hooray! my order made it to tenn. from kazakhstan!

read the benchmark topic. it can handle those two particular games, and most others, at maximum and then some, but the underside does become rather hot under heavy load, otherwise it's barely warm.
but then again, NO laptop should ever be gamed with directly on your lap unless you don't care about fertility
so you'll at least need to put a thin hardcover book under it if that's what you're planning to do.

How's the leather casing that comes with the envy? Do I need to buy a notebook bag/sleeve for the envy?
-
I would suggest getting a real sleeve for it. It comes with a cloth case that will keep it clean but not really protect it all that much.
-
Will it fit in a 15" macbook pro sleeve?
-
It should fit in any sleeve designed for a 15.6" (not 15.4") 16:9 laptop. Not a Mac guy so couldn't tell you about that specifically.
-
The 16" HP Onyx notebook sleeve fits perfectly with the slice attached and fairly snug without the slice, it's well made, looks good (no ugly pavillion graphics) and is ~$25 if they still have the 20% discount going.

I believe Lepton has shared some interesting information here. Maybe a few of the HP fanboys can't handle the truth or some constructive criticism. I think you calling him a "Troll" is way out of line. Do you see him constantly spamming this thread with crap, umm no.
I think you should just relax and not complain about someone just because they pointed out a few things.

I have a question on Envy's warranty, AFAIK standard one is a '1year global warranty' right ?
thing is my Envy 15 is purchased by my uncle, from the online HP shopping website for me (since I'm living out of USA).
So is there any way to get the warranty to my name? Is it an online registration process for the warranty ?
will there be any problem of claiming warranty if its already registered to his name (since he paid for it)?
Thanks. -
I would just try to register the computer online with the 'support assistance' program that started the first time you fired up the machine and use your info. If it rejects it for some reason just call HP and explain the computer was a gift, don't see how they can deny coverage for that, it must be a common occurance.
-
thanx for the input.
Btw this 'support assistance' program, its not a 'one time only thing' right?
Cos I might not able to connect to internet at the first time. Hope I can get it running later. -
Thanks for the advice. Is it normal for HP to charge my CC before the laptop ships?
-
Yes, they've always charged my card immediately. It could just be a temp to make sure the card is valid, but it's never been a concern of mine since it's never taken a month for a build to get shipped to me. Always around 2-3 weeks, in which time, I can contact HP to get my money refunded if there's a problem with the laptop.
-
No it won't. The Envy is much wider than the MBP.
-
Absolutely. You're asking them to build you a laptop ... not inconsiderable time and expense on their part. They need to know the funds are there and if they just authorized the charge but didn't actually charge it until it shipped, they're potentially left holding a laptop that nobody wants in case it's declined at that point (or if you were sneaky and changed your CC details between ordering and shipment).
The flip side of this is that, if you get a refund, they give you your money back pretty much as soon as FedEx picks up the package - in my case I had the refund for my first Envy before it had even arrived back at HP (maybe they just check the weight?). -
Hey guys, do you know where to buy the 'HP HDMI to VGA adapter' for Envy ?
this one: http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/pr...mpid=in_r329_personalization/browse1/home_PDP
Hp online shopping site is always out of stock of this part. Is there any other place to get it? (Think its a specific design to Envy and other HP compatible notebooks)
Btw description says its compatible with Envy 13, nothing about 15. But i suppose it should be compatible with 15 ? -
hmm, what do you guys think the chance of a keyboard protector skin made specifically for the envy showing up is?
on a different topic, I just read the pdf describing the materials the envy is made of and lo, it says the inner surface of the battery compartment has a layer of mylar, which is a thermal insulant. I guess this explains how the battery stays rather cool even during heavy gaming...nice touch indeed, it should reduce heat-induced wear

