    True, but either way I really want to yell at their top brass over the phone. This is just getting pathetic. Also i care about its looks since I paid a bit for it in general and it should be treated at the factory with care, especially when it is the customer's not yours, the technician. I do like the 5830 (it was this that sold me to the Envy) but if I can't get a reliable product and service, I might as well sacrifice a bit and get a Y560, with some peace of mind on my back.

    Sorry to hear that. Removing your plastic protection, only to scratch it? Man, a lot of techs really are mentally challenged and just don't give a crap. I can't image what compels these people... I've seen it before. Techs removing the plastic protection when working on customers new laptops. Does it not even don on them WHY it's there and WHY the customer had left it there?? :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

    Please do. Ask them to question the tech directly as to why he doesn't give a crap .. why remove the plastic? Good luck.

    I got a zagg invisishield for my m15x back in the day. I didn't like it and wished I never installed it. Especially not over the touchpad.

    I was told envy 15 requires a dongle in usb port to operate any bluetooth device. Is this true?

    Few questions:

    1- Did anyone here buy their own RAM and put it into their 2nd Gen Envy?

    I'm ordering my i7 Envy in a week or so and I would rather buy my own extra 4gb RAM for $150 (compared to the extra $300 HP charges for 8gb). So for people who have done this, did you order 1333MHz or 1066? also any particular latency?

    2- I'm going to be an engineering college student in a few months, so should I get the slice battery or an extra 6 cell to carry around? I will have to carry the power adapter with me (classes have plugs on the desks) so whats the best solution taking into account weight/battery life?

    3-Anyone had any experience with HP's House Call service? is it worth the extra $160?

    Thanks for the help :)

    Well unless they got an especially gimped version in india, you already have a bluetooth adapter in your machine.

    Maybe just a problem with your drivers?

    Shouldn't require anything special. Win7 will recognize the RAID array as a disk and you install Windows as you would onto any disk.

    Someone just reported that they bricked their i5 Envy flashing the new BIOS (on the drivers thread).

    Has anyone with an i5 CPU succesfully flashed F .24 A yet??

    It is not the back that is beat up (I got the metal original one), but it is the border bezel that is around the screen and my god Zagg will never make an IS for that part...

    Also, I called the CSR again and the other CSR confirmed my case got hit to the support top brass. I will be expecting a call in the next 48 hours from them. The CSR told me that the top brass is very considerate people and most likely I will get a new bezel replacement or something. I will update you guys once I get the call.

    PS: I really don't blame HP's CS Reps. I more distrust and detest the HP Technicians. I figured that fixing BIOS issues meant no touchy touchy the bezel but nooo... Hell, I am surprised they didn't even dare to rip off the damn Intel Core i5 and Windows 7 Logo stickers I aftermarket placed on the keyboard unit. If they went as far as getting rid of my bezel stickers, they should of tackled that next. SMH.

    In that regards, I am hesitant to upgrade to F. 24 A until I get more success stories. This whole fiasco could of been avoided if I never flashed to F. 1B A :rolleyes:

    They have a new "Intel Turbo Boost Technology Driver" up but I couldn't get it to install on my computer. Something about the wrong bios or wrong minimum settings or such.

    I just turned off the "fans always on" option in bios but am wondering if it's safe. The laptop is noticeably warmer.

    It also seems that there's still a fan always whirring on the right-hand side of keyboard. Is that the GPU? Am I right in assuming that it can't be disabled?

    Maybe I'm expecting the laptop to be more silent than it is...

    The extra memory slots are under the battery with 2 slots for the i7 quad and 1 slot for the core i5. Any speed will be supported but the Core i5 models only really clock to 1066 and all banks will run at the slowest clocked memory installed in the machine. But as mentioned in many a posts the memory speed makes little difference in actual use.

    I bought the extra slice but in retrospect adding a 6 cell instead would have been a better option for the weight concerns. 3rd Party Kensington PSUs are much lighter and cheaper than the HP PSUs and with the right tip does not throttle the CPU.

    If you disabled the fans they will still kick in at a preset temperature and off when it falls below the preset. If the left fan (GPU) never shuts down then you either have something loading it to exceed preset temperature or possibly a faulty temp sensor. My GPU fan starts at around 53C but it idles at around 35C so it almost never turns on unless it sees a significant load. You can get temp readings from the AMD GPU clock tool, GPU-Z, CPUID HWmonitor or Everest. All free apps.

    CAUTION: I installed the new intel "Turbo boost tech" driver from HP and now my Envy seems to lock up (black screen) instead of going into sleep mode. Had to do the old push and hold the power button twice now. This machine has never had this isssue before. Will advise if it continues to be an issue. BTW using the F 1B A BIOS which was working fine before this update. :mad: Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    Edit: closing the lid still allows it to go into sleep mode...just letting it idle to the power setting 'timeout' to sleep seems to lock it up :confused: Will test other power plans and settings tomorrow.

    Thanks to JJB's GPU underclock tip (setting the GPU to 50/100MHz), I went 2hr 50mins hours yesterday and still was reading 29% battery level, with WiFi on and doing my taxes via TurboTax.

