2e on display o_O
loved it.. was sad to hear gen2 does not have it
or maybe i dont understand what e2e is. .but it was just flat glass over the whole laptop screen thingy, including the sides (bezel?)
edit:i'm sure it was envy15 too since i just ignored the envy13 there lol
maybe i'm just going crazy though? i will double check on monday..

I just got one of this laptops, a 2nd gen i7 version. Unfortunatelly I did not have the posibility to configure it here in Spain so I ended with a glossy display and a hard drive in state of a solid drive.

If someone for HP is reading this, please update the drivers on your web, it makes absolutely no sense not to provide the drivers since 0day for what in theory is a "premium" product. Righr now I'm missing the monitor driver, the usb3 driver and I don't know what more else.

I am not talking about keeping it weekly updated, I'm just talking about being able to install windows, run windows update, download some drivers from your web manually and then not seeing any unidentified stuff in the device manager.

Besides that the overall experience with the laptop is ok, I wanted a desktop replacement to be able to build +70K lines of c++ on the road with d3d11 support and the machine runs quiet and at a decent temperature. I would perharps add physical buttons to that touchpad and allow >90º of inclination to the screen btw...

Thats it folks, I hope the right person gets the message,

    thanks.

    Isaac.

You can play modern game with medium to high setting at full screen. It's very smooth if you use reasonable settings. Personally I still prefer nvidia card though.

There is a benchmarks thread for the envy 15 which should give you some idea of performance levels; http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=453084

I'm not a gamer but I would say that the 5830 performance is about 10-15% better overall than the 4830 and it seems to be much more stable for O.Cing. Considering it has a 24W TDP it's quite impressive IMO.

How does the 5830 compare to single 8800m GTX?
    What about 3870x2? 4870? 4870x2? 260m GTX?

just trying to get an idea on how well it will run games as im also thinking about the m17 or m17x and while the Envy looks nice, is small gaming is important to me as well and i dont want to have to upgrade again in 6-9months because the card(s) i get are just not cutting it. Im guessing the 260m GTX should be okay for another solid year of gaming right?