I was about to post "hooray! Laptop now being shipped", but ... what does:
mean, I wonder?Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Actually here in Quebec we have a french-speaking scientific tv program host doing the voice part for most of the translated BBC programs ( They did Life and Planet Earth in french on the CBC) and I don't know if its me being used to his voice or him being so good at this kind of work but I prefer him to Attenborough (who I think nowaddays just sounds a bit looney). hehe
EDIT you can catch an episode of Life in french here -
@ erple2
call fedex and ask. -
Just that it was shipped after the cutoff for the day.
-
More specifically - a shipping 'exception' is any sort of note on the tracking information that isn't part of the predicted 'went here, left here, delivered here.' It sounds dramatic but in this case it isn't - it causes an exception in their system because it shows up as 'shipped' on a certain date but the scheduled delivery date is pushed back; if you paid for 2-day service and it shipped on Wednesday the 7th, you'd expect it on Friday the 9th, but because it was dropped off after the cutoff on the 7th, delivery would be pushed back to Saturday the 10th, and that causes the exception.
-
Slightly offtopic, do you live on the east or west coast or somewhere in between?
-
I did a search on this messageboard but didn't come up with much.
Can anyone recommend color settings to make the display show colors as lifelike as possible please? The default settings look a little washed out to me.
Thanks. -
Smilepak's great page on the Envy has links to the ICC profiles for both types of screens:
http://mobiletech.knguyentu.com/2010/03/hp-envy-15-2nd-generation.html -
HERE: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5990480&postcount=2644
It may be my same .icc profile that smilepak has the link to on his page. It is the 'all around' profile I use for the glossy screen. -
JJB what is the easiest way to install this ICC file? I tried couple of methods but didnt notice any difference in colors. I think i missed something.
-
daraj;
The method in the link (right click > install profile) is all I know of. Unfortunatley my Spyder3 program handles all my profiles automatically, I just have a 'popup' list and select the one I want. I know the win7 color profile program sucks but several others have manged to get this profile loaded, maybe someone could clarify alternate methods to load the color profile
You will definately notice a big difference when it loads... -
Thanks JJB!
-
@daraj
right click desktop>screen resolution>Advanced settings>color management tab>color management>Devices tab>Add>Browse>select icc profile>the icc profile should now appear in the color management devices tab list.>highlight the new profile and click set as default profile. you should see it change immediately.
My profile reverts back to the original profile after returning from sleep and when I plug in or unplug my external monitor. If anybody knows a fix for that i would appreciate it. currently I have a shortcut on my desktop for the color management screen so it is pretty simple to switch back. -
Thanks for posting those instructions, what a pain to load compared to my calibration software. Some peopel said they could load it directly from the zip folder by right clicking and selecting 'load profile' ....
Someone posted this freeware link a while back and IIRC people said it worked great for them. It's a profile selecter app, that's all I know and have never tried it, use at your own risk...
http://www.xrite.co.uk/product_overview.aspx?ID=757&Action=support&SoftwareID=539
PS: Xrite is a very reputable color calibration company from the UK -
I'm with daraj, I can't notice a difference when I install/load them following either installation method.
Is there something else where that we have to check to enable custom profiles? Sorry as I am new to these! -
Hi everyone,
I ordered my Envy around the 1st and it should ship tomorrow. I'm sort of running down a list of what I should do to prepare for this thing. I've got a windows 7 DVD burned and was curious if there was anything I should pull down from the factory installed windows before I clean install my copy? I was also wondering if the firmware/HP Driver stuff from the HP website was sufficient or if there were other options I should consider?
I look forward to digging through this thread of oodles of useful information on this gorgeous laptop. Thanks for the help in advance!
JDoobs -
mine was suppose to ship 3 days ago
-
Not sure if this will help, it's a screen shot of where Win7 keeps all the color icc profiles. you should check and see if the new one is listed there. Note: I'm not 100% sure I highlighted the correct file name, if not it will be very similar to that one...
And here is a fresh copy of the icc .zip file in case the old link got corupted or something: View attachment Envy glossy 90% bright profile.zip
Edit: I just downloaded it and checked, in WinZip you can right click on it (before extracting) and it has a bold option to "intsall profile". Did not actually load it though, don't want to have a conflict with my cal. software. -
Yea the right click install does absolutely nothing as far as changing the color. I will try the other method when I get home because im sure there is something we are missing here( when installing using Win7 color management)
-
just cancelled mine has been delayed too long, oh well
-
All I can figure is that some of you may have a 'default' profile loaded somehow and the 'install' option does not override the default that is loaded...
-
@JJB - Would you recommend using that same ICC profile for the matte screen?
-
Worth a try, they are very similar color wise, my concern would be that the matte screen is not as bright as the glossy. You can always revert back to the default if you don't like it.
There is actually a matte screen profile (maybe 2) that I posted about 6 weeks ago when I had both screen types. Not sure which thread it was on, and I have returned the matte screen computer so I don't have the profile anymore. It was a very 'warm' version since it was calibrated for RGB photo editing. -
Hello I'm searching for a replacement of my macbook pro cous:
- apple sucks
- I'm not gay
... and I have some questions (sorry if any of this were answered before I didn't read all of 394 pages.)
1. Does the keyboard have any backlit ?
2. How much thick envy is with the "slim" battery pack ?
3. Does the core i7 version have usb 3 ?
4. Is it rly have 2x 1'8ssd ? I mean come on the vaio Z is 13', it have an optical drive and it fits the two 1'8.
And the envy is 15'6 has no optical drive and it can't fit 2x 2'5 drive ? There is a free sandwich inside or what ?
5. If the answer on q4 is "yes it rly has a 1'8 drives" is any one try to put a 2x 2'5 I mean in some forum I saw a guy who puts a second drive to 13' without putting pf the optical drive xD
6. Is the beat edition black case glossy or mat ? ( u know I hate the fingerprints)
7. Is the combo audio jack able to handle optical output ?
Thx. -
Ok now that I stopped laughing and can obviously deduce that you are indeed a sane person (such an opening confirms it vastly):
1. no
2. 1.9 inches
3. yes (gen 2 version with i7)
4. yes it has 2x 1.8 inch SSDS and the reason it cant fit 2x 2.5s is that the sandwich space is really taken by the MASSIVE cooling system needed in order to run such a powerfull set of components acceptably cool. Besides why do you really want to have dual 2.5s anyways? (usb3 external if you really need more storage, no?)
5. Forget it, there is no space every sq inch is already taken by free sandwiches and MASSIVE cooling components
6. Glossy
7. No optical out on this machine.
8. Yes All these questions have been answered MANY times in this very thread. hope it helps. -
1) No
2) ~1 3/8" but the 'slice' adds 2.7 lbs. spare 6 cell is only .8 lbs
3) Only i7 version has USB 3.0, i5 version has 2.0 and 1 e-SATA
4) yes, 2 x 1.8" drives or 1 x 2.5" max. The lower case is only 5/8" thick O.D.
5) Won't work -- not enough room
6) glossy
7) no optical out, you can get a converter to optical from HDMI thru 3rd party
Here is a picture of the interior to show how much space needs to be dedicated to cooling the high performance GPU and CPU. You can order a matching external DVD or bluray drive when you order if needed.