    Reducing the clock on the GPU (from the standard "Power Saving" clocks 300/300) saves about 3W according to my testing.

    JJB does your GPU actually idle at 35C? Geez mine never drops below 53C even at low clock speed. Did you replace the thermal compound on it? My GPU fan never turns off, only slows down for a while.

    Yes I use it and it is 1000% better than the useless OSD volume control that came with the Envy. I don't game but this app does not minimize anything I've used it on, including; WMP, Itunes, Youtube, HULU etc... It has some really good looking graphic options but it's tricky to find the control options for them, I think you have to run the app twice (at the same time), make sure to view the readme file it has lots of options like moving where the display pops up and how long it remains etc.

    Here is the 'skin' I'm using: volume.PNG

    Yes, and I love it. I haven't figured out how to keep the HP OSD service from running though (other than uninstalling it) so right now I have both popping up. :p My next clean Windows install will not include the garbage HP OSD, just 3RVX. Great app.

    Yes this is the one I purchased (after owning my Envy for about 4 weeks). But as was previously mentioned, the fine-print does state they reserve the option to make you still mail it in.

    The benefits of in-home repair are well worth the extra cost to me. Not only will it eliminate any downtime (I'm dependent on my computer every day between school and work), but it is also easier to get parts-only repairs that I can do myself because Support is usually happy to send parts when the alternative is having to pay for a technician service-call. That's my experience with Dell in-home warranty anyway. I also feel like if I do have a technician visit, I can be more personable and friendly, and technicians are more likely to be extra careful (prevent scratches!) or attentive when you make a personal connection with them. Again, in my personal experience.

    A previous in-home service technician went, in my opinion, above-and-beyond when replacing my display panel on my m1530, and ended up addressing a few other little complaints I had, like rerouting the wiring under the keyboard, etc. He also saw how important the cleanliness and visual perfection of the system was to me and took extra care to keep from scratching, smudging the screen, etc.

    If I'm going to keep a system for 2+ years, these things are important to me and well worth the extra cost.

    Yes the GPU idles a bit below 35C but that is with the fans 'enabled' in the BIOS, the default setting. It idles at about 50C when the fans are 'disabled', this is with normal default clock settings. Here is a screen of my current temps, after using the computer about 1 hour:

    GPUTEMPS.PNG

    Just to clarify for you, the default clocks actually drop to 99/199 when on battery (at idle) and can go up to 300/300 maximum on battery, you can override this by turning off 'power play' in CCC if you need higher performance on battery.

    Well my Envy is supposed to ship today, but I'm not seeing that happening. I got the i5 430 w/ glossy 1080p. I'm planning on calling up and threatening a refund.

    I'm also kind of tempted to just cancel altogether and buy something else. The thing that kills me is if I cancel and buy another premium laptop it would end up costing me more than if I kept the Envy and even purchased an iPad or 46" 1080p tv. Every time I get tempted to drop $2000 on a laptop I have to remind myself of that.

    Why don't you just cancel? Are you angry that HP didn't ship BEFORE their ESTIMATED ship date? You remember that you see the estimated ship date before ordering the laptop, right?

    In the other HP threads you may read that everybody who was scheduled to ship in the past few days has been postponed at least another week. This estimated ship date is bull crap anyway that they use to give their customers low expectations. It's really a joke that the process for ordering HP's top of the line premium notebook is plagued by delays and other problems when they are directly competing with the macbook pro which is arguably the most pleasant ordering experience one may go through. There is a reason why mac addicts have an aura of entitlement about them, and it's because mac actually makes them feel good.

    Why put out a $450 coupon which you know will make demand go through the roof when you do not have any items in stock to create and ship the product? What are they doing, taking my money, dumping it into the stock market to earn a buck and then purchase the parts and slap them together?

    Don't give the "then buy a macbook pro for $2000" line because I would be going through this exact same situation even if I specced the envy up to $3,000.

    hmm, I'm trying to do some more cleaning up...
    does anyone who did a clean install have the following processes running too? do I need them?
    sstray64.exe ->IDT PC audio
    stacsv64.exe -> see above
    QLBCtrl.exe*32 -> quick launch buttons (I tried killing this and the buttons still work, so what's it for?)
    HPToneCtl.exe -> tone control (killing this doesn't change the way volume control works..)
    hpqWmiEx.exe
    HPHC_Service.exe -> HP health check service (restarts if I kill it, what does it do?)

    on a different topic, has anyone else noticed a bit of paint coming off the front edge where they keep their wrists/palms?

    @joia

    Well first of all your ordering a custom to order computer. Secondly if you read the Envy threads you'll find that more often than not the Envy's have been shipping earlier rather than later from the ESTIMATED shipping date. Third, if they did not email you notifying you of a delay then call and if your 'nice' and not whining like in your posts, you can usually get a decent discount or coupon out of the delay. Complaining here is not going to get you your computer any earlier....

    ??? mine was originally estimated to ship on April 15, and instead it shipped on April 13. maybe your specific specifications are putting a delay on it? or maybe HP just doesn't like you.