@Tayeule
LOL, you typed a bit faster than me, but I had to dig around to find the link to my interior picture (hate the search system here).
You must have an extra special slice battery if it adds .9" to the height
How long does that one last? like 16 hours
-
guess i nosed it a bit figured its not QUITE 2 inches.
Btw i was realizing this just this morning that the only use i may have of my slice is in case i lose a pad from under the laptop... the slice has more, yaay! -
Yep, you could even use the ones from the top of the slice and change color for a different look (If your upper feet are grey like mine that is)
I forgive you on the dimensions, after all we American still use that antiquated non-metric measurement system
-
Thank you guys, and hell yeah it's rly a MASSIVE cooling system in especial compared to the one in the macbook pro.
Hmm after all my searchings I think i will go for envy, non beat edition (no fingerprint nightmare). -
Good choice IMO. The design on the top case really grew on me after a while, now I love it and no prints.
I would strongly recommend the glossy HD display over the anti glare version, unlike Apple, it is not the same quality as the glossy; lower brightness, contrast and not as sharp.
Also if you do not require the USB 3.0 and are looking for better battery life the i5 540M is the way to go. -
well i love my limited edition beats but if the new MBP has the NVIDIA Optimus for better battery life I may have to sell my little beauty, especially if the GFX is better than the 5830...
-
For those of you that have a shipping date of 4/12, have you gotten your tracking number?
